This horse is declared for the Portland on Saturday and probably doesn't need too many horses to drop out to get a run. Horse is owned by the trainer's wife and has been kept in training in spite of some injury problems. I'm pretty sure I read on the racing post website that the horse's main aim is the Ayr gold cup but it would need to win this to be in with a squeak of getting in. I also remember reading the horse is ground dependent and it has to be on the soft side for him to run. Given that the weather forecast for the week is for a foot and half of rain to fall is this a good bet for Saturday? Is there a big draw bias for this race? I think this horse is well worth a big punt if the rain starts to come but don't want to find on race day he is drawn on the M18 with no chance.

I can't see a 4lbs pull being sufficient to beat Poets Place.

Both Harry Patch and Poet's Place are unexposed sprinters you want to keep on the right side of particularly on soft ground. I will be backing both in Saturday's race if they turn up.

Harry Patch is only rated 92 and would need to win at Doncaster to pick up a 4lb penalty to have any chance of running in the Ayr Gold Cup the following weekend. The 5 and a half furlongs distance of the Portland may also suit him better than Poet's Place, although I happen to think Poet will win at Ayr next week granted soft ground.

Harry Patch not running on Saturday due to setback as reported in the RP.

"HARRY PATCH, the 6-1 joint favourite with the sponsors for Saturday's Ladbrokes Portland Handicap, is out the race after suffering a setback and also looks likely to miss the William Hill Ayr Gold Cup at Ayr on September 18".
