I can't understand why this top hurdler is novice chasing when there's Grade 1's to be won. He'd probably have been favourite to defend his Fighting Fifth crown on his good 2nd to Hurricane Fly in the Champion Hurdle. He gave that horse his toughest test last year and would've surely been a major player in next year's renewal.
It may be a case of tackling fences being in the McCain blood but most top hurdlers stick to hurdling.
For a kick off he needs further to been seen at his best and he won't have got any faster than he was last season. He'd have to improve 5 to 7lbs to be sure of beating Hurricane Fly and there's no guarantee he'd beat Binocular if Nicky Henderson is right and he's back to his best.
Anything Peddlars Cross was going to do over hurdles was a bonus. Even in his early days they panned to miss the Supreme and let him develop as chasing was always going to be his game.
As it turned out he filled out faster than thought, won at Cheltenham and as we know finished 2nd in the Champion Hurdle.
The one thing no one cane be sure of is how good a race the Champion Hurdle really was? Binocular abscent, Cue Card overrated, Menorah ran below par leaving Oscar Whisky a 2m4f horse to take 3rd.
His chances of beating Hurricane Fly were very slim, if he'd have run in the Fighting Fifth and got beat then what? Not a lot for him to look forward to and abit late to switch to fences.
He wasn't goof enough to win the Champion Hurdle simple as. This season with Grandouet, Spirit Son and Zakander all likely to improve to CH standards I say it was only commong sense they sent the horse chasing where he belongs.

no chance of reverting. done the right thing, had a year at the top over hurdles and proved himself. no need to give him another tough season in that sphere, they've always said he'd be a beast of a chaser.

I think you can make a case for this horse doing either hurdles or fences tbh. Either way you look at it, I dont think it matters, provided he competes in a wins top races.
But I dont know what it is, I just cant put my finger on it, but I couldn't have him for the Arkle at the moment, certainly not at 4/1.

Imo Peddlers cross is the best 2m hurdler there has been in the UK for at least 10 years and was a bit unlucky to run into HF who may have given the Mighty Istabraq a race. If he'd been kept to 2m hurdles this year there is no UK hurdler that is anywhere near him. The problem is come the CH it's unlikely he'd be able to beat HF. But if HF doesn't make it he would have had the CH at his mercy. Even if goes on to win the Arkle and Champion Chase surely the Champion Hurdle has more prestige . Ironic that his inferior stablemate should win the Fighting Fifth. Good luck to the horse this year but for me it's disappointing he's not hurdling.
