Have had this one on my mind for a few weeks now and after his run on Saturday in the Hennessey I am a lot more confident in his chances should he run in this race.

I think bar weight carried he has an ideal profile for a National winner.

He has very good form over both hurdles and fences. He has been placed twice in grade 1s over hurdles and has stepped up on last season's chase form finishing a good second in the Charlie Hall and then no disgrace in finishing 4th in the hottest Hennessey for years ahead of the likes of the likes of Carruthers and Taranis, who themselves are pretty useful yardsticks, and not all that far behind Denman who for me ran a fantastic race and although TTO was in receipt of a lot of weight, it was still a good performance fromn him to get so close to Denman.

It seems typical of him these days that he gets a little outpaced in his races but always seems to finish his races off well, and this suggests to me that the National trip would be well within his reach, and he will improve for it in my opinion

He has won in fields of 18 and 15 in his hurdling days and been placed twice in fields of 18 over fences, and a respectable 5th of 24 in the William Hill chase at this year's festival, so the hustle and bustle of a Grand National shouldn't worry him too much

As it stands now he'd be running off a mark of 152, which traditionally is a little high for a National winner but given the compression of the handicap it's given those higher up in the weights more of a chance (Don't Push It and Black Apalachi - last year's 1-2 ran off 153 and 154 respectively) and I think The Tother One is classy enough to have a chance off that mark.

Nicholls comments after the Hennessey (Niche Market and The Tother One ran cracking National trials) suggests that a tilt at this race is on the agenda

One worry is that his jumping isn't the most fluent, which I think you could factor into his price. It's quite possible that the National fences can help a horse to overcome this (DPI was never the most fluent if I recall correctly)

All in all he has big field form, he's certainly classy enough and I have no doubt he'll stay the trip

I know it's early days yet of course but i've had to take some of the 33/1 on offer.

good luck Happy

Should imagine it will go for the Scottish National.

100% with you. Backed him on Saturday evening. The worry is that he's too much of a thinker. Hits flat spots in his races.

See Nick Mordin rates The Tother One’s chance in GN providing he has a good break before the race – i.e. no Cheltenham (please Mr Nicholls)

Here’s what the handicapper said: “I also dropped The Tother One from 156 to 152. He ran creditably in fourth on Saturday but has never won a handicap so I am trying to encourage connections to believe he has a chance if he runs in one.”

Off 152 he’d have to be on my shortlist too

Shortlist:
The Tother One
Oscar Time

Good luck

I think he could run well over the fecnes at his first attempt but ultimately his jumping will let him down. With a bit more experience I could see him having a good crack in 2012.

Good argument you make, hadn't really thought of it like that but must have a chance.

Jumping nowhere near good enough I am afraid.

Agree with everyone re jumping and horse was struggling to go the pace in the Hennessy. Also is rather on the small side which is a negative for Aintree. Can see it running on past non stayers for a place but not the winner for me - I would fancy Niche Market more of the Nicholls pair

Not sure his running style will suit. If he is out the back hitting a few in teh national he will struggle to make up the ground at the business end. That said I do think he will win a decent prize this year.

Interesting one, it'd be in the back of my mind that he does not travel or jump well enough, but he'll surely stay..

Would struggle to jump round, even with the fences being a lot easier nowadays. From the Nicholls stable i would be interested in Tricky Trickster if they can get him back to form.

Can see the concerns about jumping, mentioned it myself in my opening post. Jumping would obviously have to improve to get round but it could be that the National fences will set him alight, it has done with others before.

All that is speculation but the simple thing is if he were to line up (looks quite likely) he is not a 33/1 shot.

Jumped like a pig in the Hennessey so I would be very surprised if got round

Yup, backed him in the Hennessey and he clipped pretty much all of the opening fences, finished really well but no chance of getting away with that at Aintree.

I am stupid backed at 70's, 80's and 110's today, i am sucker for the hennessey form lines.

I hope Silver by Nature gets back on his feet before the race Andy or he won't be winning anythingLaugh
