Yes similar here L.H. I used to take time off work just to go and see the trials in the morning let alone getting psyched up watching an actual race!
We all, to a man, have those golden memories. There was a piece on Twitter recently and someone posted a photo of the lit up entrance to Walthamstow when the track was in its absolute pomp. I thought wow, I vividly remember queueing up outside there at 18.00 to get a plot for the night. It was always worth the effort for sure.

slippy your namesake brought me to tears when it beat Druids Johno to the bend, I bet Johno from the start, 1/3 in the final, I was distraught for weeks, a long journey home on the sunday. am I right in thinking Slippy couuld'nt even qualify in a 4 dog heat the year before, how it trapped like that in the final i'll never know. cheers.

It was an amazing night, I get goosebumps ever time I watch it, such as just now!
It's well documented that S.B. on the night was punted from 16/1 down to 8/1/. I was plotted up on the terraces in front of Tony Morris's pitch, as I always was @ Wimbledon. He got filled in non stop in the build up. Druids Johno was shaking in the preliminaries, you could visibly see that. On the other hand, Paul Young was handling Slippy Blue who was calm as you like, as you would have expected from a very experienced competition dog.

So when Fair Hill Boy led and somehow S.B. followed him around well, the shout went up and as loud as I've ever heard at any race meeting before as we all knew what was going to happen.
It was a memory that will stay with me forever most definitely.

I was going to Bet Druids I missed 16s and Left it was not a Happy Chappy , Strangely I bet  Slippy at 25s EW for an interest 1/4 finals stage

Getting druids beat and Slippy to win was some result

I remember back in the early days of the greyhound forum, a regular poster called "Canny Man" was offered Slippy Blue for £6K after winning an A5 graded @ Brough Park. He said he was tempted but it was just a bit more than his budget could stretch to.
S.B. returned to the track in the same year ,1989, and went on to win the £5,000 All England Cup for trainer Kenny Linzell.

Loyal Honcho was my big punting winner.  I remember saying how much he had impressed me in his second round and several people thought I was nuts!    Seamus Graham - what a man and trainer!  A top midlands trainer saying how Seamus had told him the golden rule about winning finals - if they;re right leave them alone.  The biggest sin is to do too much and put them over.  He couldn;t understand it at the time but came to!
I vaguely remember getting into a bookie;s in Newcastle and getting more on Some Picture. Bright sunny night as I recall?  Football weekend away.  I bought a whole load of drink for the boys that night - at least so I am told. 
And Tartan Khan is just a legend for me and a very young mate.

Was actually Graded at the City at one Stage Wedge Ran a couple of races  , Cracking dog he turned out

Yah.  The were advised to take him away by the RM - who was a legend at the time - can't remember his name, who reckoned he would never be good enough to grade in.  He did the same as Astute Missile - never won a heat, scraped through by a sh in one of them, trapped a length faster than normal in the final, made the bend in second and ran on.  The "bet all week", Sallys Cobbler in red, came off the rails into the back straight and Khan said thank you very much as he went by!

good luck with pup bairn, i just got back into game too, after a good while out, our girl a bit younger than you're lady, i'm hopeful she will win races, no matter grade, she is getting well reared, but never confident, it's great to see lads back in game

thanks MALAY, greyhound racing was brilliant years ago when I first got interested,the competition just between the owners to be the guy with the best dog at the  local track was palpable, you could feel the pressure but now the tracks seem soulless, the banter is not there, our local track is now Newcastle, 200 miles away the trainer even further, used to love getting a new dog over from Ireland for the flapping but the excitement is not as intense and you can't even get your bets on without problems, anyway hope you too have a decent dog to go to war with and it more than matches your dreams and expectations.cheers.

Sad times for the sport indeed Bairn, I'm lucky i have 2 tracks close to me, anyway good luck with pup and hopefully you can get a few trips down to Newcastle and make a day of it, get some enjoyment.

Still love watching fast dogs run, and show track craft, like 2 last night, Droopys Ambush and Super Nova, not been to a track for good while, we used to go Crayford but changing that upstairs bar to owners only stop that, too many undesirables in downstairs area, great feeling watching your own dog, Get On Blackie was last one I owned, he was fast but had to have T1, almost unbeatable Reading, us old uns have had the best of it, too many to mention but Scurlouge, Hawk, Desert Pilot and Some Picture, made the hair on your neck stand up, and obviously Bob

well remembered fattie. we've had a few nearly dogs, Slangevar Tommy, Freedom Apollo and Moanteen Shadow all had poor early, to have a top class dog you need that half yard just to make the bend and then you take it from there. cheers.

sorry for not getting back to you quicker but my wife has been in hospital for the last 3 weeks, she is very poorly with pnuemonia, I have been visiting the hospital 3 times a day and stayed over last night, even although I am delighted with the pup this has tempered my excitement, anyhow if the pup traps better their is improvement there, she was very brave at the first bend, I thought she was going to win by a couple of lengths but she seemed to lose her action just after the last bend, I would have bet against her in the photo, and she may have picked up an injury but wont know until tomorrow as the trainer is at Towcester tonight.cheers.

Yes I echo L H.'s sentiments. The good health of your nearest and dearest is all that really matters, anything else in life is a bonus. As we all get older that is even more relevant. I wish your wife a speedy recovery and hope she's home safe and sound very soon.
