Remember its a handicap, much more so than in Red Rum's day when jumping was almost more important than being well in at the weights.
A pound of lead is twice as damaging over 4 miles than over 2 miles. The National is won by a horse that runs about 12 lbs + better than its official mark, in "normal" going conditions. Don't Push it will need to be at least 1 172 horse to win again , and I,m pretty certain he isn't and cannot win again. The best handicapped horse is probably What A Fido but he is certainly going to be better at being eaten than battling to win a National. Backstage, Quinz, Arbor and Monty all look capable of quite a bit better then they've shown yet for different reasons. Silver By Nature looks to have a great chance but he does seem to need soft ground and seems very unlikely to get it. If he did he would be the selected. |
