Ta mmg. If you live locally keep the updates coming over the next couple of weeks. Rains obviously important but sunny and or windy drying days are good to know about too.

Noticed that. 5 days are usually pretty good nowadays but anything over and your in Michael Fish land. Still it may make a difference to Notre Peres connections.

By Jon Lees 7:44AM 28 MAR 2010 AINTREE officials are in discussions with local transport chiefs to produce a contingency plan to avert widespread travel disruption during the John Smith's Grand National meeting in the event of a national rail strike.
The RMT rail union has called a four-day strike next month, the last two days of which coincide with the first two of the Grand National fixture, which includes the popular ladies' day. Heavy traffic congestion is likely if the strike is not averted.
No services are expected to run from London to Liverpool, and locally it will hit Merseyrail services running from central Liverpool to the station outside Aintree racecourse.
A notice on the Aintree website states: "We'd like to reassure any racegoers who plan to travel by train to Aintree for the first two days of the John Smith's Grand National Meeting (April 8-9) that we are currently working with local transport providers to plan replacement local services if a National Rail Strike does go ahead - however, please keep checking back to this page for updates and the latest information."
The racecourse's PR manager Emma Owen said: "Since we got notification of the strike at the end of last week, we've been in touch with Mersey Travel to take care of arrangements locally. I know a contingency plan is being worked on to make sure there is as little disruption as possible, but nationally it may cause problems."

Looks really wet all week, including Friday. Could be heavy by the end of the week and even with a dry spell its hard to see it being good. Bit more rain during next weekend and early next week and it will definitely be a test. Time to back the mudlarks.

Just done a 10 day weather forecast and it indicates that whilst the next 7 days will be wet, we could get a dry spell just before the racing kicks off. Let's hope so - the last thing racing needs is a repeat of the Red Marauder farce of 2001.

benjy - I don't reckon that pause in the rain lasted very long. I was in north Liverpool this morning and it rained from 06.30, in central Liverpool from 8 till 6 and it didn't stop, then back in north Liverpool from about 7 pm. The rain stopped about 9 pm but the ground (albeit local park common land) is absolutely sodden.

AINTREE clerk of the course Andrew Tulloch is predicting "lovely jumping ground" for the three-day John Smith's Grand National meeting, which begins on Thursday week.
His confidence comes despite forecasters expecting the Merseyside area to see plenty of rain before the action starts.

A Met Office spokeswoman said: "The early signs for Aintree are for the weather to remain changeable, but perhaps not quite as wet as we have had over recent days.
"There will be some showers, but I think we will be looking at good sunny spells between the showers.
"Temperatures will be near or perhaps a little above average, but there is quite a lot of rain to come."
Tulloch admitted the severe winter had hampered grass growth, but he was otherwise upbeat before going out for his daily check on underfoot conditions on Monday afternoon.
"I think we could get quite a lot of rain this week and we will be keeping an eye on things, but the structure of the soil makes it free-draining," he said.
"If we had three or four dry days it would go through quite quickly.
"The National course is a mixture of soft and good to soft, and the Mildmay and hurdle courses are mostly good to soft.

"It is lovely jumping ground. I'm very grateful we saved the inside ground on the National course and didn't race on it at the Becher meeting, because that's fresh ground from last April"

Talking up prospects to boost entries imo. Grand National course doesn't dry up nearly as fast as the Mildmay and it must be odds on soft or heavy now. Was given as soft g/s places yesterday so probably bordering on heavy by now and hardly a forecast that makes you think it's going to dry out much.

Chucked down all day yesterday and today has started no different. This will be soft ground. Its going to be a mudbath after 2 days of racing beforehand.

There's plenty of rain forecast between now and the middle of next week. I would hazard a guess at soft/ soft heavy/ heavy. Would be great if we had genuine heavy ground for a change. Nice soft landings for all the horses and hopefully no fatalities. :)

AS much as 12mm of rain is forecast to fall on Aintree's Grand National course on Monday, according to the Met Office.
However, the weather is expected to take a turn for the better in the second half of next week in the countdown to the John Smith's-sponsored race on April 10.
A Met Office spokesman said: "Whatever ground conditions at Aintree are like now they are likely to be even softer by the end of Monday after another 12 mm or more of rain. But from midweek onwards things will improve." Andrew Tulloch, director of racing and clerk of the course at Aintree, told racingpost.com on Thursday: "I walked the courses this morning, and it's soft on the National course, but heavy alongside the canal side and on odds bits coming up to The Chair."
On the Mildmay and hurdle course the ground was on Thursday described as soft, good to soft in places.

12mm on top of soft ground with heavy patches = saturated ground.
Will be soft regardless of drying conditions on Tues/Weds - then its cut up on Thurs/Fri.

Its Tuesday instead. My guess would be gd/sft soft places for Saturday. Must be heavy now and will be heavy on Tuesday night then will dry slowly with very average temperatures.

Ground conditions on the National course were on Saturday posted as soft, heavy in places by clerk of the course Andrew Tulloch, who said: "It looks like we will be on the easier side of good, but how easy depends on how much rain we get between now and Wednesday, during which time we are due showers and patchy rain, and also on how warm it gets on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, when it is forecast to be dry."
Could be no worse than good to soft by Saturday if minimal rain and warmer temps towards the end of the week.
