Now I'm really confused.
I thought there was a rule in Ireland that if the topweight was a non-runner, even on the day of the race, the weights were raised so that the second-top weight carried at least 11-7, if he were set to carry less.
It's a rule I hate, but at least it stops connections declaring one to keep the weights down for a more fancied runner, I thought.
Mossbank of Ml. Hourigan's was a non today about an hour before the first, so I acted on the basis that the weights would go up 6lbs, putting his other runner Dancing Tornado on 11-7. Then reading the forums tonight and looking at the result I find the weights didn't rise.
The mind boggles here- at what point does the rule operate or not operate? If it is arbitrary, as it seems to be, then how do punters know what weight will be carried? Most importantly of all how does it discourage people from manipulating the weights in valuable handicaps? I'm certain the weights for the Pierse Hurdle went up at a similarly late stage a couple of years ago.
Is it that Noel O'Brien says "that Hourigan is a genuine fella and wouldn't have done this deliberately?"
Lastly, this is not pocket talk as I backed the winner (and Dancing Tornado) and tipped it up on the purple.

Think that only applies if the bottom weight is out of the handicap CH.

PDJ/IS.

You are spot on PDJ.
Bit unsatisfactory though as if Ml. H hadn't declared Mossbank Dancing T would have carried 6lbs more. Not saying for a minute it was a deliberate act to keep the weights down but the current rule is open to such abuses.

I agree totally CH - personally think once the weights are out on the day of race that's the way they should stay.

Avoids complications and like you say those who want to abuse the system, not the first time Mossbank has been pulled out in recent months either (pretty sure this is the third time now).

I'd be amazed if he retained the ability to compete in a Hennessy- I still think he should be aimed at a handicap as he's been given a real chance. First time out is my only interest.

He's not low enough to make the cut for the Troytown or the Paddy Power off his current mark so his hands are tied in that respect. No option but to go for a conditions chase here or the Hennessy.

Royal Blood the 3rd reserve had to race from 6lbs out of the handicap. The rules should be changed so that they go up if a reserve gets into the race when out of the handicap.

In Listowel I heard Davy Russell was fit to be tied when Mossbank was withdrawn just before the race. Ml Hourigan wasn't one of his best friends. He would have ended up on the winner Alpha Beat for Charlie Byrnes on whom he had built up a sequence of wins. His contract with Mick O'Leary cost him the winning ride.

A balls of a rule. U can't move the goalposts at the last minute.
But it should have applied to the race yesterday.

And yes I did back Psycho.

Would the Hennessy not stretch Mossbanks stamina?
