TRAINER Nicky Henderson on Tuesday warned Shakalakaboomboom, bet365's 6-1 favourite for the Peter Marsh Chase at Haydock, was likely to miss Saturday's contest in favour of an option at Doncaster a week later.

The eight-year-old, who runs in the colours of Liam Breslin, entered the John Smith's Grand National reckoning by winning over 3m1½f on good ground at Cheltenham in November, but could find the Haydock conditions against him.

"He's more likely to wait forthe Sky Bet Chase at Doncaster," said Henderson, whose chaser is a general 10-1 chance for that race.

A winner at the Punchestown festival last May, Shakalakaboomboom is a best-priced 25-1 for the Grand National.

Despite his absence, Saturday's race could prove a useful pointer to Aintree's marathon, with 2009 National winner Mon Mome and Rowland Meyrick victor According To Pete looking to strengthen their claims for the famous handicap.

My thoughts on the race:

The Peter Marsh Chase takes place at Haydock on Saturday afternoon, won by Our Vic and Cloudy Lane in recent years it is a decent staying handicap chase in typically a quiet time for the sport. With many of the classier horses being prepped for Cheltenham it is a race which sees the veterans come out and strut their stuff. This year 15 of the 18 entrants are at least 9 years old.

With the ground officially 'Heavy' already and a wet week ahead, the most important factor will be finding a horse that will handle the testing conditions. Mad Max (20/1) heads the weights and has a big question mark next to his name with regards to the ground. Other horses who are seen at there best on quicker ground and yet to prove they can show their best on the forecast ground are Crescent island (20/1), Shakalakaboomboom (13/2) and King Fontaine (16/1).

Another consequence of the heavy ground is that the race is likely to turn in a thorough stamina test so it is probably best to stay clear of horses that are yet to prove themselves at three miles plus: Consigliere (10/1) and Oscargogo (12/1). Also even though he's shown some form around the trip, off a big weight on heavy ground I would be very wary of Sa Suffit (12/1) seeing out the full three miles as well as some of his rivals.

Looking through the rest of the field that I have not mentioned already;

Tamarinbleu - He is usually best fresh and with three quick runs (for him) under his belt it is hard to guess what level of form he can perform. He failed (just) to take a similar heat over course and distance off a 10lb lower mark in November before then finishing a legless second to Master of the Hall when he raced on similar ground to this over 3 miles plus. Back in trip he took a far weaker race last time but off 150 I feel he could be handicapped out of it.

Mon Mome - Is very tempting to be honest but I have two small worries with him. Firstly, he is hard to win with and he has actually lost all 14 handicap starts he has raced off over 140 (runs off 145) over regulation fences. Yes, he won off a higher mark in the Grand National, but that is a unique test. Also it could be that his season is being focused on a repeat bid in the National and he won't be fully wound up here. His record at the track is mixed too with winless form figures of 27465.

Mount Oscar - 13 years old now and has an indifferent record fresh and it is hard to see him winning off a career high mark first time out. This could easily be a warm up for a repeat bid at the Racing Plus Chase which he finished 2nd in last year.

The Giant Bolster - Possibly well handicapped, but never been the biggest fan of the horse. Jumping is still a worry in a big field. Could be a class above if he finally puts it all together, but at 8/1 this stage is worth passing over.

Take The Breeze - Out of form and has had his desired conditions last few starts but has still shown nothing.

According to Pete - Won the Rowland Meyrick last time but with many of the main fancies running below form it is hard to know what the form amounts to. Up to a mark of 142, there seem to be better handicapped horses in the race.

Pearlysteps - Fair chance as was running a big race last time when coming down late on. That was over course and distance on heavy ground, so he will obviously handle conditions. Wouldn't put anyone off backing him but think at this stage there is better value in the field.

Bold Ransom - Won a weak 6 runner race last time and as this is a limited handicap (bottom weight is only 10st 4lb) if Mad Max runs he will be running effectively off a 14lb higher mark than last time. If Tamarinbleu is top weight he will still be running off a 12lb higher mark still and doesn't seem well treated.

Shaking Hands + Rate of Knots - Set to be 12 and 13lbs out of the weights respectively and have also been struggling to win in lower grades. Make little appeal at the prices.

So that leave us with one horse, THE SAWYER, who with the bookies suffering a mild bout of ageism is available at 14/1. I'm sure that if he was a few years younger he would be half the price and vying for favouritism. He has raced enthusiastically so far this season and it seems clear a lot of the ability still remains in tact.

He is now well handicapped off 131 though is set to run effectively off 132 if Mad Max runs. This is the same mark he ran off when an honourable third last time at Cheltenham. Though the trainer of Mad Max has said that horse has a preferred target of the Graduation Chase so the weights look set to go up 2lbs and The Sawyer will be in the weights proper. He has won off 134 and twice off 131. So why should he return to form and be able to win off 131/132 this weekend?

Firstly this is his time of year. Six of his eight wins have come in a period two weeks either side of saturday's date. In that range his figures are 116111164. Secondly, he needs soft or heavy ground. All seven of his wins over obstacles have been on officially soft or heavy ground. If we know look at his form in this period on soft or worse the figures are a remarkable 1161111, with the sixth coming on only his second start over fences.

