With Donald indicating Ballabriggs will go either to Donny or Kelso in early March for his GN prep, what do we think of the way this race shapes up, provided of course Haydock manage to get a meeting on..

Plenty of horses rated 155+ entered and at the very least I'd expect Mon Mome off 155 to run, so I was looking for something progressive that should stay, ideally rated 140 or less.

Summery Justice I like off about 137, very unexposed and won at Bangor in November when Venetia wasn't in any form but TELENOR's run last Friday in the Thyestes screamed future winner to me, especially over this sort of trip. He ran off 137 in Ireland but we all know that that could be higher over here.

The only entry from Ireland, I'll wait for any news about his next race with interest

Carruthers off a very lenient looking 148. He will love the extra distance too.

Would have thought Silver By Nature is an intended runnerConfused

Like the look of Maktu at a very early stage
Report PFtrader February 1, 2011 8:20 PM GMT
Maktu entered in the 3m 4f chase at Ffos Las this Saturday and jocked up at the 5 day stage

Wouldn't expect him to run in both races over extreme distances less than 2 weeks apart, watch your bets

What about Merigo now he is intended to run here according to Parker
Report bazzar February 7, 2011 12:22 PM GMT
Merigo's trainer says he does not think he will get of his handicap mark, yet he had him entered to run today AYR, but in a hurdle race which even if he had won,  would not have affected the handicap and as the Haydock trial is 4 days AFTER  the weights publication, can not be raised in the weights unless the top weight at each acceptance stage, is withdrawn and ALL weights go up in accordance, this would still not guarantee that MERGO got in as quite a huge number of withdrawals would be needed, about 70 I think.

Indeed he is though that was only announced this week and my original post was 9 days ago...

Have it on good authority that silver by nature has come good at the right time and a good run is expected on saturday. Same guy gave me devotion to duty from the russell stable last week that cruised home at 6's. Also etxalar from same stable could be heading to 4 mile amateur race at cheltenham and is also expected to go well.

Le Beau Bai for me.
Has a decent pull with West End Rocker, and the softer the better.

If Mr Tellwrong's going stick readings are correct, and if the forecast heavy rain (BBC) comes tonight, the ground will be bottomless, silver by nature for me.

At a 3,9 reading it wont be able to take much more, thats the lowest reading ive seen for Haydock for a couple of years
Report pedro b February 19, 2011 5:51 AM GMT
can,t believe no ones picked up on west end rocker but it,s going to be silver by nature who romped home in this 12 months ago in similar conditions and is only 6lbs higher see you there

Strugling to see past Curruthers off this mark and the heavy ground. Trainer doing well just now. Missed the 7's but got some 13/2.

Pedro, Silver by nature was NOT engaged in the national last year!!!
Report abbott February 19, 2011 12:06 PM GMT
Jaunty Journey 100s the win 20s the place.

Looking through todays race I must admit that the first thing that drew me to the NTD runner was his low weight of 10st2lbs, with the going heavy and rain continueing to fall this will be a total slog and I am worried that anything near the top of the weights will struggle.
Next thing I liked was his bits of good form round Haydock over hurdle and in particular his Novice form with the likes of Great Endevour (was going very well coming to the 2nd last only to be nudged by the winner just before the fnce and jink over it) and Cannington Brook and Meanus Dandy.
Looking at his Handicap form he was actually going and jumping really well in the Kelso national before slipping on landing 6 out and UR.

After this they put the blinkers on.
NTO he ran well for a long way over C&D but was PU in the end.
Again running well at Warwick he jumped ok but got the 10th all wrong.
FTO this season his jumping went to pot and he smacked most of his fences after watching it again I am amazed he managed to stay on his feet.
That said he did and he was only beaten 15L in 4th by Etxalar who he has a 7lbs pull in the weights with today.
LTO he was put back over hurdles and whilst he had a few indifferent jumps he ran well on the hole. Still leading on the home bend I feel he paid the price of trying to go with the easy winner (upped 17lbs for the win) Universial Soldier and was fading when making a bad mistake 2 out (eased afterwards).

They key thing today is that the blinkers are now of and he now has cheekpieces, if these have the desired effect and get him to concentrate on his fences I feel that he has the class to win of this mark. We know he loves the ground and a true test so at 100s i think he is well worth a small e/w

think you.ve got yuor wires crossed there bazzer i meant he romped home in the equivalant race last year and to my delight he,s done it again and if it comes up heavy at aintree then my advice would be to get on
Report doogs February 20, 2011 1:37 PM GMT
He's got a lovely weight for the National but the ground will be very important for him, needs a good bit of cut, here's hoping he gets it
Report bazzar February 20, 2011 1:39 PM GMT
Not at all, I was alluding to the fact that last year he did not have the Grand National engagement, but this year he has and a very hard race at Haydock MAY take the edge off for the National.
Ginger NEVER won with red rum at Haydock before he won his Nationals, although some have won,, the immediate race before, most have been beaten. Don't Push It and Mon Mome were beaten before their Nationals.

It all depends on the horse. 20 years ago I backed Seagram ante post for the National before he won at the Festival, which made me less confident on the day.  He still went on to win, beating the Gold Cup winner in the process, so the 1-2 only had a three week gap after hard races.

For SBN it seems a similar gap from Haydock to the National that he had from the Welsh National to Haydock last year.  I thought he jumped really well yesterday and if it comes up soft at Aintree he would have a major shout.
Report joeshmo February 20, 2011 9:07 PM GMT
Etxalar will go at cheltenham for lucinda russell in the 4 mile amatuer jockeys race and will win!!
I gave you silver by nature yesterday and devotion to duty last week. The yard is flying and the only thing that will stop silver winning the national is a fall or the connections refusing to run it in favour of the scottish equivelent. It better run, ive been backing it at 55's.
Report pedro b February 21, 2011 8:21 AM GMT
sbn is a serious doubt for the grand national it is understood that the wife of owner/breeder mr G Brown is against the idea i can see her point but it would be ashame having areal chance of winning
Report bazzar February 21, 2011 9:15 AM GMT
Joe, you did pass on the info for SILVER, your contact is very good do not abuse the privelege.
PedroB, the Duchess of Westminster was of the same mind about ARKLE and Mrs Brown looks after him when not in training, it seems she is the one to be persuaded, so everyone with an interest will be trying their utmost to persuade her.
He is very good and I backed his sire to win the ST LEGER trained by John Dunlop, strangely he never showed a liking for soft/heavy going if my memory serves.
Report bazzar February 21, 2011 9:33 AM GMT
Joe, ETXALAR is not entered in 4 mile 'chase at
Cheltenham, maybe the intention was there but not
entered.

Lucinda said on her website 19/02/11 : Etxalar found the heavy going too much and he will aim for better ground, most likely the Scottish National
Report bazzar February 21, 2011 1:40 PM GMT
Also on Lucind's web site she says SILVER will go to the National if going is good or soft.
Report pedro b February 21, 2011 4:01 PM GMT
Hi bazzer dont think we can put SBN in the same league as Arkle just yetbut i get your point and ihope they run him at aintree but i can see them going for the scottish national as that was the plan last year before a slight injury
