Might turn out to be a silly thread... but prepared to take the risk..

It Looks like a two horse race but I looked at the race in more detail, and what I noticed is that not many favourites win this race only 3 favs in the last 10 years have obliged. And not many favourites have won in consecutive years either...

Although Makfi has run in the guineas on good to firm, I think GF on Ascot course would probably not suit as much. Also the french have a poor record in the race which does cause some concern. I would argue performs lot better if some rain arrives.

For RIP backers there has not been many back to back winners of this race...   Seemed to have had a hard race last time on softer ground... I have my doubts on him...

My money is on Poets Place.... good luck!

Not crazy at all. Price should be 6/4 Makfi, 7/2 PP, 5/1 RVW or thereabouts imo. I doubt i will lay but instead will just back PP who I think can take this
Report a bit dizzee • September 23, 2010 8:13 PM BST
I have serious doubts about Poets Place staying this extra two furlongs, even if Lord David Barron does decide to supplement him at this late stage.

We have been throughn this.

Hearts of Fire is going to win.
Report Masterminded • September 23, 2010 8:50 PM BST
yep^

Hearts Of Fire couldn't even win last time as fav in a Group 3.

Makfi wins and Beethoven places
Report A_T • September 23, 2010 9:13 PM BST
A lot of people seem to like Hearts of Fire I can't see why TBH.
Report enjbenjy • September 23, 2010 9:18 PM BST
Makfi a cert. Particularly if it keeps raining.
Report Prima Donna • September 23, 2010 9:19 PM BST
I like H of F he ran a super race at Ascot, but my fear with him is his trainer, has he given the colt 100% attention? With all his personnel problems on the domestic front how can his mind be focused on the job so to speak,if he runs to his Ascot form he has a real chance.
Report ilikewavingatbuses • September 23, 2010 9:23 PM BST
i think rip will beat makfi but there are certainly a couple with chances, hearts looked like prob winning when stopped here last time and godolphin runner not out entirely!
Report ilikewavingatbuses • September 23, 2010 9:24 PM BST
rain will help rip too imo as he needs a stamina test!!!
Report Prima Donna • September 23, 2010 9:28 PM BST
Hearts of Fire won't mind cut at all,won his GR1 on the soft side of good.
Report Stotsfold • September 23, 2010 9:49 PM BST
Rip hard too hard a race last time to feature in this. Plus he's not as good this season. Do well to place imo
Report IrisDeBalme • September 23, 2010 10:18 PM BST
You have to remember that in August/Sept (from the top of my head)

You had the following horses losing in Group races

Star Spangled Banner (twice)
rip vAN Winkle
Goldikova
Paco Boy
Rewilding

and many more...

no such thing as a odds on cert nowadays...

I will add Makfi to the list!
Report Brodie • September 23, 2010 10:25 PM BST
Ascot is a weird track and Makfi has already underperformed on it.
Sore throat? Does it really affect a horse that much or is it yet another excuse
that connections like to blurt out?
How come these things aren't noticed before? Is it because it's a negligible conmplaint and doesn't become apparent? Beat Goldikova who gets the mile JUST on soft ground and won't do it again, imo.
Lay makfi at odds on, imo.
Report enjbenjy • September 23, 2010 11:53 PM BST
I retract my statement. Makfi is the best horse in the race but that last run at Ascot is enough to put me off backing it.
Report Win only - Sp only • September 24, 2010 12:12 AM BST
any chance of weighing me in benji?
Report MoscowExpress • September 24, 2010 2:10 AM BST
I hope I'm wrong but I think the race will come too soon for Rip Van Winkle, the QE II will be his 4th group one race in 8 weeks..but having said that i'll be cheering him on all the way
Report mythical prince • September 24, 2010 2:28 AM BST
i think makfi should be fine at ascot. don't really like rip van winkle anymore so for me the race should be between the french horse and the underrated poets voice.
Report sl72 • September 24, 2010 10:27 AM BST
Ground now good an good to soft in places with more rain on the way could things get any better for Makfi?

Also the doubts about the form with Goldikova? yes she didn't handle to ground as well as Makfi but she did enough to maintain the form from the Queen Anne with Paco Boy.

Makfi didn't just beat them that day he made look like a racecourse gallop.
Report unclepuncle • September 24, 2010 9:50 PM BST
With him being odds on here I just can't forgive Makfi his St James Palace run. Rip should go very close with Murtagh presumably riding him aggressively but I've thrown a few quid away on Bushman at 100/1+. Shouldn't be good enough but has had no chance over 10f laterly and the one time he ran over a stiff right handed 1m he bolted up at Sandown (admittedly only a handicap though).
Report Tavaris Jackson • September 24, 2010 10:10 PM BST
Even with the throat infection Makfi would have gotten to within a length or 2 of Canford Cliffs  had he not been completely stopped by Nobles Promise coming across him and Siyouni giving him nowhere to go.
Report neill d • September 24, 2010 11:56 PM BST
whats the ground like lads?, if its soft I'd be looking at Makfi with Poits Voice to follow him home, if it is quick, hopefully very quick I think Rip could build up a rythm in front and not be pegged back. I think Rip needs it very fast to win.
Report ReaseHeath • September 25, 2010 12:07 AM BST
GS (Soft in places on Round Course)officially but weather forecast is dry and sunny and it drains well these days, don't it - should be good ground at least by race time but who knows these days.
Report neill d • September 25, 2010 12:14 AM BST
Cheers mate I think I'll wait till around 2 to have my bet, though I've a feeling Rip will shorten the drier the ground gets
Report Stotsfold • September 25, 2010 8:15 AM BST
The ground isn't going to dry much, no quicker than g-s
Report the lay preacher • September 25, 2010 7:29 PM BST
according to the times the ground was no worse than good.
