Yep a fair shout.
Was it Cape Blanco that finished 2nd in the DWC last year ? |
|
By:
Cape Blanco was 4th last year. I think it was a Japanese 1-2, Victoire Pisa and Transcend.
MDK is a very good trainer but think his training of Eagke Mountain was a bit over-rated at the time. The horse had won the Beresford at 2, and the Royal Whip at 3, as well as get placed in two Derbys, and get short-headed out of the Champion Stakes. So to go for that to second in a BC Turf and winning a HK Cup, I'm not sure if "improvement" was the word. More a case of being well-placed. Archipenko improved a small bit. Good Group 2 horse to Group 1 winner in the Far East. King of Rome, Zulu Chief, Macarthur, Kingdom of Naples, Warsaw, Admiralofthefleet, Golden Sword, Frozen Fire, Brave Tin Soldier, Trinity College. A lot of horses there that were worse under De ****. Anyway, don't want to get carried off-topic. Just making the point that De **** dosen't do as well with O'Brien cast-offs as seems. I'm sure he'll have a few ex-South Africans aiming at the DWC too, and I'd prefer them. Bold Silvano if he's back in training will be interesting. |
|
By:
I have to agree with you SoYouThink on your thoughts regarding MDK and ex O'Brien runners and take on board he hasn't been that impressive with some of the runners his drafted in from O'Brien.
The angle I was looking at with Master Of Hounds was his similar pedigree to Archipenko. Archi did win a Group 2 (Derrinstown) as a 3 year old but his form nose dived after that. He was mainly used as cannon fodder for O'Briens's better horses but MDK picked him up and turned him into one of the best international runners during the 2008 season nearly winning the Duty Free (unlucky) and then going onto win the QEII in Hong Kong. MDK has been a bit hit and miss but I just get the feeling Master of Hounds could be another Archipenko, a Kingmambo with some untapped potential. I would put a line through his Dirt runs even though he sort of handled it in the Kentucky Derby. Also his half brother Eishin Apollon won the the big Group 1 mile race in the Autumn at Kyoto beating Sahpresa and Immortal Verse. His mom produces some good ones by the look of it. The race tomorrow night is over 1 mile which will be on the short side for the Master and MDK has pointed out that he will improve a lot for the the run! |
|
By:
why not...anything can win this joke race now. never rated Victoire Pisa...what a joke win.
At least he's got track form, fine run in the K Derby and you could always forgive him the Belmont over that trip and track. The speed bias alone was major killer that day. Duty Free has gone the same way...back at Nad Al Sheba the Duty Free was turning into pound for pound one of the best G1s in the world. |
|
By:
Promising run by MOH. 16/1 with Hills looks fair.
|
|
By:
Promising indeed El Apache, just what I wanted to see from the Master. Onwards and upwards hopefully, liked the way he picked up and ran on in the last two furlongs.
MDK stated before the race Musir will be going back to turf after todays run so I will be surprised if he turns up for the World Cup. Duty Free looks a better option for that one. Gooner, the whole event has become a joke over the last few years, I feel this is mainly down to the jockeys being idiotic with there overblown slow, quick, slow tactics. The money on offer must have some strange effect on them. A lot of the races around the world are becoming farces due to these plonkers. You could say the DWC is just a Winter Derby with a laser light show but there is some good value to be had with these big international races and I like that. |
|
By:
yep looks good. the tapeta has neutralised the impact of the Americans...that said Animal Kingdom already has a pretty devastating win in the books on a synthetic surface.
btw I'm in agreement with Chapman that the design of the track is wrong. Nads you had a massive straight to run into...here you turn for home and your bang on the line. |
|
By:
Good to see Musir winning again today, showed a good turn of foot off a slow pace and cruised to comfortable 1 length win. Whether he is good enough to win a Duty Free is debatable but he is definitely going in the right direction!
Master Of Hounds will hopefully run in a couple of weeks time with the Maktoum Challenge Rd2 (Feb 9th) being his next target. I've backed him at 16-1 EW for the World Cup and will probably go in again if he puts up a good show like his stablemate did today. |
|

