NOBLE STORM Gets in here now off a mark 3lbs below his last win and has shown promise this season in better races. Will need to be at the top of his game though against some of these and chances are others have the slight edge at present.
FOL HOLLOW Classy when on song and has won off this mark already this season. However, he likes to hear his hooves rattle and that obviously won't be the case today so he could flounder in the ground as other swoop on by.
ARCHERS ROAD Won at Chester on seasonal debut and showed fair form off similar marks since. Makin/Barron are a team to be feared at the moment but another step up is needed here if he is to land the spoils.
CHEVETON Won Bronze Cup as a result of falling mark last week and up 7lbs here. Remains only 1lb higher than when winning here last September though and two visits to the track have produced two wins. Shortlist material.
CONFESSIONAL Won well here at the start of the month in a race that is working out well and comes into this 5lbs higher as a result. Solid effort in Portland since and return to track/less competitive affair should suit. Could go well once more.
DUCHESS DORA A filly who has been running with tremendous credit all season; up there in all races bar the Portland latest. Needs to bounce back here and has been on the go all season, so potential others come here with more fire left in them.
DESERT PHANTOM Lightly raced and won here on debut in heavy conditions. Caught the eye when hampered behind Hotham at York in June; had a break since and two excellent placed efforts put him spot on for this. Buick in the saddle and big chance.
HOOF IT Looked on the upgrade earlier in the season but a string of weak efforts since then put strain on the confidence for this event. Yet to race on this easier ground and others come into this in much better form.
FOXY MUSIC Up 5lbs for an all the way success at Chester last time out and lightly raced this season having just four starts. Entitled to improve again but won't get the run of the race he enjoyed there.
HAZELRIGG Decent record here at Haydock and two runaway successes of late have shot his mark up 15lbs. Further improvement not out of the question and entitled to go well despite encountering vastly different ground here today.
LUCKY NUMBERS Regular at these North West tracks and can pop up on his day. However he was way down the field behind Confessional last time they met here and unlikely that form will be reversed here today.
STRIKE UP THE BAND Finished 3rd behind Cheveton here off 13lbs higher last season; so solid claims on that form and other bits and pieces. Very tricky to win with though and his early dash from the gates often sets the race up for something else.
WHOZTHECAT Lightly raced; but form has been patchy at best and he will need a significant rise in performance to outshine some of these.
SOLEMN Showed decent form this term and has shown his liking for today's soft ground conditions in the past (two wins from three). Likely to find this much more competitive and never won beyond class 4 as of yet.
WALVIS BAY Needs a faster surface than he will get today to show his best form and has tailed off a bit since showing early promise back in July/August. Probably one to watch for the time being.
FALASTEEN Should appreciate the drop down to 5f after showing up for a long way last time out over 6f before fading. Ground won't be an issue but he is another who has yet to show sparkle in race as classy as this; so may struggle once more.
HAAJES Has knocked on the door in a couple of these events throughout the season and likely another solid effort is on the cards. Doubt remains though that there will always be one too good for him in this.
SUMMARY
Hazelrigg is entitled to be favourite based on his last two comfortable wins. But stepped up two grades and in tackier conditions it may be worth taking him on with two who are sure to relish the ease in the ground. Cheveton comes here off the back of a taking win in the Silver Cup up at Ayr last week and can be expected to go well once more. He is on a mark now still below his best and just 1lb higher than when scoring here last September (two from two at Haydock). Everything looks to be in his favour for another bold effort at the track. The other who can go well is Desert Phantom. The softer the better for this lightly raced colt and he has come back from a mid season break to record two placed efforts. Jockey of the moment William Buick gets the leg up and he is another who is undefeated at Haydock.
