After 2 great meetings which horses are on your shot list for next season and for which races.
My own.
Spirit Son: I took to this horse big time when when he beat Jonjo's Palace Jester. The Jackdaw horse was fancied but Spirit Son made complete mincemeat of him. Couldn't believe he was still 20/1 after his next race when hammering Cedre Blue. Albeit Cedre Bleu is more of a chasing type he had set such a strong gallop he left Titan De Sarte in his wake prior to meeting Spirit Son.
I got stuck into Spirit Son at 20/1 and 16/1 only to see him go down to Alferof in the Supreme. However he through inexperience lost the race just after the 3rd last when the sudden injection of pace caught him napping but the way he fought back will hold him in good stead for the future.
However he looked to have a very hard race at Cheltenman so I cut my bet drastically yesterday as I though Sam Winner might be too tough for him.
Can't be right all the time[;)]
I guess I'll have to wait until next year to make my fortune from him and while I slipped up at Aintree I did take some 20/1 for next year's Champion Hurdle and 14/1 can still be had for those with the insight.
Hurricane Fly I supported all year but he'll be 8 years old next season and while there is nosign of him losing his speed yet he won't be getting any faster. Binocular has serious problems he simply was all wrong yesterday and the time before. I expect Nicky to have him fighting fit early next year and win what he can as the Champion Hurdle may prove beyond him. Peddler's has ben exposed as quite not good enough and he'll no doubt go chasing and I can'rt ber having Zarkandar at any price.
Champion Hurdle: Spirit Son
Long Run looked brilliant in the Gold Cup as he did in the King George but I'm far from convinced he is the next Kauto Star. He has much more to fear from the younger brigade than he has from 2 old age pensioners who are well past their best. Captain Chris was slow to get there but he's improved at just the right rate to ensure he'll be up there with the best of them next season. He had the speed to win an Arkle despite the fact he has 3 miles written all over him. He looks a cracking bet at around 10/1 for the King George and may even end up winning a Gold Cup.

Bumper races have never been my forte but I spend an awful lot of time trying to spot that next future champion. I always thought Dunguib was a very good horse but coudn't bring myself to back him in the Supreme until the day when I admittedly had a small bet on him. Cue Card was a different ball game. Anyone who reads my threads will tell you I said he was the lay of the meeting. Flashy types like him seldom make the grade and after menorah was made to look like the next Pegusus by him I couldn't wait to lay him.
This season we have Cheltonian and while he looks decent I thought what we saw yesterday at Aintree was the best performance by a bumper in a very long time. Unlike Dunguib and Cue Card there's nothing flashy about Steps to Freedom he's a rock solid type with no quirks and a horse with a huge engine and a future to go with it. I've never backed a horse this early for The Supreme in my life but when the fellow goes hurdling look out the racing world. I here some smart cookies got 33/1 but the best I could get was 16/1 for peanuts and a bit more at 14/1 still on offer with VC I see.
Supreme Novices: Steps to Freedom
The Arkle always draws plenty of attention and Alferof is already fav but won't be carrying my money. Peddler's Crooss' odds will half the minute he's entered up but good hurdlers don't always make good chasers. He's dome an awful lot over the last 2 seasons and that may or may not affect him in the future. Sprinter Sacre is a very likable type but is very much in the same mould as Finian's Rainbow. no doub the'll make his mark over fences but I've just a feeling he might not be quite tough enough to win an Arkle. This season Get Me Out Of Here was expected to turn out to be a top class chaser and all was well until they tried to school him. A disater would be an understatement and with the season looming fast they switched him back to hurdling. Less said about his campaign the better but he did prove at Cheltenham he has lost none of his ability.
Armed with the facts he has no where to go over hurdles and he needs to learn how to jump a trip to Yogi Bresner could be on the cards and with more time to play with he should be in better shape to go novice chasing next season.
Jonjo has pulled of some impossible tasks and winning next years Arkle with GMOOH is not beyond his capabilities as a trainer. 25/1 will look huge the minute he jumps a fence.
Arkle: Get Me Out Of Here
Oscar Whisky showed just how good he is at his right trip and no doubt he'll go head hunting Big Buck's next season or Bob's Worth will. Won't matter damn which 5/4 is better than leaving spare cash you might never use in the bank. Hughie Green used to say Double your moiney and at 5/4 Big Buck's I'd trust PN to get him there 100% before I would any broker to double my cash.

No doubt I missed a few potential superstars. Did any of you guys spot anything worth looking taking a look at?

Qutio De La Roque - I had reservations about the ground for him for he handled it very well. I thought the reason they missed Cheltenham was because of the quick stuff, but apparently not. It was because they have doubts about him handling undulations but the cynic in me says they wanted to avoid Cheltenham this year and next year we'll see him at the Festival.
He has an excellent engine and any amoun of scope. The Hennessy at Newbury could be an ideal starting point. |

To be honest I think it was more down to Davy Russell looking after him than him handling the ground but you could be spot on with The Hennessy. Very likely he get more suitable ground in November and the handicapper shouldn't be putting him up too much. Cheers! I'll be looking out for him