This season has followed the same routine as any of the previous seasons and he looks ready to strike off this generous mark.

2008/2009 - Three disappointing starts (U54) before New Year meaning his mark dropped from 125 to 119. On the 14th Jan he won off a mark of 119 before following up ten days later at Cheltenham in a Grade 3 off 130.

2009/2010 - Opened up with three mediocre runs (2U9) with mark falling 4lbs. On the 23rd Jan he took a class 2 off 130 before again following up at Cheltenham in a Grade 3 off 134.

2010/2011 - Two runs pre christmas finishing 5th and 13th. He then finished 6th and 4th this side of New Year on Good to Soft shaping as if he was coming into form nicely. Then when met with soft ground again finished second by 1/2l in a listed race at Ascot off 134. That day he was gambled on into 11/2.

2011/2012 - Ran as well as could be expected behind Master Minded over an inadequate 19f on good ground before finishing midfield over national fences. Back on soft ground he posted a good effort to finish only 9l behind The Minack. However, that was only his third start of the year and he usually needs that amount to get going. The form of this race has also worked out well with Neptune Collonges who only just finished ahead of him coming second in a decent handicap since. Once again ran well on New Years Day on ground that would have been too quick for him. Mark now 5lbs lower than beginning of season.

With Nathan Sweeney on (1125 on soft ground together) he will have a featherweight and he also a course winner over hurdles. Trainer, Robert Buckler showed he could do it with a similar veteran with Double Dizzy at Plumpton earlier in the month. He loves a battle and has never won by over 2.5 lengths over fences showing he loves doing it the tough way. At 14/1 he represents a fair bit of value to become the second 12yo in a row to win a race where much of the field have a bit to prove if the conditions are as forecasted. I can easily see him being gambled on the day now he has his conditions and going off half the price. Shakalakaboomboom has just been announced as an unlikely runner and so it seems The Sawyer's price can only go one way.

The slight note of caution is that he is also entered at Wincantion on Saturday. But with the ground much softer here and the race likely to cut up I would imagine this is the preferred option.

Also much like last week the bookies are offering four places as 18 runners are entered at this stage, however, with the ground set to be very testing it is unlikely 16 will go to post and so there will only be three places on the day. In fact the number of runners in the last five renewals has been only been 12, 10, 9, 5 and 5, so there could be some real value around going each way before the final declarations.

1pt E/W The Sawyer 14/1 (General, 1/4 odds top 4)

I used to post on the forum but now put all my stuff up on my blog

Hi Trev, yeah good cheers, you?

Yeah stopped posting as it coincided with exams and flat season which isn't my thing as much. Then when the new jumps season just started up that blog as it's good just to be able to go and look back at all your selections in one place.

Mind firmly getting in a Cheltenham mindset now though! Work are only giving me 2 days off at the moment which is a big difference to being at Uni and taking all 4 off! Think I'm going to be able to twist their arm to three though.

Having been popping in time to time to see how you boys have been doing on the big jumps racing thread!

I have a strong feeling for King Fontaine. Looks on a decent weight and travelled well in the Royland Meyrick last time before fading.

not sure he goes in the heavy meatloaf

Agree on Kings Fontaine. He's got some form over Hurdles on soft, multiple course winner, should stay and back on mark he last won on. I also think they want another crack at the National. Handicapper has dropped him quite significantly, and if he's National bound he's got to win this to have a chance of getting in.

For me The Sawyer is always at his best when dominating at the head of affairs.I cant see him having his own way up with front with According to Pete and Bold Ransom up there.Consigliere was seriously impressive last time out but dosen't seem as good lefthanded.Take the Breeze ran Consigliere to a nose at Chepstow over xmas, over 2.5 miles and staying on strongly and has a 10lb pull with him now.Has form on heavy but has never won over 3m,so stamina to be taken on trust, but worth taking the chance IMO
Report shockster January 20, 2012 9:26 AM GMT
I also like King Fontaine, and at first glance it does appear that Heavy ground would be a negative, however I think it may be more likely that he was too high in the weights rather than the ground.  He has been given a chance by the handicapper by being dropped to his last winning rating and is on a course he obviously acts on. Looks a fair bet to me.

King Fontaine does interest me too as a saver, connections said last time he came back with muck in his throat so could be an obvious explanation for travelling very well before not finding much

Haydock to inspect at 8am on Saturday

By Stuart Riley racingpostcom

HAYDOCK is to hold an inspection at 8am on Saturday morning after officials said the track was hit by more rain than expected.

The going on Friday afternoon was heavy and following 25mm of rain over the last 24 hours clerk of the course Kirkland Tellwright decided it was "prudent to look". Up to 10mm is forecast overnight on Friday.

Those planning on attending the seven race card, due to start at 12.40pm, face an anxious night after Tellwright said on Friday: "It's very wet. We had 14mm yesterday and a further 11mm so far today.

"We are forecast anywhere up to another ten, but what we've had so far has been much worse than expected and if we were to get ten or more, then I suspect things will be very doubtful."
