. cant help but think all the hype surrounding canford and steinbeck has deflected attention away from this excellent french animal. steinbeck has produced absolutely nothing to back up his high home reputation. I couldn't agree more mp,Funny isn't it how quick some on here maintain Steinbeck has shown 'so much' potential, they would have us believe that his connections run him GR1 races just to get experience talk about hype some of them are SNA biggest critics. What I can't get is SNA's run in the GNS confirmed to them that he was a dog,yet somehow Steinbecks defeats every run show them so much, always for the 'next run'tomorrow will confirm that they too get sucked in on hype. |
By:
Makfi would be a lot shorter if his connections were more fashionable. Be a surprise if Steinbeck is even placed.

Quality race tomorrow but I'll be putting my faith in Steinbeck who will relish the gallop set by Encompassing; he'll be sat firmly on his shoulder. I've given my observations many times on his performances and how much promise they showed so won't go over it again but I'm looking forward to tomorrow.
Might have a saver on the American horse depending on how much the rain has affected the ground tonight. Hopefully you'll see what me, Kirk and others have said all Winter ;) |

By:
Pretty sure Makfi will be shorter if the grounds riding good or good to soft, as he beat CC fairly comfortably on gd-fm and I'd expect he'll improve for the softer ground. Though obviously the way CC pulled in the Guineas he should improve if he settles like he did in the Irish.
The one I think has come in most under the radar though is Dick Turpin and not sure how he's bigger than Steinbeck, beat CC both times ran a good race in France which couldn't have been franked any better by the French Derby though can't see how he'll reverse the form with Makfi. Just a fantastic race to look forward to along with the first |

By:
I'm sticking to Siyouni at 16 & 8s. I expect him to run a good race, but it's a really hot contest and it's right up for grabs for a whole bunch of them you'd imagine.

Personally hope Steinbeck gets stuffed, tailed off last. Have never understood the love affair people have had with this fragile animal. On what he has achieved, his price is all wrong.
For what its worth think Makfi is the likely winner. However think Beethoven is an absolutely massive price. 99/1 for a Group 1 winner (however unfashionable) is an insult in my opinion. Ok jockey bookings dont fill you with confidence but he surely isnt going solely for pacemaking duties and I think he may have a squeek if reproducing something like his Dewhurst form. |
By:
Steinbeck has actually beaten DT in the Dewhurst it's worth pointing out. Makfi is best on quick ground, that's why his trial run impressed me so much
By:
Haha i was just about to put surely Beethoven can't be a 100-1 shot. Wonder if the dewhurst winner has ever been that price on its first appearance as a 3 yr old.
Don't even know if I'll have a bet in the race as not sure I can get an angle on it. Though i would be slightly dissapointed if either CC or Makfi didn't win it as I think one of them could emerge as a true champion. |
By:
Beethoven e/w looks worth a little. Wouldn't worry about jockey bookings that doesn't seem to mean much with Ballydoyle.
By:
logikal - I couldnt believe his price either.
I really did fancy him, at the prices, for the 2000 Guineas. There are plenty of negatives but im sorry his price is all wrong at the moment I dont care what anyone says. |
By:
Willy Turpin is a crazy price at 8s. He's ran two massive races, so god knows why he's a bigger price than Steinbeck and Siyouni for that matter. The run in will suit him as well.
By:
ben how do you work out Makfi is best on quick ground other than he's put up his best performance on it, are you talking about his action? Being by Dubawi I'd think he'd like ground with slightly more cut.
Also if you're going by Dewhurst form then Beethoven beat Steinbeck, a few horses beat DT as a 2 year old but he has definetly improved and I doubt they could beat him now. |
By:
tbh i remember a jim bolger horse being a big price for this same race, after winning a dewhurst in a bunch finish two or three years ago- intense focus. that got stuffed.
tbh this game is all about opinions. i keep changing my mind, which is rare for me [smiley:crazy] although i think that it should come down to the big two, how many times in these sort of races has there been a big upset? maybe fallon can slip the field on this noble promise. i mean if canford cliffs switches off and travels like he did last time he's going to take some beating, as graeme rodway pointed out in the racing post preview he's exactly what you look for in a high class miler. on the other hand you have this makfi, who could still be anything. a fascinating clash. |
By:
Possibly controversial but DT has failed to show he truly stays a mile against the very best imo, his run has flattened out just as he looks like he's going to take it last two times, think he's best at 7f.
By:
Everyone always talk about Dubawi's liking cut because he did but I've yet to see evidence of that. Makfi is out of a Green Desert mare as well which influences him.
By:
Actually the above's probably rubbish about DT, disregard it imo, do think he's class horse.
By:
ben10 is spot on about Makfi being better on fast ground, mainly due to the fact he is out of a mare by Green Desert. Nearly all of Green Desert progeny prefer fast ground, that's why I backed him in the 2000 Guineas and will back him again tomorrow. Winning on soft ground in France proved he is top class and he has done it all with little fuss!!!
By:
I'm hoping we see the real Siyouni tomorrow, granted a bit of luck for once. His form at Longchamp last October is top-class and you can pretty much forget his two runs this term.
Having said that, I plan to lay a bit off my earlier bet and use that to make Makfi a winner too as he impressed me at Newmarket winning easily to my eyes. He should be favourite in my view above CC. I'm also interested in this Yank hoss at 25/1 but want to see how he looks and acts before punting it. Should be an absolute crackerjack of a race and can't wait. |

C'mon here now Steinbeck!

Mythical Prince in "change of mind" shocker - has this ever happened before???!!!

By:
fft
![]() tbh i will feel sick if steinbeck wins and he goes unbacked by me, more details later |
By:
Despite the merchant of doom (and mind changing) going for Makfi, I shall stick with this fine animal to triumph today.
The usual xenophobia/myopia/APOB followship will ensure a super price (again). |
By:
The ground may be a bigger factor today than you think! I'll decide after watching the Queen Anne. BUT at the moment swaying with the french horse against Canford
By:
SJ will be top price in the industry for Makfi from 11am
By:
wtf was that? [:o]
By:
horrible. i actually backed canford and makfi (actually i backed the whole field ) so wasnt too disapointed
but he obviously didnt travelshocking aftertiming by me |
By:
Hopefully the Steinbeck bubble will have finally burst!!
By:
Would have won if it had been held up[;)]
By:
On first viewing I thought he was completely stopped by Noble's Promise. Not so sure now. Maybe it was just a stinker he ran.
By:
"Would have won if it had been held upWink"
Forgot that little excuse :) |
By:
oh its such a piece of crap shark
i know this is horrible aftertiming by me, i was actually tempted to have a small saver on it today, backed canford, steinbeck and makfi so effectively was laying the rest, but why oh why do we get sucked into this slow horse i'll never know. even his naas win was laboured in hindsight. last time i ever listen to the ballydoyle hype. |
By:
"On first viewing I thought he was completely stopped by Noble's Promise. Not so sure now. Maybe it was just a stinker he ran."
He was beaten when Noble's Promise went past him. |

Dont worry MP, lots of people will have forgotten these dragons by November and will be fawning over the latest St Nicholas Abbey and Steinbeck!
