I thought Prima Vista was very impressive lto , no betting yet but will be close to favouritism imo. And will be interesting to see what the handicapper says as the horse that finished 2nd, Tijuana Dancer, didn't get the best of rides imo and will be on better terms.

don't think i've ever come close to finding the winner of this race, 30 runners who've all been plotted up for it Silly

PRIMA VISTA has been installed as the 5-1 favourite with Paddy Power for Sunday's MCR Hurdle, formerly run as the Pierse Hurdle, after 29 entries remained at Tuesday's forfeit stage.

The Noel Meade-trained Prima Vista was raised 15lb for his facile win at Leopardstown last month and is likely to be joined inthe €100,000 contest by stablemate Asigh Pearl, raised 6lb for beating top-rated Fosters Cross by two lengths at Fairyhouse in December.

Wexford trainer Len Whitmore, who has just four horses in his care, is hoping that 20-1 chance Casey Top can register a rare big-race win for the yard.

The former winning Irish pointer won a valuable handicap hurdle at Killarney in July and is reported to be on target for Sunday's race by his trainer.

Whitmore said: "He's going to run in the MCR Hurdle and he's had a little bit of a break to freshen him up for his first time back as he was campaigned all summer.

"The trip might be a bit short for him which would be my concern as he would be better at two and a half miles, but it's a good old pot and we'll take our chance."

Tony Martin, who won the race with the well-backed Xenophon in 2003, has three remaining - Montan, Northern Alliance, Tijuana Dancer - while Dermot Weld, successful with Archive Footage in 1999, is represented by New Phase.

Ireland's champion trainer Willie Mullins won this race with Adamant Approach in 2002 and he has left in Call The Police, Doctor Deejay and Final Approach.

The race failed to attract a sole British-trained entry as it was race was whittled down from the original entry list of 48, while the going at Leopardstown was described as soft on Tuesday.

Does 15lbs not turnaround the form with Tijuana Dancer?

He did win very easily and Meade said in the Weekender before Christmas that he needed the horse to go up in the weights to get in. I'd be fairly sure he's still well handicapped.

A few of the trends would be against Prima Vista, Meade is 0-0-20 with his runners in last 10 years and only 1 of the 26 horses to carry a penalty in this have made the places (none won).

Fair points but I don't know if he's carrying a penalty or has been reassessed since his win (haven't looked at the cards and can't see him being much shorter on the day).

No point in backing him at the current prices.

I said after his win i'd back him but only if It was around 10/1. Perhaps that was wishful thinking, but not interested at 5/1.

Agree with Tucho, Tijuana Dancer with the turnaround is the one for, not sure he had the best of rides lto but i'll wait until race day before deciding.

Where did you see that stat on horses carrying penalties?

Weight (Win-Place-Runners)

Horses carrying 10-12 or more: 1-11-72

Horses carrying 10-11 or less: 9-19-190

Horses carrying 10-11 or less are favoured, especially in softer ground.

Top Weight: 07009402000 (0-2-11)

Horses carrying a penalty (0-1-26) have a particularly bad record, gaining just one place from 26 representatives, 13 of which were sent off 12/1 or shorter.

give a small chance to mosstown. looks like its had problems,
coming back gradually. trainer respected, and looked like a classy
stayer last year. 33/1 would be fair price, double that on bf.

that penalty stat was from the trends on Racecaller.com, think it's about right having looked at past resutls

Age (Win-Place-Runners)
5yo: 1-5-65
6yo: 3-15-69
7yo: 3-5-64
8yo: 3-3-36
9yo: 0-1-17
10yo+: 0-1-11
9 of 10 winners were aged 6 to 8, though they did make up approximately 64.5% of the total runners.

Weight (Win-Place-Runners)
Horses carrying 10-12 or more: 1-11-72
Horses carrying 10-11 or less: 9-19-190
Horses carrying 10-11 or less are favoured, especially in softer ground.
Top Weight: 07009402000 (0-2-11)

Official Ratings
Horses rated 127 or higher: 0-4-33
Horses rated 116 to 126: 7-17-125
Horses rated 115 or lower: 3-9-104
7 of 10 winners were officially rated between 116 and 126 & they have filled 24 of 40 places (including 14 of 20 places in past 5 years)

Recent/Past Form
10 of 10 winners won or placed last time out
9 of 10 winners posted their highest RPR in the last year on their last start (exception posted highest RPR on penultimate start)
7 of 10 winners had run in the past 35 days
10 of 10 winners had run no more than 4 times that season
10 of 10 winners had run in 3 to 9 hurdles
10 of 10 winners had run in no more than 5 handicap hurdles
8 of 10 winners had yet to win a handicap hurdle
10 of 10 winners were second season hurdlers

Other Races
Ladbrokes.com H'cap Hurdle winner (Un Hinged): 005F (0-0-4)
Bar One Racing H'cap Hurdle winner (Assigh Pearl): 85050 (0-0-5)
Star Best For Racing H’cap Hurdle winner (Prima Vista): 006070 (0-0-6)
4 of 10 winners were placed at Leopardstown Christmas meeting
No winner of this race had previously won a h'cap hurdle worth 10K+.

Running Style
8 of 10 winners raced in mid-division or tracked the leaders
In general it is not easy to come from too far back in this race and being situated in the front 7 or 8 is highly preferable.

Trainers
Unsurprisingly no trainer has been able to dominate this race.
Willie Mullins (1-5-28) trained 3 of the first 4 home last year.
Tony Martin (1-1-5) and Jessica Harrington (1-1-11) have both saddled the winner and a placed finisher in past decade.
Noel Meade (0-0-20) and Eddie O’Grady (0-0-12) have failed to train a placed finisher in this from their combined 32 runners in the last 10 years.

Price
9 of 10 winners were priced between 5/1 and 16/1
The one big shock in this race was Penny’s Bill at 50/1 in 2009, when a slightly fortuitous winner over the favourite Psycho in 2nd.
Favourites (3-1-14) have gained 3 wins in the past decade, giving a level stakes profit of 6.00.

Summary:
Based on the trends from the past 10 years you are looking for a horse:
Aged 6 to 8
Placed last time out (ideally at Leopardstown Christmas meeting)
Posted their highest RPR
Run no more than 4 times this season
Run 3 to 9 times over hurdles
Run in 5 or fewer handicap hurdles (winning no more than 1)
Second season hurdler
Carrying less than 10-12
Officially rated 116 to 126
Tends to races prominently
Trained by Tony Martin or Willie Mullins
Priced 16/1 or shorter
