On paper this looks the most competitive Paddy Power in a long time. We have the RSA 3rd, Arkle 4th, Byrne Group 1st and 2nd, the Ryanair 2nd and the winner of the Grand Annual all lining up. Add to that top rated hurdler Catch Me, recent c&d winner Edgbriar and Haldon winner Ticho Polos and this is a race to saviour.
My long term fancy for the race has been the Pipe trained Great Endeavour but today Im looking for a bit of value from the outsiders.
Cant Buy Time was a slow burner early on in his career. Unable to win in his first 7 races 3 of which were chases he found himself of the low mark of 100 at Southwell 2 years ago. He went on to win 4 of his next 5 with his only defeat coming in the Tommy Whittle when possibly taking the race up to soon. Heavily backed on the lead up to the Festival he went of Fav for the NH Chase and came to challenge the leaders on the home bend before failing to get home. Finishing the season a faller in the National he was now rated 142.
Never in contention on his seasonal debut in 09 he wasn’t seen until Jan over today’s C&D when coming with a late run to take the Grade 3 affair. This form is rock solid. He gave Private Be 11lbs and under 3L beating in 2nd, Mr McGoldrick 3lbs a further 2&1/2L back in 3rd and Razor Royal another 4L back in forth receiving 2lbs(won the Racing Post Chase 2 starts on).
Over the same C&D later that month The Sawyer won the Grade 3. This time Private Be was under 1L 2nd and Mr McGoldrick a further 6L back in 3rd, the difference being with the Jocks claim he was getting 9lbs from the 2nd and a stone from the 3rd. Even with the 7lbs the jock takes of today I struggle to see why The Sawyer is half the price of the selection.
Looking at his recent form you would think that he is inconsistent but I would take the opinion that his trainer may sometimes be looking past his current race. Not really in the race at Newbury nto I feel his target was the National where he fell for a 2nd time. FTO this season he badly looked in need of the run and that experience should put him spot on for today.
With a host of front runners in the field I expect like many Paddy Powers the race will be run at breakneck speed and a few of these exciting but inexperienced fancied runners may get in trouble. If all goes to plan it should set the race up for something coming from the back late on and Cant Buy Time could well be the one.
Whilst I would have been happier with more rain over night I feel at 50/1 e/w 1,2,3,4,5 he is a good bet who should at least place and depending on how the fancied runner perform you never know?
P.S. Whilst Jonjo selected Sunnyhillboy as the one he would pick on CH4 this morning he did state that Cant Buy time was working well and is in great form and home and both would have great chances.
