the post carries the lighting gantry which illuminates the actual line just behind......the post has the finish sign which was intended for those visiting rather than watching on TV and was a guide for those on the terraces with official results declared from the photo and laser line prints.....it is also able to spin round should the track require maintenance which requires an excavator.....i understand the gripes now the majority of betting is on video media but honestly it does not bother me one bit.......

Fair points Winja, but it cannot be that hard to move a strip of tape 1m back to underneath where the ray print is taken from? Why would they not want the line on the track actually where the finish line is? If this was horse racing it would be laughed out of town..

the line is where the print is taken from?....

I don't understand all these problems about where the line should be. Never remember any such problems in the past but have I been missing something?
|
|
By:
thats because you were there sparrow......the problem is the conflicting angles the television pictures show.......
|
|
By:
the strip of tape on the track is approx 1m further on from where the ray print machine is in the gap on the rails, why can they not move that tape directly underneath the ray print machine?

I suppose you're right winja but it all seems very strange to me especially the results we have witnessed at Henlow these past 4 or 5 years. When Jim Cremin told me in an email that the camera at Henlow was not right on the line I was amazed.

the strip of tape is in front of the machine but behind the visual post so people know the post is a guide......its also all to do with wide angle lenses to capture a photograph that shows the field from both sides and is elevated enough to capture the correct spread so the camera lens has to be positioned behind the line with the electronic line representing the position of the tape......

Well I have to admit this is all beyond me but one thing for sure is that we now have a problem that we once never seemed to have. Make what you will of that as I certainly can't.

I dont think we do with existing tracks sparrow as we just have to accept the privilege of playing bags cards with live video from the kitchen table comes with a few anomalies.....harder to forgive tracks like romford who redesigned for the television age.......

Well as for Romford I watched a race from there this morning and wondered if the cameraman was filmong from halfway up the street! Whatever happened to the basics I keep thinking and you know my track in the 60s Clapton were the very first to video their races.
