I saw the Aiden trained Athens at York.
To quote soldierofortune, Athens is a superbly bred quite sizeable best with a beautiful form and apparently lovely temperament. He finished a highly promising 4th at York and looked a certain future winner.
I was looking to get on at 7/4 on Saturday;however he was far too short a price.
Nevertheless I expected him to win or go close.
I was a bit surprised when I found out he had not just lost, but been slaughtered 5 lengths and became interested in what on earth might have done this to him.
The horse in question is Akeed Mofeed, a stoutly bred son of Dubawi. of anything I have seen so far this season, he looks the most obvious Derby candidate. Okay its only a maiden, but it was pretty hot looking maiden and with him looking green still, and looking to have nice conformation for epsom, I reckon he could be a decent Derby candidate for those enjoying an ante post bet.
I reckon he is too stoutly bred for the 2ooo Guineas, but winning like that on good ground over 7 furlongs make me think he could be quick enough, if good enough of course, for the Derby.
Of course the bookies are only offering a derisory 25/1. This is very mean for a horse managing a RPR of 96 second time out & I am looking for a bit more than that on here.
if anyone thinks he is too short at 42, kindly oblige me by laying my small bet.

Saw that race, impressive, would not want to lay@40/1 . Can't really blame the bookies in this case as the 96 figure has a big margin for error with these type of horses, and that is erring on the side of caution as a lot more likely to be rated 110+ in 2 months time than low 90s.

Hugely impressed with him on Saturday.
I was talking with my friend today and we both agreed he was the most likely Derby winner we have seen this season. Can't wait for the Beresford when he comes up against Camelot who also impressed me. Intriguing that Oxx has nominated the Beresford for his next outing. Oxx has run only 7 horses in the Beresford, and 3 have won; Alamshar (won Irish Derby), Azamour (multiple group 1 winner) and Sea The Stars (stable mate in 2nd). Goes without saying he must rate him highly. |

Far from laying the brute the lunatics on here want to back it at crazy arbing prices. Akeed Mofeed is available widely at 25's and you could this morning still get 33's with PaddyP0wers. I am not sure 33's is great value, but you never get much better for a decent maiden winner. At least the next race will tell us more as he's taking the Sea The Stars route in the Beresford stakes. |

invariably have to do a check on the Irish race times, Sankara, and in this case the 2yo fillies maiden was slower than reported, whilst I made the maiden won by Akeed a shade quicker.
I thought that Ireland had introduced electronic timing, but clearly not at some of the minor tracks, and even at the Grade 1 tracks, times are sometimes doubtful, clearly hand timed. A 6f handicap at the Curragh was time at 72.00 secs the other week, but manual check showed time was approx 74.7 - only a difference of around 13-14 lengths..... |

Looked good but worried about the name. Horses with names like that don't win Derbies imo. I'm serious btw.

I know exactly what you mean and I had even thought of that before I took Paddy's 33's. However its time a horrid name won the Derby and we may be due a few in a row, to even up the trend. Whats the odds a horse called Akeed Mofeed wins next year, followed by Vomit, and Chunderpuss, Warmsick and Soiledpants in the following 4 years? |

I remember Phil Bull who submitted to Wetherby's a list of names for horses. They were all named after famous ancient Greeks. He got Themistocles, Sophocles, Theocrates and Thucydides all through, just in the nick of time Wetherby's clocked the trouble with Testicles, apparently only just in time as it was hidden in Bull's long list.

can only estimate from the video, but 87.9 for the fillies and 87.4 for the colts

depends if you rate the fillies maiden, Sankara? The maidens compared favourably with Below Zero's later handicap win and personally had Akeed Mofeed running to 100+, certainly worthy of going into Group class at 2.

That was impressive. Sea The Stars got stuffed in a maiden on his debut . Lets just hope he shows the same dramatic improvement. |

His price does not equate to his form its true. He has to improve quite a bit to win convincingly.

That looked like a hard race to me, they both looked to be labouring a little at the end. The head wind and heavy going could have left it's mark. I hope they put him away now until next season.

I was a bit disappointed in Akeed Mofeed.
Of course it was a huge step up on his maiden win and the form is fairly sound, but he got beaten by the better horse on the ground on the day and DL is a group 2 performer not group 1. However the consensus seemed to be that he would improve a lot and that he was unsuited by the Irish bog the race was run in. I am not sure why there seems to be so much doubt about his stamina. By Dubawi out of a Tiger Hill mare looks just about ideal Derby breeding to me with plenty of dam's side stamina and the class and speed from Dubawi. Its also the case that Dubawi finished 3rd in Motivator's Derby, perhaps not quite getting home. However he was certainly quite stoutly bred himself, and has not been a sprint sire so far either. Then looking at his run over a mile on the stamina sapping ground. All hee seemed to do min the bog was stay and stay. I would be astonished if he failed to get 12 furlongs very well at 3 myself. |

I agree, CoT, that at first it seemed a bit disappointing, but on analysing the times I think it was a good performance. David Livingston showed improved form to beat him fair and square but, for me, he looks like one of those O'Brien horses that does all it's improving at 2 and I can see him eventually being given pacemaking duties next year. I think AM still has the potential to be a Derby winner.

awarded the pair best 2yo timefigures of the season in Europe, so would not be disappointed in Akeed Mofeed losing in that ground. Easier to lead than quicken up off the pace in heavy.
