Final Approach in the 5.00 at the Curragh looks big at 16's with Lads.
Finished 5th as a 3yo to Rite of Passage over 2m at Leopardstown last year, when he travelled like the best horse into the straight that day, and has since moved to Willie Mullins. A win and a place over hurdles followed before what I thought was an eyecatching run at the Curragh back in May over 1m 4f when never put in the race. That was the same race the stable won with Sesenta the year before and I expected Final Approach to take the same route as that horse and head to the 2m 4f handicap race at Ascot in June but he never appeared. May have had a problem since so it may need the run today, but this is a valuable prize today and it is worth taking a chance on his fitness.
He has had very little racing over a trip but is out of a Kahyasi mare who won over 1m 4f and this trip should be right up his street, particularly now he is a year older. Being by Pivotal the soft ground should hold no fears and the excellent G Carroll is booked taking 3lb off.
Will also have a saver and the forecast with Boulavogue in the same race. This one finished in front of Final Approach in the Leopardstown race and hasn't had many opportunities on the flat. His record in the last few years in September when returning from a break at Listowel is very good and I find it interesting they decided to miss that meeting and come straight here first time out.
Over at Ascot I am going to chance Anhar who gets softer ground for the first time in a while and his run last time out wasn't as bad as the form figures suggest. He attacked down the middle of the course at York whereas the winner and placed horses all came stands side and hopefully the cut in the ground will aid his cause.
