I was hoping to knock something up in my spare time and maybe get it printed up and perfect bound at my works, kind of like similar to the Cheltenham Festival Betting Guide but want to try and do the cream of horse racing, flat and jumps and also the european and us pga golf tours

Just use results search on R.P site
for example; Tap in Ebor and get races back to 1988
Print off winners form.

That's the easy bit
Now you have to find the common denominators to the winners

Then keep a paper (or excel) file on the race and add to it.

If you want to go further back buy old raceform books on ebay

Also cut the race out of newspaper and keep for easy reference.
Useful for looking at top weights, CD winners and penalty carriers, apprentice riders etc

Buy into old newspaper web sites and do it that way if you want to work back  - Daily Express online back to 2000

There's no easy way and sooner you start the better

Do search on racecaller for certain races

Betfair blog at major meetings will give you 10 year stats
Weekender probably does same
Subsribe to Raceform Interactive and you get 10 year results for each race.

Getting costly now though (3 months for two via R.P shop)

If all what you want is a list of winners, weights, jockeys, trainers and times wikipedia has some of the major races such as Ebor or Great St Wilfrid.  The draw will be with some, but it will usually be the actual stall number on right handed tracks.  Otherwise pinza is sound advice.

Pinza is quite correct, tho for real success you'll have to result aerodynamics,i.e.like building a plane and getting it to fly you have to try and put in every variable, otherwise it wont fly. Winner finding is Harder than plane building, theres no handbook to read to guarantee success, one mistake and neither will work.
Some people think that you only have to go to the fridge, open up a can,and run their eyes over the racing page,to find winners, [bookies are full of theses clowns],it's a very complex thing, with human as well as animal interaction pulling all ways.Ten years is a fair start ,but race conditions change,i.e.weight compression, just one of many,so you have to prempt changes etc.Build up a 25 year record, and get form books going back to pre 1950's.
I'll leave it there, any response anyone.