agree EG, I preferred Nad Al Sheeba, this place favours handy horses too much

Looking forward to a good run tomorrow. Last chance to take 16/1. |

Mike De ****, trainer of Master Of Hounds
"This has always been the plan for Master of Hounds as we take the next step to World Cup night and he ran a great race in the first round but this looks a proper Group 2 race and he will need to be near his best. The end of March is still a long way away and there is definitely something left to work on but we are very happy with him and the step up in trip is very much in his favour". MOH looks ready for tomorrow and has got a nice looking draw in 5. The bookies make him 5/2 favourite which is a bit skinny for me to have a bet but can't wait to see how he gets on! Cirrus Des Aigles looks interesting as well, he's having a prep on the new Chantilly all weather track March 3. |
|
By:
Very disappointing run from MOH this evening, Soumillon didn't give the horse the best of rides but he had every opportunity to go past Mendip and Haatheq when a gap opened but didn't produce a change of gear to go through with it. He then got boxed in and had know where to go and kept on one pace when pulled off the rail.
MDK might have undercooked him tonight but he should be beating this bunch if considered a genuine World Cup horse. Back to the drawing board I think! |
|
By:
funny race, i mean haatheq 2nd?
![]() think you still have a live one when he goes up in trip. gl with it! |
|
By:
It was funny old race Bus but MOH hasn't filled me with much confidence after that. Maybe Super Saturday (3 March) will tell us more about the World Cup pecking order!
|
|
By:
aye!
i mean mendip is a good horse, i had question marks about him over this trip but he was good enough to win this race but the 2nd shouldnt be there, a decent marker horse but there are far better horses in behind. havent seen time but i think it was fast enough. pity as i wouldve attributed a lack of early pace and a sprint for home as the reason for the result. perhaps MOH was a tad disappoinging but he is a better horse than this race shows and will undoubtedly improve for a step up. he goes well on the surface too so u have a fair bit going for u in that respect. i also like horses that have been running at the carnival in the months previous, that tend to go off bigger price that the twice overs etc that only show up for the race itself. gl |
|
By:
I like your positive thinking Bus, on his website MDK said MOH was still not 100% race fit so maybe it wasn't as bad as I first thought. I would prefer to see Kevin Shea back on board as well next time.
Made a bit of a mistake with the Super Saturday date, it's on 10 March not 3 March as I posted earlier! |
|
By:
yes i too like like kevin shea. hes always been reliable around dubai (nad al sheba inc.)
good ol jj the jet plane turning for home at nad al sheba was a sight to behold. yeah id defo keep the faith with MOH. |
|
By:
"With a clear passage he would have been closer and he will have come on a lot for that, while Master Of Hounds is also going to be better stepped up to the World Cup trip. He too will improve from tonight."- RP

Trainer went very close with Lizards Desire a couple of years ago. Seems to be following a similar path with MOH. Hopefully he will primed to peak when it matters.

I was having a look on the MDK Racing website and found his comments regarding the runners from last Thursday. It doesn't look good for Master of Hounds World Cup bid. MDK is switching him to the turf track in two weeks time, thinks he will be better on turf!
“Master Of Hounds had every chance,†said Mike bluntly before conceding: “He’s a delicate horse, so I haven’t been hard on him in training and I don’t think he’s at peak fitness yet. But we’re getting there.†He added that Master Of Hounds would be switched to the turf track for a race in a fortnight. “I have a feeling he’ll be better on the turf.†Bold Silvano will be his Maktoum Challenge (Round 3) and World Cup horse by the sound of it. |
|
By:
Just had a look on the Racing Post website and it says MOH is running this Thursday now, it's all going a little bit pair shaped! I'm not sure a delicate horse would want such a quick turnaround.
"MASTER OF HOUNDS could make a quick return to action at Meydan on Thursday with trainer Mike de **** saying he was nearly certain to run in the Al Fahidi Fort." |

Hi all,
Hope all is well with you. Just wanted to ask you seasoned tipsters if you know how I can bet on the weekly racing in Dubai from Ireland? Thanks mates Mick in Sligo |
|
By:
Hi sligo,
You can bet on all the weekly racing from Dubai. The best advice I can give you is to visit oddschecker.com on the day of racing, Meyden is always listed. Good luck with your bets. |
|
By:
That was more like today especially given Betfair SP of 26.
Hope trainer now goes for World Cup as several of his other contenders blew out today. |
|
By:
That was a superb ride from Kevin Shea today. Bold Silvano's bubble was well and truly burst so MDK hasn't got much ammo left for the big one. MOH has got to run with his style of racing and King Kevin must be the jock onboard.
Congratulations Apache if you got the 26 on Betfair, well deserved win. I'm a bit gutted I didn't back him, the draw put me off big time and I wasn't expecting that move after the gates opened. ![]() |

Some comments regarding MOH from the MDK racing website.
Mike described the evergreen Shea’s ride as a “clever†one. ‘The Pastor’ had judged the pace to perfection. He had Master Of Hounds well balanced, got him quickly straightened after the turn and galloping along merrily in his hands. The others were flat footed after the initial crawl and chased hard, but to no avail. Shea got low down and working on Master Of Hounds, driving him hard over the last 150m and they hit the line for what must have been one of the veteran rider’s most satisfying career wins. “Master Of Hounds will qualify for the Dubai Duty Free and the race will suit him, but I’m not going to commit at this point. We may still decide to switch him to the Dubai World Cup, we’ll keep our options open.†|

Is So You Think still an intended runner in the DWC?

