I think the presence of Long Run in the race may have scuppered GE's chances. If Long Run ran away with the race and GE finished reasonably close then his handicap mark would have been blown. As David Pipe said, he thought Long Run was a certainty so I'm not sure if this race was the target for GE (no prep run over hurdles ??).
Wouldn't write off this horse just yet.

Looked to me like he was hanging and may have gone wrong but never really jumping. Could he also need a step up in trip and better ground over fences as he ran poorly on softer ground last year?

Flyingbolt - take your point about the prep run, but still think that if Long Run had won easily then anything finishing close up could have been murdered by the handicapper.
Watching the race again, I actually thought the horse was not knocked about too much after it was beaten.

Sausage1 have a look at the head on shot on RUK replays. Hits the horse at least two or three times down the shoulder when its held, coming up the run-in, and several more times behind the saddle, for no apparent reason.

The apparent reason was , wrongly predicted by me, that they wanted it to look like they were trying.
Pipe is the master of misinformation - smashing bloke have met him in the Pheasant a few times but you get nothing from him. In fact he puts you away with aplomb. That horse is very well handicappled and they all know it.
