Should be kept to the flat.  It jars with me when I see it in National Hunt racing. For example what was the point of running Nicene Creed on Saturday?
I suppose you could argue he was only beaten 22 and 3/4 lengths and it's feasible his rider was trying to slip the field but I think we'd all have significant doubts about that. Did the jockey disobey instructions? Does he know how to make the pace? Was the point to kid on that Menorah needed a fast pace when all the time they were manufacturing a slow pace because they'd discovered he could kick off that? All rubbish no doubt but my point is, running a pacemaker produced a Grade 2 race with no pace. It's a joke. The handicapper didn't know what to make of it. He raised the first and third 2 and dropped the second 1 which suggests he's fairly confident about their relative performances but doesn't want to stick his head above the parapet when comparing the three of them to the good horses that didn't run, in turn due to the false early pace. National Hunt has a soul worth protecting. Rant over.

Golden Freeze (Jenny Pitman) the ultimate 'pacemaker' from memory he was the horse who put the great Carvills Hill off his striide in the Gold Cup. Pipe and Pitman going at it afterwards.

Yeah, that one sticks in my mind as I backed Carvill's though I don't think Golden Freeze was a pacemaker as such. He was just asked to go alongside at every fence to put the big horse off. So each time Carvill's blundered Golden Freeze would be reined back. Happened quite a lot as I recall and it must have been hard work for the fence repairers afterwards. I suppose what bugged people then is that GF was entered with the intention of ruining the chance of another horse, rather than achieving the best possible placing. That sort of negativity goes against the grain as well though I wasn't too bothered that Carvill's lost as a GC winner ought to jump better than he did.

Brave Inca's Irish Champ win in Jan 09 was a great example of a pacemaker or two working

Did ruk have a go at Hobbs for running a pacemaker? Like they do when Ballydoyle do. ???

I have no problem with a genuine pace in any race, especially the top quality races. Pacemakers have always been used and are a part of racing.
