When you have a look at the weights for the national then its going to be near impossible for the connections not to have a go at the national, lets face it this horse has to be rated now around 175 or slightly more after winning the gold cup and yet he gets to race in the national off a ratinf of 161, its surely going to be to much of an invite to refuse as long as the horse is fine after the gold cup of course, the trip suits, we know he stays, we know he has class and now we know ground is not a worry, it could be a certainty unless the fences get in the way, seems strange to say certainty but he really is so well in it begs belief, he wont carry my cash as the one thing that bothers me is his size combined with top weight and these fences but to be fair he looks as good a bet on the book for the national as you could ever see.
As for me well i have two that i have liked for a while and they are killyglen and cappa bleu, the former was going fine last year when coming down five out and will now race against ballybriggs on 15lb better terms, he has been lightly raced, is the right age and the experience last year will do him the wonder of good, the experience of the fences will really help and at around 25-1 with the bookies he must go close, whilst cappa bleu has also been lightly campaigned and as an ex hunter the fences may be something he takes to, his last run was a decent one and again is quite fresh and again from a stable that knows what to do around here he could go well, there my two but we could all look silly if synchronised runs

Alverton had a very low weight for a gold cup winner and did not win, Jonjo won gold cup on that horse.

THE PROSPECT of Synchronised becoming just the second horse in history to add the John Smith's Grand National to the Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup crown he seized just last week remains a distinct possibility, after trainer Jonjo O'Neill said on Tuesday that he saw "no reason" not to run in the Aintree marathon on April 14. Golden Miller, the winner of five consecutive Gold Cups [1932-36], is the only horse to complete the double when winning at Aintree in 1934 and despite connections of recent Gold Cup winners rarely considering a tilt at the National, O'Neill thinks it's the obvious race for the JP McManus-owned nine-year-old. "Synchronised has come out of Cheltenham fine and we'll make a decision nearer the time whether we go or not but there's no reason why not at the moment," said the trainer on Tuesday. He added: "He's in great form and if he comes back to the form he was in at Cheltenham then why wouldn't you go there?" Betfred's 8-1 favourite could be joined in the race by stablemates Sunnyhillboy, also a winner at Cheltenham and a 20-1 shot, and Arbor Supreme (40-1) according to O'Neill. The trainer said: "Sunnyhillboy is also in good form. He stayed well at Cheltenham the other day and I think he'll probably get the trip. He's a contender hopefully. "Things have gone wrong the last couple of times with Arbor Supreme, he's a little bit difficult to get right. He's working well and in good form with himself and if he comes back to his best form then he'd have a chance." The BHA's head of handicapping, Phil Smith, says both Synchronised and Sunnyhillboy would be favourably treated in the National following their Cheltenham wins, although Sunnyhillboy, rather than his more illustrious stablemate, would be the more leniently treated. Smith said: "The slight advantage Synchronised has is that he is now on a mark of 168 after the Gold Cup and he'd be running in this race off a mark of 161 so technically he's 7lb well in. "Sunnyhillboy wasthe widest margin handicap winner at Cheltenham and has gone up 10lb so technically he is well in by that amount and the runner-up in his race, Becauseicouldntsee (20-1), has gone up 5lb so they would have a different rating now if I reframed the race." O'Neill also confirmed that Ryanair Chase runner-up Albertas Run and Get Me Out Of Here, second in the Coral Cup, are likely runners at the three-day meeting that starts on April 12. |

have backed him for the national and also for next years gold cup (i know its a year away but he is almost 3 times the price of sir des champs, 6 points bigger than bobs worth ,and 6 points bigger than long run ) anyway on to the national i have not got too many concerns about his jumping as he seems to scramble over the fences, and these fences may even suit his style of jumping ,my main concern is wheather he has had enough time to get over his gold cup exertions . as you say he will never have a better chance at the weights and we still dont know how much improvement he has in him as he just seems to do enough .

I remember Garrison's race (on at 33/1 FFS), looked all over the winner until Seagram sprouted wings after the last. Mark Pitman was no great shakes as a jockey, his "outside" rides each season were usually in single figures! However I don't recall him doing much wrong here.

GS was not totaly outpointed ...ffs . would have won with an the extra days rest and a jockey on board .
won a better gold cup as well imo . synch would not have won gc with mark pitman on board and GS would have won with ap up . |

Really hope Synch goes for the national as he has absolutely no chance of winning. He's a biblical lay, won the worst Gold Cup I've ever seen and is only a 6lbs well in. He'll be hard at it jumping each of those fences as he's not built to do it. We all remember how "well in" what a friend was last year too.
I'm having dreams about Synch being hammered in the betting and going off 6/1 and me laying him for everything I own. Lay of my lifetime he is. |

Nah Foyles with 11-12 and the effort he has had to jump all those fences. He'll then empty.

If he doesn't fall he's near certain to stay and he will have a quarter of a mile of running after the last. However I agree with others he's likely to get well behind and potentially find trouble. Could be another Amberleigh House though - if he's within 30 l of one of mine at the last I'll be anxious.

Yeah but the key here is the Aintree fences, he gives lots of effort to jump a fence as he's small and not a natural chaser, so juming the national fences will take lots more out of him. Add to it the extra distance, plus top weight and a Gold Cup 4 weeks prior.
He was 3rd under top weight in the midlands national last year over 4m1f, top weight over further than that and with more effort required to jump the fences. It's just a list of negatives against him winning. Add to the fact he went up only 6lbs for his Gold Cup win, he's hardly well in. Sunnyhillboy is equally well in, or better. |

He only went up a pound for his Gold Cup win (167 Lexus, 168 GC).
You make fair points about the weight and bigger fences. Of your points, I think the gap between races is the biggie as he doesn't seem to take racing well. I agree he's not well handicapped, but nor is he badly handicapped (for what that's worth in this unique race). I agree with you he's not a likely winner and I will not be backing him. However he is a proven stayer over close to the distance with a touch of class so I don't see him as hopeless. He's also one of the most interesting runners in terms of seeing what happens (i.e. sport not betting). |

how do you know ? he has won 2 nationals and jumped cheltenham well enough if anything he could be suited by these fences ,not saying he will win but cant see how someone can say wont jump these fences !

Even though the fences have been made easier over the years, they still take some jumping & his technique is simply not got enough. I know a strange statement to make about a horse having just won the Gold Cup, but he will find it all a big struggle next week.

well for a horse who is not suited by any fences he hasnt done too bad ,if his connections say that then they will not let him run if thats the case ,but i detect a bit of confidence behind the horse so i will not be trading out any yet .
as for thinking he may suited by the fences ? my theory is he seems to paddle or scramble over them and i may be wrong he may not take to them at all , but i have backed him at around 20s on here and he is going to be a fair bit shorter(assuming they let him take his chance ,announcement monday or tues ) come race time with the mcoy factor and can trade out for my stake and have a decent free bet .or let the bet run and take my chances ., whatever way he owes me nothing as i had my biggest bet of the season on him in the gold cup . |

 I'd just advise you trade your stake back before the off and let a free bet ride on him. It's win / win situation then. |

CHAMPION jockey Tony McCoy has hinted that connections are leaning towards running Gold Cup winner Synchronised in the John Smith's Grand National at Aintree next Saturday.
