Hello everyone,
Ive been going through this Caulfield Cup within the past few days and i cant help being drawn to Brian Ellison's Saptapadi, its been given a great draw (Stall 6), and its got its conditions for the first time in ages.
Well i seriously cant have the favourite because of its overall profile of never winning at 1m4f...and in my opinion it actually has 11lb to find with Saptapadi on its runs last year in England.
What i do find interesting is that Ellison is running the horse again so quickly after last weekend's run in the Herbert Power Stakes (G2), In my opinion it was never put in the race after how it was drawn.
At 30/1 on betfair i think it represents some value with regards to its class.
It will be a fairy tale story if Ellison and the Jockey was to win either this Caulfield Cup or go on to do well in the Melbourne Cup, the jock "Mark Zahra" was unseated on Carte Diamond whilst having an excersise 6 years ago and was out of the game for 9 months whilst Bay Story for Brian Ellisons broke down in one of the races on the melbournce cup in 2007, I mean how unlucky is Brian Ellison in the top races ?? he must be looking at the sky sometimes wondering if someone is having a joke...having backed latalomne myself at 40/1 both years then falling 2 years on the trot at the same fence in the queen mother champion chase whilst looking a certainty to be placed at least, then having this heartbreak of the Aussie visits.
Saptapadi definitly has a bit of class when it comes into these type of hcaps and the price is a bit silly in comparisim to the Fav

probably is worth a few quid at the prices. He didn;t have the best of draws last time out and it was the same in the Ebor. Ellison even gave this horse an entry in the Champion Stakes.

Ellison has actually said that Saptapadi has a lot of speed which is whats needed around the turns at caulfield. Thats Ellison himself quoted on a few Aussie websites in the last 48hrs, 1m4f i think is its trip , think we have all been thinking he needs a longer trip...but he has only ever won over this trip. |

I got on last week at 100/1. Big run last week. Better than the figure '8' next to its name suggests. Was three and four wide the whole way around Caulfield which you just cant do. I thought it was a **** ride by McEvoy and thank god he wont be riding tomorrow. Well drawn and definite each way chance. Has been backed in at long odds here in Aust. Its one of the weakest Caulfield Cup fields I have ever seen.

Brian Ellison's luck in Australia might finally be turning. There was no happier man at Wednesday's BMW Caulfield Cup barrier draw than the Englishman, who saw Saptapadi draw an ideal barrier for Saturday's $2.5 million event at Caulfield. The six-year-old son of Indian Ridge, who ran a fine eighth in last Saturday's Herbert Power Stakes after being trapped wide, drew barrier six but will come into five if the emergencies don't gain a start. “It's brilliant,” Ellison said. “He's drawn 16 of 16 here last Saturday and the run before that (when fifth in the Ebor Handicap) he'd drawn 22 of 22. It's brilliant drawing five. “He's a big price. If this was England he'd be second or third favourite, but he's 50-1. He's a massive chance.” The draw should ensure Saptapadi gets a cosier run than last Saturday, when he sat three-wide without cover for much of the 2400 metres but still finished just 3-3/4 lengths from winner Shewan. Ellison said Saptapadi got further back than he would have liked, but put that down to the barrier and said Mark Zahra, who replaces Kerrin McEvoy aboard Saptapadi this week, delivered a glowing report after trackwork earlier this week. “I just said to Kerrin, ‘just get him back from that draw' and he probably just went a bit too far back,” Ellison said of last week's run. “We were last passing the stands and then we were three-wide all the way,” Ellison said after the draw. “He's thrived since. Mark Zahra rode him this morning and he just breezed over 800 and quickened over the last 400 and he felt great. I'm really happy with him.” Saptapadi, whose only win in 13 starts came via a 2400m Doncaster maiden, had his price cut to $26 with TAB Sportsbet following his favourable draw. He was one of several internationals who drew well. Fellow English raider Manighar drew one spot inside Saptapadi, German import Lucas Cranach – now in the care of Anthony Freedman – drew gate three and Hong Kong raider Mighty High drew the inside. The exception was Manighar's Luca Cumani-trained stablemate Drunken Sailor, who was allocated barrier 18, but will come into 14 if the emergencies don't run. Caulfield Cup victory would be particularly sweet for Ellison, whose previous trips to Melbourne have ended in disappointment. In 2005 he had Carte Diamond injury himself in a trackwork accident, ultimately resulting in him being ruled out of the Melbourne Cup by stewards, while the following year Bay Story had to be put down after falling in the Lavazza Long Black on Melbourne Cup Day. |

Bit of a novice on Aussie racing , solely going on a hunch that Ellison has targeted this for Saptapadi for some time. just hope the jock doesnt ruin its chances, lot of pressure for him given his history with the stable. |

Not sure they went quick enough for him ? Jockey seemed to drop the horse back through the pack and was 5 from last at one stage despite breaking well and getting a godd position. They really bunched up on the bend and then sprinted, Saptapadi had to go wide again but doesn't have the speed for those tactics.

you wouldnt pay him for that would you. Nevermind, only $20,000 to enter. Mihgt have snuck 6-8th with a decent ride and at least it pays for his trip overthere. WAC of a ride

im very disapointed , if it turns out that the Caulfield Cup was always the target for Saptapadi then Ellison should have a word with himself.
Suppose i cant quite judge him just yet as we dont know if its going to run in the melbourne cup.  |

Ellison felt Saptapadi suffered from tracking the disappointing December Draw. He said: "It was a bad ride. He (Mark Zahra) had a good position and then lost it. "He let the favourite in on his outside and thought that was the one he had to beat, but that ran badly and we got shuffled back with him. "He wants to be ridden handy really as all he does is travel and he doesn't have that turn of foot. "Obviously we'd like to run him in the Melbourne Cup if he gets in but if he doesn't, he'll probably run in the Lexus Stakes the Saturday before." |

Cant argue with that statement, however, Ellison should know better.
why keep carrying on with a jock thats done nothing but brought you bad luck in Australia in the last 6 years. Can it win the Melbourne?? wtf is Ellison doing ffs? Get a better jocky Ellison!!!! |
