Did you go on Saturday, mully? I was in the Newton stand beside a party on an outing. What, if any, opinion do you have after the result in regard to the Grand National?

Bazzar-I was there too. That party were students from Stafford Uni, diverted up from Uttox I believe. Silver By Nature will need a wet meeting, if it's dry you can scrub it. That's all I really deemed from the race. Oh, Chief Dan George...that needs a quick, dry meeting

can anyone also explain to me the balloting procedure ?
money back on those balloted out i believe but is there a limit to the number in that situation ?
cheers mully can anyone also explain to me the balloting procedure ?money back on those balloted out i believe but is there a limit to the number in that situation ?
No. They just have be declared to run. Anything in that situation below 40th in the weights will be ballotted out. If it's a tie at that point, handicap mark at the time decides.

looking closely at the top 40 i cant see that many non runners in there this year always the odd ones but normally theres quite a few non runners in the top 40 i think 60 could be the benchmark this year i no theres 3 out already but we will c

I just went through the top 40 again a few times and I can't get it any more than 5 obvious ones. Tuesday 22nd is the next declaration. My spread would be 5-10 at this stage.

The Evan Williams-trained Deep Purple is one of eight to have been taken out, along with Tatenen, Tricky Trickster, Dream Alliance, Snowy Morning, Gullible Gordon, Meanus Dandy and The Sliotar.
Midnight chase still in then.

Very confusing news that. Mullholland told the press yesterday it was highly unlikely to run in the National.
Neil Mulholland has ruled out running Midnight Chase in this year's Grand National following his sterling effort in the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
The nine-year-old was no match for new king Long Run, or old warriors Kauto Star and Denman, but plugged on well at the death to claim fifth. Mulholland is thrilled with how his charge has taken those exertions and Aintree's totesport Bowl (April 7), rather than the National, will be his next assignment.
"I would say he'll go to Aintree next, but he won't be running in the National. He's only a second season chaser and we'll probably leave that for next year. The Bowl will be his race. I'm not sure if Long Run will be there or not, but we're going to be bumping into those horses a lot now anyway," said the trainer.
"He's come out of the race very well indeed - he's perfect. We were very happy with his performance. Fair play to all the other trainers as there were doubts hanging over a few of the horses, but barring Imperial Commander, all of them have run up to their marks.
"Obviously the race was run in a record time and our lad was only beaten 19 lengths, so he's run a very good race.
"We definitely don't have any regrets about running. I thought he was going to be tailed off at one stage and I was about to bury my head, but then he's stayed on really well at the finish.
"Our fellow is really a top handicapper and we've had a really good run with him. He doesn't owe anybody anything and hopefully he can pick up prize-money in the top races and maybe win a nice one somewhere down the line."

Probably a couple will come out due to bad prep/scope or something like that. Then likely that a few of the irish horses will come out when the weights are released for the Irish national and the ground becomes clearer.

Yes, One Cool Cookie but don't really fancy him much now anyway so have laid some off.
If horses have the same weight, is the pecking order decided by Phil Smith's discretion or by current OR? If it is the latter, how do you factor in the Irish horses - is it taken on their official Irish rating?

im curious about this too, speedy - i asked this q on another thread and was told names around the limit were drawn from a hat so that horses allocated identical weight were ordered to either just get in or have a reserve number. Though im not sure how close to the day of the race that this order is known - any knowledge would be appreciated

In answer to speedy and toilet, Mr Smith uses a guide of recent form for horses handicapped with same weight, for instance because SKIPPERS BRIG comes lower than others with same rating because of alphabetical norms, as he has won since weights were published he goes to the top of those os same rating. Hope this helps.
