Judging by the shortening up of this colt's price in the last few days I'm clearly not alone in thinking this horse might turn out to be the main danger to St Nicholas Abbey in June. He was certainly impressive when winning his maiden at Goodwood and the vibes from Newmarket are that he is working very well ahead of his next run, probably in the Sandown Classic Trial on Friday. I know winners of this trial don't win the Derby, but it looks like he is Stoute's Derby hope for this year having recently supplemented him to run. A win on Friday and he will be clear second favourite. Any views?

Agree. I just don't think he can stay 12f.
Report Steamship • April 20, 2010 10:42 PM BST
I backed him at 20-1 for Guineas and his price shortened to 10-1 and he was withdrawn to go for the Derby. If you feel you missed the price then don't touch it.

Sacred Kingdom,

Have you even looked at the horses pedigree it just screams stamina to me, his damn being a sister to a St Leger winner. I don't understand your logic here sorry and i don't think Sir Micheal does either.

There were three reasons why I've backed him at 16/1 - he appears very likely to stay 12f on breeding, the fact that he has been supplemented for the Derby and is clearly Stoute's main hope for the race, and the fact that a win on Friday would lead to a further reduction in his odds. I happen to think St Nicholas Abbey will win the Derby, but at a current price of 2/1 he's plenty short enough at this stage.

Not now running on Friday, looks like we may have to wait until the Dante to see him run again.

Could he go for the French Derby?
Report Chris B • April 22, 2010 10:26 AM BST
That's my worry to be honest, I've heard he is a fragile horse and he may well have been taken out of the Sandown race because they don't want to risk him on fast ground. It may be they would reroute him to the French Derby if the ground is similarly fast at Epsom.

WORKFORCE'S participation in the Investec Derby will be decided after a racecourse gallop at Lingfield next week, connections have revealed.

The Sir Michael Stoute-trained colt finished second behind Cape Blanco on his eagerly anticipated seasonal reappearance in the Totesport Dante Stakes at York this month and is as short as 8-1 for the June 5 Classic.

However, his owner Khalid Abdullah also hasLingfield Derby Trial winner Bullet Train engaged in the Derby and connections will see what happens in the gallop before deciding whether they are to be double-handed in the Classic.

Both colts were left in the Derby at Thursday's forfeit stage, and Abdullah's racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe said: "Workforce came out of the Dante very well so that encouraged us to continue with the Derby in mind.

"He will have a racecourse gallop at Lingfield next week and the Prince will decide then."

Personally think they will keep him for Ascot, but if he takes his chance he will run a big race. The more I watch the Dante the better I think he ran, considering the ground and the bit slipping. The extra two furlongs will suit him as well.

Racecourse gallop
a masterstroke from a master trainer imo. The horse needs experience & this should help
would have a solid chance if he come through that

Any idea when this racecourse gallop is scheduled for?

Stake... From this morning on RP

WORKFORCE looks set to take his place in the Investec Derby line-up after pleasing Sir Michael Stoute and Ryan Moore in an educational workout over about a mile with two stablemates on Lingfield's polytrack surface on Wednesday morning.

Best-priced 14-1 forthe Derby, Workforce's reputation was built on an impressive six-length Maiden win at Goodwood last year and whispers from the Newmarket gallops.

A credible effort when second on his seasonal reappearance in the Dante Stakes at York, won by Cape Blanco, saw him drift slightly fo Epsom with some questioning whether he would run.

The Khalid Abdullah-owned three-year-old looks set to join Bullet Train, also owned by Abdullah, in the Derby at Epsom next Saturday.

Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager to Prince Khalid Abdullah, said hewould talk to the owner before confiming the colt for the Derby, but expects Workforce to run on June 5.

Guineas form looks the strongest to me. Lumping on St Nick as I think he is crying out for further and always would have needed it at 3.

someone keen to lay st nick at the moment

Can anyone point me at any serious 12f form in this horses pedigree ? Love him - hes very game - but cant have him for the Derby after he hung and had bit problems at York.

lordnoise it would hang when it hated the fast ground .

Lordnoise,

3rd foal, half-brother to 2m hurdle winner Extreme Impact, and to a 7f winner in Greece; dam unraced sister to Racing Post Trophy & St Leger winner Brian Boru & half-sister to French 12.5f Group 2 winner Moon Search, out of Park Hill winner Eva Luna

Also, Workforce's sire shares his dam with Urban Sea, who hopefully won't need any introduction as a 12f influence.  in fact, I have no idea what Grimthorpe was on about in the spring.  The pedigree is stuffed with 12f horses.

Looks a slow old boat on paper doesn't he.

Certainly not a miler!
Report ben10 • May 27, 2010 2:30 PM BST
Kings Best isn't an influence for 12f horses though is he, regardless of his relation to Urban Sea. Workforce seemed quick enough to run 7f last year too against what was a decent field on a sharp track.

Kings Best isn't an influence for 12f horses though is he,

That may be true, but most of his stock seem on the big side and want a bit of time,as Teddy Grimthorpe said the other day Workforce is a bit weak at the moment and he too looks to have plenty of size, imo he may be a good horse but one which would be better later on or even next year.
Report trev w • May 27, 2010 2:54 PM BST
stoute must be very happy with the horse atm...considering connections already have a runner in bullet...
Report lordnoise • May 27, 2010 4:28 PM BST
I take your point concerning his dams breeding HM but when you look at Kings Best and dams by Sadlers Wells they produce good 10f horses but not 12f - Creachadoir, Best Alibi, Runaway. Not convinced ...
As for Workforce hanging on fast ground. I'm doubtful if the going at Epsom will be that different and there aint exactly a lot of rising ground at the business end of the race to help.
Report The Headmaster • May 27, 2010 4:49 PM BST
Hanging down to tack problems surely?  And the ground will be a lot different to York anyway.
