What type of race do you think this horse will go for this year?

I would like to see it try 3 miles. King picked the Arkle for the horse which was possibly a bit on the sharp side.

Any thoughts?

In the back of my mind I think this could be a Gold Cup horse?
Report buddeliea October 6, 2011 7:15 PM BST
Dont jump well enough to win a race against the best around.
Will probably be campaigned with Ryanair in mind or possibly skip the festival for Aintree.Personally i would put him back over hurdles.
Absolutely no chance of beibg a gold Cup horse imo.

Very very disappointing for me at great cost, not jump well enough as stated above to be top class, trip who knows appears to come on and off bridle too often, step up in trip maybe answer, but wont be backing him again.

Running in the Haldon Gold Cup in a couple of weeks. If it wins will it run in King George?
Report revedesivola October 19, 2011 10:15 PM BST
captain chris and ghizao go for haldon, i doubt medermit will win... or come close!

Medermit did beat Capatin Chris in a grade 1 last season if my memory serves me right?
Report Mr Eboue October 20, 2011 8:09 PM BST
Yep over 2m4f at Sandown.

he was very impressive in that sandown race...his jumping especially....a false dawn though.
Report eric_morris October 21, 2011 7:59 AM BST
Really strong on him not being an Arkle horse re trip/jumping at 2m championship pace but connections were over-ambitious re target as a novice. He could be a Gold Cup horse as he cruises well and does seem to have unexposed stamina. The horse who couldnt jump left handed and needed further than the Arkle trip, Captain Chris, will be beating him at up to 2m 4f with a positive ride and a clear view of fences which is the key to his jumping not left/right handed.

There is an irony with Captain Chris re his style and trip compared to Medermit where the majority could be wrong.
Report HambrookHead October 21, 2011 9:25 AM BST
Medermit is just short of being top class in my opinion. I think he will find 1 or 2 too good for him in Grade 1's this season. He is also too high in the handicap to win races in that sphere.

If I was Alan King I would get him tuned up for the early season races when the likes of Captain Chris, Wishfull Thinking, Master Minded are still coming to the boil for later season targets.
Report Meat Loaf October 21, 2011 2:12 PM BST
I'm confused why a lot of people ahve written this horse off. Only average race he ran last season was in the Arkle (other than the race it refused to jump!). Not many novices run well at Aintree after Cheltenham.

Mark my words step this horse up to 3m and it will be top class.

Captain Chris vs Medermit (round 3) at Exeter on Tuesday

I am amazed this horse is still on peoples radar.

He ,might mop up egg and spoon chases but come the big day he will wilt.

Beat Captain Chris as stated but not close to him in a "proper" race
Report eric_morris October 29, 2011 6:21 PM BST
3miles .... lets check my irony theory re trip with Captain Chris who has to have 'a lot of use' made of him with a positive ride to jump well. 'A lot of use' may not be best over a staying trip against cruisers waiting for a late kick. Medermit is no Best Mate but style-wise he should put it up to Chris at the trip ... and no spring ground for Chris ... interesting.

Well after todays display i am going to alter my view somewhat.
I still dont think he will be a GC horse, and i still think he will be campaigned with the Ryanair in mind, but where i have changed my view is in his jumping.I thought he jumped well today and it appears i have done the horse a disservice.
Big player over 2m and half this season.

Decent first run from Medermit. Needs to be stepped up to 3miles to see its fulfil its full potential in my opinion.
Report seary November 1, 2011 9:44 PM GMT
I recall Alan King saying in interview last season, that he believed medermit would always turn into a true staying chaser. Looks like the way forward for him.
Report Meat Loaf November 9, 2011 5:51 PM GMT
Entered in the King George.

Glad to see King has seen sense and now aiming it at the Gold Cup
Report everard March 3, 2012 7:30 PM GMT
Its still more likley to go the Ryanair i beleave althought they are considering the Gold Cup they would be mad to go for the possibility of filling 5th or 6th in the Gold cup when the Ryanair is there for the taking this year
Report judorick March 4, 2012 12:26 PM GMT
not according to the markets, drifted for the Ryan Air and shortened for the Gold Cup
