Uncle Mo mightily impressive in the Juvenile and the last time the race was held at Churchill the winner Street Sense doubled up in the Derby.
I dunno in the back of my mind I keep thinking he's an Indian Charlie and most of his tend to have a bit too much speed for their own good so I worry a bit about the extra distance in the Derby. Maybe i'm just overplaying that a bit because his dosage and 2yr old form makes him a leading contender.
Then you have the Pletcher factor. Finally won the race and with the monkey off his back he could well start to kick out Derby winner after Derby winner. Horses settled in well in Florida and we should see him out soon. Heard the owner wants to win the Wood Memorial but Pletcher favours staying at Gulfstream or the Tampa Bay Derby.
The Mineshaft colt Dialed In represents the same connections as last year's massively unlucky Derby 2nd Icebox and was quite impressive last night in the Holy Bull...Theres been so much hype about this horse from the Zito camp that I really wanted to see what he was about last night. He dropped out 15 lengths last but absolutely sluiced through the field Arazi style to win going away very nicely. With that run style he looks to be a huge player in the Derby. 14/1 looks very tempting. Zito won double in the Holy Bull and Derby with Go For Gin back in the day so he knows what he's doing.
Another horse I'd chuck in is AWESOME PATRIOT for Bob Baffret. He's a confirmed two turn horse learning his trade out in California. Now they've got dirt back at Santa Anita we could well see a top class legitimate West Coast challenge. He's got the monster pedigree...Awesome Again out of a Cee's Tizy Mare (same sire as Tiznow)...Just got a feeling he might be one for later on in the year as he matures but if he gets his act together quickly he could be another kentucky Derby player. I like him more for the Classic.
One final one I like is To Honor and Serve. Form lines with Mucho Macho Man puts him on a par with Dialed In. Top Class Bernadidi colt representing the Hall of Famer Bill Mott. He's training well and could go for the Foutain of Youth next. He looks a goodun.
....
Whats everyone's thoughts? Quite like Dialed In at this point. He looked a bit special last night.
Have to admit I'm not a big follower of the US racing but like to watch the big races. Uncle Mo looks a super young horse and he will carry my bet in the Derrrby.

Waiting for the trials. Ante post punters burnt the last 2 years with Quality Road and Eskendereya.
Not watched the Dialed In race yet, but would have to be very impressive to sway me from uncle Mo.

I know Street Sense and Mine That Bird did it, and Ice Box so nearly did it last year but I really don't want to be on the colt that has 19 horses to pass in the Derby!

KENTUCKY DERBY NEWS: Track all the 3-year-olds on the Triple Crown trail
Trainer Rick Dutrow said Saturday that Boys At Tosconova has been sent to the farm in Kentucky and will not be back in training for a while.
Boys At Tosconova had been pointing for the Grade 3 Holy Bull here earlier this month but was taken out of training by Dutrow the week of the race.
“He just wasn’t right,” said Dutrow. “All the tests we took came back negative. I’m not sure what’s bothering him but he just wasn’t himself. I originally thought it was a knee, it might be an ankle. So we’ll just back off and let him regroup.”
Boys At Tosconova started four times at 2, posting two victories and two seconds including a 1 3/4-length decision over Stay Thirsty in Saratoga’s Grade 1 Hopeful

Brethren....SuperSaver's half brother (distorted humour the sire...same one as funny cide and a whole host of top 10f g1 winners) looked quite decent on Saturday in the Sam Davis at Tampa. Still undefeated 3/3. Posted a useful Beyer too.
Thanks to Smarty Jones we dont have to worry about that silly stat about undefeated horses ever winning the KD so thats one monkey of his back.
Noticed Biondetti still in the Graded Earnings list so I'll assume the boys in blue have the kentucky derby on their mind or they could just aim him straight at the Preakness like his ol' man Bernadini. Couldve just been over the top by the time he ran in the Juvenile last year.
Ben....you should follow DRFDerby too. pssed myself laughing when Jackson Bend sent me friends request last year.

The connections of Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) favorite Uncle Mo announced Feb. 22 his debut will be the $100,000 Timely Writer Stakes March 12 at Gulfstream Park.
Following a strong five-furlong breeze on Feb. 20 at Palm Meadows, trainer Todd Pletcher and owner Mike Repole said Uncle Mo would point toward the one-mile Timely Writer, an overnight stakes that was originally written for March 11. They said the second option for Uncle Mo is the March 12 Tampa Bay Derby (gr. II) if the Timely Writer fails to fill. “The Gulfstream Park surface is very similar to the surface that Mo’s training on every day at Palm Meadows,” Pletcher said. “There’s also the advantage of a twenty-minute van ride to Gulfstream as opposed to a four-hour ride to Tampa Bay. Mo’s been training exceptionally well since his return and I am very confident and comfortable with either the Timely Writer or the Tampa Bay Derby.” The connections have said all along that the Wood Memorial (gr. I) will be Uncle Mo’s final prep before the Derby. “Our number one goal and focus is to do what's best for Uncle Mo to have a very healthy and successful 3-year-old campaign,” Repole said. “Mo has more than enough graded earnings to qualify for the Derby and we both feel that the Timely Writer will set him up perfectly for the April 9 Wood Memorial at Aqueduct en route to a start in the Kentucky Derby on May 7. “In racing, there’s no one’s opinion I trust more than Todd Pletcher’s, and just knowing how excited he is about the way Mo’s training is very encouraging. With the race more than two and half weeks away, hopefully this will give Mo’s fans ample time to make arrangements to watch his 3-year-old debut.” Uncle Mo, by Indian Charlie , was named champion 2-year-old male after winning the Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (gr. I) on Nov. 6 at Churchill Downs, completing a perfect 3-for-3 season.

