This horse is an out and out stayer. Why King won't run him over 3 miles is beyond me.

With the exception of Long Run it could be a very weak Gold Cup this year.

Weak race or not, it's not going to be won by a horse rated in the high 150s.

You seem to have an unhealthy obsession with this horse imo.

At least King has entered Medermit in the Gold Cup. He should run Medermit in the old Pillar Chase but no doubt he will run him at Ascot over 2 1/2 miles and then the Ryanair where it will probably stay on to finish 3rd or 4th.

The horse is a stayer.

Quote from alan king in wednesdays rp weekender re Medermit:
"He stayed  on so well over 2m 5f last time out that I am seriously considering running him in the Betfair Denman
Chase(formerly the AON) at Newbury next month which is over 3m"

One of your better shouts imo, Meaty.  Medermit is well worth a try over further and no-one could say this is a deep GC field.

Thanks for the info tinkler.

King will probably wait for Aintree though when the horse is knackered after running at Ascot and Cheltenham!

about 3 days before the race ,it will dawn on him, ryanair is too hot this year, plus its out paced in all its 20f or less races,

skys the limit is related to it an out and out stayer.

Running in the AON chase next Saturday I belive. So if it wins that presumably it will go for gold!

That is very interesting because I make the Spinal Research race that he was second in to be very very strong form indeed - if as you predict he is really a stayer then the fact that he was fast enough to reach the frame in that really fast race would stand him in good stead...

I had him down to be backed wherever he runs in his next 3 or 4 starts and have backed him for the Ryan Air already so will now keep an eye out

cheers for the thread, highly useful

Medermit does stay quite well doesn’t he, especially when you look at his breeding. The Racing Post sire index of both his sire and dam sire do not smack of staying quality.

The horse is only 8 so there’s time yet if he wants a crack at the Gold Cup. I do wonder at times what some of the better trainers think. If King wants to find out whether Medermit will stay significantly further than 2m 5f the time to find that out is after Cheltenham, and not before it.

The Betfair Bowl at Aintree is the way to find out. At Aintree the horse would put in a good display if there was still plenty in the locker……a tough Ryanair will flush out whether the horse has been pushed close to the limit.

Running the horse at 3m before Cheltenham may take the edge off him, and render him ineffective in both the Ryanair, and the GC should King elect that route….which from what he’s been saying is not the case.

King should be happy with what he got here and stick with the Ryanair. The Game Spirit would be a more appropriate prep for the horse too.

Rick, I'd keep backing him for the Ryanair. The 16's looks big: as you say the horse has already put in a performance this winter that would have put it in the mix of last years race.