Dubai Race Night Projected 2012 Dubai World Cup Field
No Master Of Hounds in their projected list, we will have to wait and see what MDK does. Dubai Race Night analysis below. After the final main local prep for the 2012 Dubai World Cup, we provide our projected field for the $10 million race. #1 – CIRRUS DES AIGLES Trainer: Corine Barande-Barbe Estimated UAE Rating: 126 Initially after a second in a Chantilly all-weather prep, it was announced that he would aim for one of the $5 million turf races. But a few days later, his trainer suggested he was still possible for the Dubai World Cup. The possibility keeps him on top here, even if tenuous. #2 – SO YOU THINK Trainer: Aidan O’Brien Estimated UAE Rating: 125 All those Aussie successes followed by the Coral Eclipse (G1) and Irish Champion Stakes (G1), then beaten second by Cirrus Des Aigles at Ascot, and ran a sneaky good sixth in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1). Like some others, if he wants to, a spot in the gate is his, and we think that is very likely, especially after the results from Super Saturday. #3 – GAME ON DUDE Trainer: Bob Baffert Estimated UAE Rating: 122 Second in the 2011 Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1), he won last year’s Santa Anita Handicap (G1) and avoided that race season, wisely, to come to Dubai. He’s a gelding, races from the front, and is just tough to get past. That makes him incredibly dangerous, especially considering how the Tapeta played on Super Saturday. #4 – CAPPONI Trainer: Mahmood Al Zarooni UAE Rating: 122 Got a massive ratings bump after winning Super Saturday’s Maktoum Challenge – R3 (G1), but left many thinking they still have chances on the big night. The winner of that last race hasn’t pulled the Dubai World Cup double since Electrocutionist, and we would be shocked if this guy did it. #5 – MONTEROSSO Trainer: Mahmood Al Zarooni UAE Rating: 121 Stayed-on well in his comeback run in the Maktoum Challenge – R3 (G1) and is likely to have gotten enough out of that effort to move forward in the big race. He was third in last year’s edition. #6 – TRANSCEND Trainer: Takayuki Yasuda Estimated UAE Rating: 120 Still declared on track for this race as of ten days ago, which came into question after his struggle in the February Stakes (G1). There was plenty of reason to think that performance wasn’t fully telling of his current condition, and last year’s Dubai World Cup second is still a threat, and will go forward. Watch his run in last year’s Dubai World Cup below. #7 – PLANTEUR Trainer: Marco Botti Estimated UAE Rating: 119 His 2011 Prix Ganay (G1) win over Sarafina, Cirrus Des Aigles, and Cape Blanco sticks out on paper, and makes him a legitimate threat if ready. This guy is now with Marco Botti and owned locally in the UAE, but would go direct to the World Cup, having not run on Super Saturday. Another who gets in if accepting the invitation, even though he tailed off at the end of 2011, with a fifth in the Prix Jacques le Marois (G2) and trailing home last in the Prix du Moulin de Longchamp (G1) on very soft going. #8 – ROYAL DELTA Trainer: Bill Mott Estimated UAE Rating: 119 Winner of the 2011 Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic (G1), she was purchased for $8.5 million two days after that effort, and immediately pointed here. She prepped at Gulfstream Park on dirt over a trip much short of her best, finishing second beaten about seven lengths. In our opinion, that race was fine enough to think she is on point for the trip to Dubai, and don’t forget she holds a conditions win on all-weather from April 2011 – so Tapeta should be no problem A win would make her the first filly to land a Dubai World Cup. WATCH Royal Delta’s prep race at Gulfstream Park. #9 – GREEN DESTINY Trainer: Herman Brown UAE Rating: 119 Was distanced in the Maktoum Challenge – R3 when he may have flipped his palate, although the post-race vetting showed nothing. They could certainly regroup and get him back for the race, but is a question. Twice a Group 3 winner in England last season, he was a good sixth behind Cirrus Des Aigles in the Champion Stakes, and has been pointed here for some time by his new connections. #10 – BOLD SILVANO Trainer: Mike deKock UAE Rating: 118 The winner of the 2010 Vodacom Durban July (G1), he is really a fragile type, winning the Maktoum Challenge – R2 (G3) at Meydan last season before a nagging issue kept him from the 2011 Dubai World Cup. He was fifth in February’s Firebreak Stakes (G3) over 1,600 when making his first appearance from that injury, and then a listless 12th in the Maktoum Challenge – R3 (G1), when it was possible his tongue flipped over the bit. He is, absolutely, the most tenuous place-holder on this list. #11 – SILVER POND Trainer: Doug Watson UAE Rating: 117 A solid second, staying-on from Super Saturday, he clearly got over the Tapeta and still recorded one of the fastest final sectional times of the race. That had to be encouraging considering he was probably short of peak fitness for a barn that continues to put out competitive runners. He’ll have a spot if the team wants it. #12 – SMART FALCON Trainer: Ken Kozaki Estimated UAE Rating: 117 19 wins from 26 starts, with all of those victories coming on various dirt/all-weather surfaces, and mostly in the top echelon of Japan’s lower levels of racing, he has defeated some quality opponents, including Transcend and Testa Matta in the Tokyo Daishoten (G1), over 1,600 metres. He’s almost a certainty to go in the Dubai World Cup. #13- FLY DOWN Trainer: Badr Al Subaie UAE Rating: 117 With a troubled trip in the 2011 Dubai World Cup, he went back to Saudi Arabia and performed well, winning the Crown Prince Cup (G2) and then running a great second in the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Cup (G1) after possibly being pushed to go for home too soon. He confirmed he can get over the Tapeta, getting the fastest final 400 metres in his Super Saturday prep, encouraging enough to move forward. #14 – PRINCE BISHOP Trainer: Saeed bin Suroor UAE Rating: 117 He has been a new horse since being gelded, and ran tenth in this race last year. A strong listed win at Kempton was backed with a dazzling run in a Meydan handicap, which was franked. The son of Dubawi didn’t follow-through in the Maktoum Challenge – R2 (G2), but after starting very slow in the Maktoum Challenge – R3, he held on for a good third, and showed he can be competitive against top quality. |