Dialed In beaten by a stablemate. Stay Thirsty (same owner and trainer as Uncle Mo) won on Saturday. Uncle Mo still on schedule for the Timely Writer at Gulfstream on Saturday. I read somewhere that negotiations were ongoing to have the race added to the TV schedule so everyone could see his comeback race. Not sure what stage they are at.

The horse was wrong. Take it from me, forget the trip, he ran over that trip in the Breeders Cup Juvenile and could have went another furlong that day without breaking sweat. The fact is, Uncle Mo wasn't right for whatever reason at the weekend but if they get him back to his best in 3 weeks time, he'll win the Kentucky Derby. The danger is The Factor.

LATEST ON UNCLE MO BELOW. Doesn't sound too good for backers at present.......
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Thoroughbred trainer Todd Pletcher, looking to explain previously undefeated Uncle Mo's disappointing third-place finish in last Saturday's Wood Memorial at Aqueduct Racetrack in New York, said Thursday that postrace blood tests point to a gastrointestinal infection.
According to a statement released by Pletcher, treatment for the infection began immediately and veterinarians cleared the former Kentucky Derby favorite to continue preparations for the opening leg of the Triple Crown.
The 2-year-old champion, who had been dominant in sweeping his first four starts, is still scheduled to ship to Churchill Downs on Monday. He is expected to have two workouts there to determine his readiness for the 1¼mile classic.
Interestingly, owner Mike Repole already mentioned the Preakness as a possibility for Uncle Mo's next start. "Though it has been a lifelong dream to run (in) and win the Kentucky Derby, if Uncle Mo is not 100%, we will skip the Derby and go right to the Preakness," Repole said.
Pletcher emphasized the need to exercise caution.
"If I do not feel that Uncle Mo is 100% for the Kentucky Derby, both Mike and I agree that he will not run. My main focus is to return Uncle Mo to optimum health in the next 23 days, and I'm optimistic that we can accomplish this goal."

Anyone got news on MasterofHounds? Graded earnings okay after his run in Dubai and he's still entered for the race.

The US sites are saying he is going to run as long as he satisfies AOB in his work over the next week.
This is the weakest KD field I have seen and there have been some shockers over the last few years.
So many probable starters coming off poor runs.

I could just imagine O'Brien with his M.I.B sunshades in the torrential Kentucky rain, taking Borel aside for a tactical talk and saying, "listen now Calvin, i'll tell you what it is, now listen, i tink you need to stay to the rail".

Not being following the American 3yo scene this year.
But delighted to hear Aidan plans on running Master of Hounds.
His run in the UAE Derby must give him an outside chance of causing an upset.

I wish we had someone who spoke their mind like Bob Baffert over here. For what it's worth i'll reiterate the belief i don't think he will run. I've read before that the trainer likes to save face. I mentioned above about the vets. Also, once the owner said that he will make a decision before betting opens, as it would be fairer on the punters, that sent the alarm bells ringing. There's no way on hell they would rush a decision to appease punters, having previously said they would wait until Saturday if need be.
Here's what BB said :-
Count three-time Derby winner Bob Baffert among those who discount Uncle Mo's bellyache.
"From what I've seen visually, there's nothing there that tells me the horse isn't ready to run," the trainer of Midnight Interlude said. "He's a good horse, I'm not believing that crap."

Uncle Mo will not run in the Kentucky Derby. I don't know connections but I have several sources in Arizona and they tell me the horse is a week or so away from full recovery. The horse is well but slightly behind schedule. He will be back for the Preakness a fresh horse.

Also backed Awesome Patriot but he hasn't made it.
Still going to need some luck tomorrow with DI's running style...and if he gets into real trouble Leperoux will just go ultra easy on him with the Prekness and that mega $5m bonus for winning the Florida Derby and Prekness up for grabs.
plenty of nice horsies in the race and all with chances...Soldat, AAA, Nehro, Midnight Interlude, both MuchoMachoMan and CommatotheTop are hard as nails....I like Animal Kingdom on looks. He's a stud. Even read one preview that fancied Master of Hounds big time because he'll stay every yard of the trip.
Poor Uncle Mo...sounds bad. not eating, losing weight, completely gone in his coat. surely thats his triple crown over. Best just to give him some time off now. They always have the Travers...lighter schedule could even be in his favour come the Classic.

Haven't had the time to really watch too many of the trails so my picks are little more than guesses but I'm going for Soldat and Master of Hounds.
Wide draw should help Soldat. Let him get near the front and not get trapped on the rail with dirt kicked in his face like in the Florida Derby. If he's able to sit just off the pace with a clear run he could go close.
Not much in Master of Hounds form says that he's anything above decent but I was pretty impressed by the run in Dubai having had to ship to the heat and it was first time out. He should be fine on dirt and he'll definitely stay.
Looks a pretty poor quality race so Dialed In could have an easy enough job in passing horses from the back, there may not be many left to pass at the final turn, just don't like deep closers when there are so many runners, and especially not at 4/1.
Might play him for the trifecta with my 2 though.

Backed Midnight Interlude too. His win in the Santa Anita Derby is legit. Top class horse. Will stay every yard of the trip. Baffret and Espinoza. yes please.
