SONNY RED
Never won over 6f, but ran with credit (slightly hampered) on seasonal debut in better race than this. These quick conditions probably not to his liking but no forlorn hope from decent draw with Fallon booked.

MARINE BOY
Highly talented at two. Things didn't go his way last year, but showed a return to form final couple of starts. Fast ground/6f probably going to be his thing and interesting here from good draw in weaker race than he is used to.

CASTLES IN THE AIR
Is 12lbs higher here than for last success and usually takes a run to blow the cobwebs away. But trainer/jockey remain in good form and another drawn well; so not completely out of the picture.

THEBES
Managed second in this last year off just 3lbs lower and should relish the return to fast ground. Interesting to see Frankie booked and, as another coming from a handy draw, he could dominate and put up a bold show.

COURAGEOUS
Very smart two-year-old but has disappointed since. Dropping down the weights now as a result but little encouragement can be taken at present. Others with better chances.

BALDEMAR
Remains 4lbs higher than latest win and is somewhat of an in and out performer. Decent start to the season however, but remains to be seen if this kind of test plays to his strengths.

HOTHAM
Course specialist (Out of frame just once in eight runs). Started the season well in better race at Doncaster and no reason why bold show shouldn't be made having landed the plum draw.

INTERNATIONALDEBUT
Scraped home off this mark last May at York to land valuable 5f event, but no win since. Has started the season in fine fettle but draw hasn't been kind and still unsure what exactly his best trip is.

FLOWING CAPE
No wins on turf speaks for itself and ground might have come up a shade too quick for him here. Long way behind Thebes latest and would need career best to win today.

HAMOODY
Another who was highly talented at two but lost his way since. Both wins under fast ground/6f conditions though and interesting first run here since being gelded for 'sprint king' Dandy with Adrian on board.

GO GO GREEN
Another course specialist (Three wins from three) and closely matched with Hotham on a couple of runs last year. Needs to show he can step up to this better company; but dangerous if he can.

KINGS WONDER
More of a 7f horse and bolted up over that distance at Goodwood on seasonal debut last year. Only 2lbs higher here today, so claimer will help further and another to watch for on debut for Dandy Nicholls.

DAMIKA
Had to endure a tough two years as a result of a successful 2007; but dropped nicely down the weights now. Showed promise end of last season and has recorded good efforts at sharp left handed tracks (Chester, Lingfield, Pontefract) before.

BEL CANTOR
Three wins here and decent when on song. Fair start to the season but likley to struggle against some classy opponents from widest draw of all.

DICKIE LE DAVOIR
Successful here last July off 1lb higher. But running 17lbs out of the handicap today. Likely to be out of his depth against these speedy types and other days more appropriate for him.

SUMMARY

Another highly competitive sprint. There should be a furious pace on here as there at least four who like to bowl along and that could play into the hands of the vastly improving Hotham (6/1). Has just one bad run to his name in last seven races (down the field in Bronze Cup when hampered and drawn on wrong side) and his record around here is impressive; he has returned in fine fettle this year finishing fifth in tough sprint at Doncaster. This ground should be more up his street today than there and a late charge for the line from the inside rail draw looks likely. There are plenty of others that deserve respect, including two who had bags of ability as two-year-olds in the shape of Marine Boy and Hamoody. But one at a bigger price who could run well is Damika (14/1). He has shown his liking for this type of track in the past and is now on the sort of mark he can get involved off in these events. The ground might be plenty quick enough here but, like Hotham, he is another who should be swooping late from the back off a strong pace.

SELECTIONS

Hotham 2pts win @ 6/1
Damika 1pt ew @ 14/1

Cheers Nib. It's been an unlucky start to the season for me so far, so I'm hoping there's a change of fortune in this one tomorrow :)

VK, shame you have to work, best prices this morning.
Hotham 13-2 B.O.G. 7-1 biggest but don't know if it's guaranteed.
Damika 16-1 B.O.G. and that's biggest.
I like Hotham too, seems to have everything in his favour.

Top stuff VK.
Based on your hard work, and a little bit of form reading I've had two small win bets on Marine Boy & Go Go Green.
Report ben10 April 19, 2010 10:28 AM BST
Good work VK, I have it between Internationaldebut and Hamoody myself. The latter is worth a chance on getting back to form and you could argue his run 2 starts ago puts him well in anyway. Intenationaldebut is a funny horse but I feel 6 is his trip and he can run a big race today, don't like the jockey though and will probably know my fate pre-race :p

Will watch Kings Wonder with interest, I expect him to go from the front but probably wants a better draw than today so could be one to look out for down the line.

very bullish on kings wonder meself. scooted in fto last season. claimer is very decent imv and 28's looks solid but draw may be a problem considering his running style. damika also interests but never seems ready fto ?:|

Unexpected rain
Clerk of the course Norman Gundill admits that the morning downpours have caught him unawares.
"We were forecast 2mm of rain overnight and another 2mm in the morning but we have had 10mm so far this morning I said.
"It is good, good to soft in places - it is softer on the bends and down the back."

Well played to everyone that had the winner!

Can't believe that the going changed so drastically from last night and Damika was chopped off several times when trying to make a run.

My bad luck continues :(

But the breaks will come soon.

COURAGEOUS looks a likely winner next time out don't you think Value King?
Report Value King April 19, 2010 7:11 PM BST
Courageous ran well and could easily pick up a similar event off the mark he is on now, as he was an excellent two year old.
Report SOULDANCER April 19, 2010 7:54 PM BST
Well done FFT and Gunner,
Thought Kings Wonder run well considering the draw and maybe prefer firmer. Looked at him because of jockey booking but draw put me off. That's the 3rd time Cray has ridden for Nicholls, 2 seconds before. Wonder if he will be worth keeping an eye on for Nicholls, who used Ajtebi's claim to some effect last 2 years.