unconformed report that joesph takes the ride. i wasnt afraid of SYT until now as it appears he is a def runner and with JOB onboard he will be to the front with the pace and could be in with a great chance from the front and as the last few weeks in meydan has shown horse who take possitions from the front win,
i have taken an opinion with masterofhounds and was hoping he'd be ridden is similar fashion to the jabba hatta win, his advange over most of the field is that he is very fit, not sure how many more can vouch for that. can only see super soumi takingthe ride which is a pity as shea has ridden him most and did well with him evertime imo |
|
By:
It makes sense Aidan O'Brien sticking Joseph onboard SYT as I'm sure he will be riding St Nicholas Abbey in the Sheema Classic as well. Both horses have got to have good chances, the turf track will suit SNA and Treasure Beach could be in there to set the pace for him. Looks a race O'Brien can win, the other runners in the Sheema Classic don't look that great.
I like Soumillon as a jockey but he doesn't seem to get on with MOH as much as Kevin Shea! I think it could be a big mistake taking the ride off King Kev for the big one and hope MDK sticks with him. |
|
By:
Cheers for your positive comments Bus, MOH just needs to go and win it now!
![]() |
|
By:
i do feel SNA may need the run. he has never really been great 1st time out, TB could have an equal chance irrilivant of jockey bookings,
i like soumi think he is a great jock but mom doesnt need a fancy ride that soumi only love to do, a simple from the front ride will win the race. alot of how ballydoyle form will be revealed on sunday |
|
By:
I really like SYT at 3s for this. Surely he's head and shoulders above these, despite not quite being the monster that we were told he is. The one worry is that he won't be 100% fit, but hopefully AOB won't make that mistake again.
Does anyone know much about Smart Falcon. It seems that he's just been winning weak races on dirt in Japan, but I could be wrong. Is he as good as those who came over last year? |
|
By:
hes a nice horse but hes unproven on tapeta for a start and is definitely beateble in this race, draw will play a big part too!
i tend to fancy horses that have been running at the carnival as opposed to the 'big guns' that usually line up for the WC only! they tend to be bigger prices than they perhaps should also! |
|
By:
O'Brien really taking aim at this meeting after a few years stand-off between Coolmore / Godolphin.
Big question is if he'll have them all fit enough. Cape Blanco and Master of Hounds both ran well last year to suggest he will. So You Think is a big price at 3s and seems to be coming into this race with little fuss being made about him (on this forum). The Duty Free looks a strong renewal with the HK runners all engaged. Looks as good a WC night as there's been in a good while. |
