Kempton clerk of the course Brian Clifford was in confident mood despite getting ready to put frost covers down on Tuesday.

The immediate forecast is poor, with temperatures expected to dip as low as -6C or -7C by the end of the week, the longer range predictions are far more encouraging.

Clifford said: "The frost covers start going down tomorrow, as the temperatures could go as low as -7into the weekend and we can't take any chances, but from the middle of next week to Boxing Day we are looking at temperatures of plus 2C and 3C degrees, and for Boxing Day itself they are saying at the moment that it could be 1C overnight and then 3C on the day itself."

Think they'd get some manpower in and get shovelling next week to give it every chance.

Im no professor but I am ex army and we were taught that snow insulates. The ground had no frost in it prior to snowing so therefore should be left on until the threat of frost has gone and then removed as late as possible. Removing straight away would increase the risk of the ground freezing.

Fair point think them getting the covers on so early was good. How many volunteers will they get Xmas day though to take the snow off the covers if still any, presuming they will be too heavy to move with the snow on top?
Report revedesivola December 18, 2010 8:53 PM GMT
i see theres 7nh meetigs on that day. thats a bit excessive is it not

Think most would be happy with the really high quality Kempton card if it was the only survivor.

Maybe they should look to remove the snow from the covers on Friday as they are hoping the temperatures will rise the Saturday. Dont think too many would turn out the Xmas day Saturday to shovel the snow, they will have had the advantage of the insulation against the worst up until Thursday then spend Friday shovelling the snow off the covers, remove the covers Saturday morning?

It has to be touch and go, nothing is looking to warm up until wednesday at the very earliest, the f/c for weds is a maximum three then heavy rain, other f/cs say friday it may warm up. imo then it will have to be above five for a while.
Report eric_morris December 18, 2010 9:57 PM GMT
The rain could be an advantage if it helps melt most of the snow.
Report zilzal1 December 18, 2010 10:07 PM GMT
The daytime temps are not due to go up above three during the day though until wednesday at the very earliest, covers or not imo its got to get into the ground a bit and it needs to be more than a max of three it aint coming out quick. If the rain clouds arrive at the wrong time then its curtains.

Was going to go but cant see it if the forecast is anywhere near correct, if the long term is right then i cant see anything this side of 2010 and if the worst case ones come true its going to be the 1st 2-3 weeks of 2011 wiped out as well.

Apparently the frost isnt in the ground today the covers have been doing their job ... SLife site article.

They thought that about Ascot until they tried to take the things off on Friday morning!!

Cant see a week of sub zero figures not having frost underneath, still we live in hope..

Is say that High Society on CH5 with Grace Kelly is around the 4/6 markPlain
Report eric_morris December 18, 2010 10:37 PM GMT
I am more hopeful than that .. maybe as I am a backer, sure the antepost layers would happily sidestep Kauto now.
Report zilzal1 December 18, 2010 10:43 PM GMT
Don't tell me you've got Grace Kelly in a double with Frankel as well Laugh

Looking further ahead to the showpiece King George meeting on Boxing Day, Clifford was able to issue an upbeat bulletin.

He said: "I spoke to John Kettley this afternoon and temperatures will stay cold until Thursday and Friday.

"Then into Christmas Day and Boxing Day, we could see 3C on Christmas Day and 4C on Boxing Day.

"We are in a good position, there's no frost underneath the covers and the vulnerable areas I have checked all seem fine.

"We are still a week tomorrow away and time is on our side."
