..and by that I do not mean current, but I have read views on Towcester since its opening and now also with Dunstall Park.

What makes the perfect track for you?

Traps style?
Distance?
Bend configuration?
Length of the straights?
Track width....amongst no doubt many other imponderables.

I read a comment earlier re Dunstall Park which to my untrained eye looks new, fair and open yet it has received poor feedback.

Describe your perfect track and what is needed to make it perfect.

The tracks I always thought were best were Nottingham and Hove but I am sure many may disagree. I attended Wimbledon for most of my younger years and wouldn't have said that was perfect in any way shape or form but it was still loved by most.

Would be interesting if you could design your own and how that would match up to others.

Thanks MM.....But if so many tracks are so bad, and you could design your own...What would the design be is more my question.

I'd love the regulars on here to give a description.

You have free rain on design from top to bottom.

That did make me smile by the way Wink

Very difficult question.  Greyhounds run up to two seconds faster now than those of a century ago, when initial tracks were designed.  Any reduction of risk at the first bend would be very welcome but how you do it I don’t know.

Been betting greyhounds for 40 yrs nottingham 35 yrs ago was a great track and atmosphere but unfortunately went last week ist time for a long time i know was mid week (thursday)but was 6 people there shocking but sign of the times im affraid so thought go monday evening was a few opens thought be better was 1 bookie absolute p'ss take on overround id say nearly criminal in total counted 18 people there how times have changed used to be solid down there r i p greyhounds

LH and mm.....agreed on all points.

We are missing the point however.

I read loads about "the place is a dump"......."the track is not fit for purpose"....."the traps are a joke"......"insides never get a run"....etc

What I am asking is If any punter on here could design a track, what would its numbers and requirements be?

Forget the Overround. Forget the Tote. Forget the restaurant. Forget the price of a pint.

DEFINE HOW YOU WOULD LIKE THE RUNNING SURFACE, TRAPS, DISTANCE and all of the other imponderables to be.

With the greatest respect to Fattie the comment that caught my eye was that Dunstall Park was "two bob"....

What I would like to know is what could make it better? What would you design etc.

unfortunately hn  back to my ist post just like millers field fair track no track bookies no rip off prices on beer food etc comes to something when rather punt on cartoon racing sorry state I'm afraid but there's only 1 way this great sport is going and its same way as the great country is mate down the sh@t creek with no paddle ;#(

I don't disagree one iota mm.....a crying shame

I’ll have a go. First part is getting the run to first bend correct, not too short so they don’t hit the bend together but crucially not too far either so they aren’t hitting top speed before the bend, don’t know what that distance would be. The banking needs to be more than current tracks seem to have, this is to enable dogs to run without checking stride, if this is done well then bends don’t have to be overly wide. A long back straight to enable the good dogs to use their pace, what better sight than a dog powering down the far side.
The run in shouldn’t be too long, as if the track configuration and banking is good, the dogs should be giving their all, no need to overdo it. To add to it don’t have the hare chuck off all the way down the back straight for the same reason, pull them up quicker with a curtain if possible.

Don’t know about distances but cleverer people than me could work it out.
Cheers

hove 515 proper trip GC
I've never liked the up & over boxes they have there now
Report FATTIEWHITEYSLOVEADRINK October 31, 2025 10:12 AM GMT
Wimbo 480 was fine

509 Swindon was fine  liked that trip

Back box’s at sitters was fine  should had detby from them lids

New track run to corner is rubbish
500 trip hove is dog **** rubbish

Punting wise
I miss Crayford opens
I miss Sheffield Tuesday night opens
Notts Monday is take it or leave it
Monmore 480 is probably best distance for derby
Unless new track sort out run to corner

Towcester never been any good
Notts derby only problem is **** if get red or stripes imo

Donny 480 never devoted any proper opens there

Coventry Sunday nights where good
Henlow Sunday nights I liked early days rpgtv
Report wondersobright October 31, 2025 11:50 AM GMT
stainy from the back boxes & 6 bend trip is a proper track
problem is its diet of sprints or 450s bookies fodder

I would agree monmore 480 is prob best derby option
Report garryc October 31, 2025 12:57 PM GMT
i loved wimbledon but probably because i couldnt do wrong there but for a real trip coventry and old hove 515 for sure,
Report sugarfoot October 31, 2025 3:12 PM GMT
Straight track like they have in Australia. A little bit wider than Healesville, but not nearly as wide as the Q-straight.  I thought they could have done something like that at Towcester given the space.  Every retired greyhound I have "owned" has had varying degrees of stiffness in the rear right leg from the work done navigating each bend

Longford (gone) and Henlow were good tracks for schooling pups to avoid injury, Savva used henlow, they were quite similar in dimensions and shape.
Best track for atmosphere Shawfield (gone) or Shelbourne.

Shawfield was a decent running track Malay  , was deinately a lively atmosphere the night I went ,when spy won the derby .Location wasnt bad could jump a cab for a few quid from Glasgow

Current running track Central park , I hear big things are in the Pipeline , will they bid for the Derby in years to Come  , 6000 Capacity , I didnt know that

Would be a brilliant track for the Derby if thay can upgrade facilities ,People were Going on about location  , dont think that would be an Issue
