As we look forward to what will (hopefully if the big 2 both turn up) be a clash of the titans from Northern and Southern hemispheres next Saturday I was looking at the list of previous winners and pondering who was the greatest of them all.

In my time the race has been won by Mill Reef, Brigadier Gerard and the halcyon days were surely the mid-late 1980's with Dancing Brave, Sadler's Wells, Pebbles and Nashwan all emerging victorious. I am probably feeling a bit sentimental following his recent departure and other will disagree but for me it is MTOTO with his wins in 1987 and 1988.

Who do YOU rate the greatest?

I'm not sure if he was the greatest but Mtoto was certainly my favourite Eclipse winner. It was my first visit to a racecourse and I went there just to back Mtoto. I'd backed Reference Point in the Derby but had massive confidence that Mtoto would beat him after his win at Royal Ascot. I'm not sure I'd be quite as gung ho about his chances now I've experienced a few more ups and downs of the game but he was a great bet. Unfortunately I didn't back him for his second Eclipse but it was great to see him win. There was something almost magical about watching racing during that era.

Thinking about this led me to have a look back on You Tube at his races.

That sweeping run in the King George in 1988 to beat Unfawain with Willie Carson up was just something else, Carson getting first run while Roberts had to bide his time behind a wall of horses coming around the bend before he really unleashed him and he scorched to the front. Something else.

i would think mill reef's 5l thrashing of caro, was the best performance in the eclipse.
the best horse to run in the eclipse brigadier gerard, who only won by a length, but not his best trip 1m 2f or going.

With Briagdier Gerard, Mill Reef, Wollow, Nashwan, Pebbles, Sea The Stars and of course Dancing Brave having all won the great race I personally wouldn't have had Mtoto on my mind.

No disrespect to the horse I remember him more as a thrilling scrapper than I do a high class animal.

I thoroughly agree with Ribotman on Mill Reef who was an amazing horse. He did it all so smoothly and just glided past them.

I doubt if even the Brigadier would have beaten him at 10 furlongs.

Guess I loved that scrapping and his never say die attitude as in his win to get the better of Derby hero Reference Point.

And of course Sea The Stars. What a superstar achieving what no horse has done before. Mick Kinane rode that horse like a motorbike, one of the few horses with such a high cruising speed and the gears to be able to quicken once, then quicken again. In the Eclipse he seemed to toy with Rip Van Winkle before going again to put the race to bed.

I'd certainly put his Eclipse successes ahead of Wollow's, who only got it on a disqualification.

Oratorio for me Figgis - a superb performance under an equally brilliant ride Grin

Hope all is well my friend.

Hi SOF, surely not ahead of Giant's Causeway?
Report soldieroffortune June 27, 2011 10:41 PM BST
No you're right my friend, Giant's put in a superb display to win it.

I guess Oratorio sticks in the memory because of my fondness for him. He was an incredibly lazy individual but a racehorse with huge talent and ability and when we saw glimpses of it he was truly brilliant Grin

SOF,I think you borrowed my rose tinted glasses sticking up your man as the greatest winner there...

There seems to have been a bit of oversight - someone who has yet to get a mention is the Daddy himself - 1984 winner Sadlers Wells

SOF Oratorio one of my Favs too. Backed him when he won this and couldn't believe the price he was when he won the Irish Champion. Lazy as fook alright but possessed of one of the most amazing turns of foot I've ever seen, Great horseLove

best winner of race or best horse to win the race?
Report zilzal1 June 29, 2011 10:43 AM BST
Best Horse was the Brig.

Sadlers Wells got the run of the race, Eddery was in the right place at the right time and Time Charters jockey had one of those runs being on the rail for around a furlong and a half

funny enough the eclipse win of dancing brave was the race he was least remembered for, and after watching it on you tube again the other day it made me wonder why, he was a freak of a racehorse the best i have ever set eyes on no doubt and his eclipse win was  something else, but my vote would also go to mtoto, from the sheer brilliance of dancing brave to the battle hardened mtoto, he sure loved a scrap
