“Never back a dog first time out”
Seamus was given the advice from his old mentor Gay McKenna following an incident when the great man lumped on Catsrock Daisy on her debut.
Gay did his money, only to see Daisy become a superstar winning both the Irish Derby and Easter Cup.
Sadly, the lesson was lost on his protégé who fancied Farloe Style ‘for his life’ when the youngster made his debut in a puppy open on Derby Final night 2002.
Seamus said: “I had a grand on him before the meeting and another grand with Tony Morris on the night. He missed his break and came through the field to finish second. He then won his next five in a row.”
I will tell you a Story about Farloe Style A very fast dog Seamus had ,the dog had done Flying times at sittingbourne Won a few in A row as Puppy
December 02 he disapeared off the card after a rough Race , Derby market he appeared on the List in January I started betting him at mad odds 2 quid here a fiver there ,to win the derby ..He returned doing a Decent trial at don then got beat 3 times odds on ,was desperate in one of them ,I kept betting him ..
By this stage Im looking at about 12 bags ,I had also bet Man of cash to win 5 bags .....At a Graded Meeting in may I see Seamus at the bar
Drinking a Pint ,I went up to him I said I have bet your dog to win the derby ,He said what dog , I said Farloe Style , In his Broad Accent He exclaimed FARLOE STYLE !!! that'll never win A derby .. I said you never know Seamus ....
Anyway Farloe goes thru 1st 3 rounds qualifying easy enough Winning his race before the 1/4 final .1/4 final night Man of cash storms home in the first qtr He is now Jolly to win the whole thing ,Then comes Farloes race He comes away and is Level at the 2nd bend ,Im a Sure he will qualify expecting a Burst down the back straight , The race bunches and somehow he ends up 4th , I was foooking gutted
I walked back into the Grandstand Seamus seen me I shook my head and he Just dropped his head and looked into his Pint
Man of cash drew 1 in the Final , I swear if I could have swapped for farloe I would have jumped at it ....Cash Missed and that was that
I had bet Farloe in another race Final Night ,He hacked up in a lot faster time than the final
2 Runs later he was nodded by droopys shearer in the select Stakes I had bet him at 20s and had shearer and top saving to beat him
Foook knows what happened in the Qtrs , But thats greyhound racing
Next time I spoke to seamus ,He said well he Might have won it we will never Know
A real Character and a Great trainer , Astute winning the derby was amazing all considered , I had a small bet on him at 40s on the night
