I don't follow greyhounds particularly, but I always remember there being lots of buzz about Westmead Hawk back in the day. I have just re-watched the 2005 and 2006 derby finals, the crowds were packed and buzzing.
who would you say was the Frankel of greyhound racing?
(in other news when I used to go to the bookies with a mate around the same time (2000s), his greyhound system was to back any greyhound with Droopy's in it's name, as he said 'They always win')
Westmead Hawk was superb agreed. Ballyregan Bob was a clever tracker but for sheer disbelief nothing comes close to Scurlogue Champ and probably never will

I had never heard of Scurlogue Champ, just watched a few youtube vids. the last half a lap he would be passing them like they were standing still. Visually a joy to watch!

such a question is virtually impossible to answer.....there are superstars over the years covering every distance and style but for the old tracks now forgotten there would have been some fantastic greyhounds running on various tracks make-ups....grass...peat...sand...part and part....so for the sport it is better that we have a spread of memories and watch videos of all those we can.......

Very hard to answer but my two against the field are: Ballyregan Bob and Ballinderry Moth.
Most will know the former but possibly only the older posters will recall Ballinderry Moth - a great bitch out of Walthamstow who won loads of stuff in the mid 1970's.
As a very raw 16 year old I had my week's wages on her for the final of the Oaks at Harringey in November 1976. Only 8/11 (I think) but she was away and gone....OI OI!

21 I think nanny. Both Mustard and Lively Band were owned by the same man, coincidentally, a Scottish banker called Cyril Young, known on the programmes/racecards as Cyril Scotland. Very well known for his sporting support, football being high amongst his hobbies. Lively Band won the Edinburgh Cup which was always run in August, so presumably he retrialled and requalied to race. Phenomenal pace the dog had. He took out, as you say, probably the greatest dog never to win a Derby, Shamrock Point ( I rated him higher than Myrtown, sry ) and the dopey, grovelling officials in charge then promoted the Duke of Edinburgh’s dog, Camira Flash from 4th to 3rd and thus into the final, which of course the dog won. The crowd - and they were huge in these day,s (as you already know )were not at all reticent in demonstrating, very loudly, their displeasure post-race. The following year Shamrock Point missed out again from a final spot, by the narrowest of margins, and again won the Consolation Final, again in a faster time than the winning finalist. I well remember Ger McKenna leading the dog across and, as he did, the crowd spontaneously gave him and the dog huge vocal support and applause out of pure sentiment and appreciation. It was a memorable sound and sight.

Mine was What’s Up Boys in the National. I got inspiration for him on the Friday and got on. Bet him again on the Saturday morning as the huge punt took off. Had never before seen a horse come to lead the race over the last then get passed again, on the run in, by the horse he’d just passed. They heard me all over the street as I triumphantly shouted him on. Then the brutal reality suggested itself and actually happened. Bindaree! And worse, one of my fav. Jocks Culloty!

As a 46 near 47 year old the Dog that springs to mind has to be Westmead Hawk, if only for it's style of winning.
I don't doubt there may have been faster dogs but I've only been left mouth open mouthed and completely speechless once.....and that was The Hawk

I still remember the Wimblecrowd bursting into “easy. easy” when he won his second Derby. Amazing. What must it be like to realise that you have a pup who’s shown you his absolute brilliance before you even trial him officially. Must be a special feeling.

@horationelson...no it was not me who backed a golfer at 1.01!! Not my game that.
In the early days of Betfair I used to lay 1.03 for five ort six horses in big fields sprints hoping to be matched on at least two of them! Worked for a while but then, as with all on here, many others started the same thing. But no, never backed at 1.01 in anything.

Re-reading this thread....surely there is no dispute that Scur. Champ was the most eye catching runner of all time?
I truly believe he was taking the p*ss sometimes!
Miles behind and then roared through - and then one night, cannot recall where, a huge crowd turned up to see him and he bolted out of the traps and led all the way!!!

Yes, against Ballyregan Bob (and was it two others, or just a match?) at Wembley in a 12k to the winner one-off race sponsored by John Power.
Scu. Champ was surely close to human! Saw BB fly off that night and though 'S*d this, no chance of catching him so what's the point!!!'
BTW. I think it was at Oxford when SC flew out of the boxes to lead all the way...

The question of GOAT is, obviously, subjective and everyone will have their personal opinions. Bob was unbeatable over a ‘proper’ six bends - nothing rarely, if ever, got even close to him over that trip. However, I was at Walthamstow when he ran down Ballintubber One over 475m. I honestly believe that he could’ve won a Derby, Leger AND TV Trophy. He was the most majestic greyhound in full flow and I feel privileged to have been a regular race goer when he and Scurlogue were around. Whilst I fully appreciate ‘The Champ’s’ enigmatic running style understandably drew the crowds (and I too followed him), he wasn’t, in my humble opinion in the same league as Ballyregan Bob - who was as close as I’ve ever seen to the perfect racing greyhound.

I agree and it was only the closure of White City which convinced conns. not to run him at Wimbledon, who took it over They considered the track unsuitable for him apparently.

It's the impossible question that cannot be answered in my opinion
The "best ever" question is almost impossible to answer.Across any sport, across any era it is impossible to have a concrete answer because there are always far too many imponderables.Pele? Maradonna? Ronaldo? Messi?Federer? Nadal? Djokovic?Woods? Ni
Mick the Miller's stuffed body used to be on display at the Natural Histoery Museum in Kensington, but then he was moved to their smaller premises at Tring in Hertfordshire. Hopefully he is still there but a search of their Tring site shows no results. I fear 'wokeness' may have led to him being removed from public display.
Aladdin, yes, I, too, was at Wal'stow when BR beat Ballintubber One over the 475m. A video of that race is on YouTube.
BR was the most majestic greyhound I have ever seen and the way he powered past the very fast B'Tubber One at the Stow that night was awe inspiring. Second until just after the last bend, he then lengthens into full stride and the deal was done.
Lastly, just been reading a book about the sporting summer in England of 1934. An Englishman won Wimbledon (Fred Perry) and also the Open Golf (Henry Cotton). The book also looks at how England played against the Aussies at cricket that summer. But what amazed me was just how prolific Don Bradman was as a batsman. His figures and performance defied belief and, to my mind, puts him top of any list of batsman.

Another Great Bitch
Dolores Rocket won the Spring Cup over 700 yards at Wimbledon Stadium, set a track record at Crayford & Bexleyheath Stadium before victory in the Wembley Spring Cup.[3] After seasonal rest she headed for the 1971 English Greyhound Derby and won the competition and became the first bitch to win the Derby since 1949.
After the Derby she broke the track record at Romford Greyhound Stadium when winning the Essex Vase on 6 July and broke the 700 yard track record at Wimbledon on 26 July. Later in 1971 she also won the St Leger at Wembley and reached the Cesarewitch final at West Ham Stadium. She earned £15,044 in career prize money which constituted a new record.
