In the Dante he wasnt more than 3-4L through what was a pedestrian pace and had the toe to go between horses and in the derby if you had to name a winner 3 out it would have been him.
He may stay 12f but id say, unless something is amiss that he'd be a better horse at 10f, quite how good that is though would remain to be seen

I'm as certain as I can be without having seen the actual evidence to prove it, that Carlton House will prove a few lbs better when reverted to 10F. I think that still leaves him with a bit to find to challenge Workforce or So You Think over 10F though.

ran a lot like Tartan Bearer in Irish Derby after similar Epsom run. Better at 10f imho. Lacks that finishing kick over 12f but may lack it in G1 10f races also.

His Epsom run definitely suggested a slight drop in trip will suit him.
Today he just ran flat, it was obvious turning in the Moore wasn't happy and unlike at Epsom he found no turn of foot at all. The fact he still got as close as he did suggests the form really isn't up to a great deal and I'd worry about the 3 year olds (bar Frankel) when the big all aged races start.

depends what sort of 12furlongs...would probably win a slowly run easy 12furlongs...like the ones at Santa Anita where the first half mile is all downhill.

Agree entirely Des. It would seem the Dante form isn't that good considering Seville wouldn't be anywhere near right that day and he's proving to be very frustrating. Probably drop him back in trip but I won't be rushing to back him as he lacks something called real class.

I still think he ran some way below his best on Sunday, but he seems a bit fragile to me and getting him to run to his best won't be easy. I feel a longer break may do him good - assuming he is staying in training (and he hardly has a sexy stallion profile now) something like the Champion Stakes at Ascot might be a sensible next race

The O'Brien horses emptied Carlton House and he had nothing left. There was a headwind in the straight which made it a long 12f. A slower pace, faster ground, following breeze, downhill, lower class opposition - any or all of these and Carlton House will be ok at 12f. Unfortunately on Sunday the conditions did not help him.

Unlike AOB stoute couldn't keep his horse in peak condition for the Irish Derby and he ran no sort of race and wouldn't have won at any distance. His Dante form has now worked out well and if he can be in the same condition he was that day he must have a chance in The Juddmonte.

agree with unclepuncle - if he is to win a group 1 then i think it will be the champion stakes as it is generally not such a strong group 1. I would not be backing him though as I don't think he has shown enough yet to be a group 1 horse as there are way too many questions marks over this years Dante.
And no I don't think he stays the 12f and it remains to be seen if he has the class to win a group 1 especially against the older horses as this years middle distance crop seem preety strong.
