I saw the trailer for it and it looked horrific. Not sure i could watch it all even if it meant being accused of burying my head in the sand. Hopefully it will spur on the greyhound people and authorities into weeding out the bad eggs that are giving everybody a bad name.
Report sparrow June 27, 2019 8:24 AM BST
What was this please?
Report Deepdale Dreamer June 27, 2019 9:57 AM BST
There was an expose on the culling of greyhounds last night on RTE investigates in Ireland. Think the programme was called Prime Time and and the lead investigator is called Conor Ryan. Haven't watched the programme, only the trailer. Think it exposes illegal coursing, abbatoirs that are prepared to cull greyhounds, export to the Far East, overbreeding. Obviously all one sided, but there's covert filming I believe which appears to back up their claims. irishone will be able to correct if there's any errors in that summary. Someone has said you can watch it on RTE catch up.
Report sparrow June 27, 2019 10:53 AM BST
Well it's good that they are prepared to show this and not try to cover it up. These sort of people have been doing this for years and it's a crying shame but thank you for explaining it Deepdale and hopefully I will get to see it.
Report olddesperado June 27, 2019 11:01 AM BST
I watched it and was sickened tbh,

As bad as the excessive culling is some of the other alternatives are worse.

Cutting off the ears of live dogs and abandoning them to starve/die

Exporting to far East where many are boiled alive, covert footage showed this practice in operation,  the roars of the dogs was heart breaking.

Dogs turning up at vets so pumped with epo their blood was like jel.

It's a horrible industry below the surface.
Report p_r_e_m_i_e_r__f_a_n_t_a_s_y June 27, 2019 11:21 AM BST
Hold on let's get some things straight, that vet that was going on about the dogs being so pumped full of EPO their blood is like treacle is seemingly in a relationship with an anti who works for RTE, Denis Breary a well respected vet has pretty much rubbished his claims.

As for cutting their ears off so they cannot identify the dogs from their tattoo all racing greyhounds now have to be microchipped so how long ago where them pictures from?

Some of the things on the programme where disgusting and where really hard to watch, hopefully those people get dealt with as harsh as possible by the law..... However don't be taking everything said on that biased 1 sided programme as gospel.

Ffs in the first few minutes they said a racing greyhounds career typically lasts 7 months...... Absolute nonsense
Report irishone June 27, 2019 3:39 PM BST
Well p f knowing Gerry let's say I wasn't surprised
Then the culling is true from personal experience
That's what I know Fact and it wasn't nice to see it broadcast
Sure there was a load of anti sh1te as well
but this sport is meant to be so well regulated
The ICC  is somewhat akin to the FAI it seems
Report mesi June 27, 2019 3:50 PM BST
was surprised to see the openness of the illegal coursing
Report p_r_e_m_i_e_r__f_a_n_t_a_s_y June 27, 2019 4:28 PM BST
I'm not saying what was shown on the programme did not happen, we also know the IGB have been useless for years too...

However some of the crap that's been banded about lately is laughable... Greyhounds are money making machines for owners and when they dont make any money anymore was said on Jeremy Vine on BBC last week..... Eh so who are these owners creaming from their dogs??

Yes the IGB now need to take a strong stance against those involved in wrongdoing or harming or killing healthy dogs but every political cant in this country like Paul Murphy and Ruth Coppinger now jumping on the anti bandwagon and wanting funding removed as if they only found out about it last night.

Regarding political interference, this is what happens when people turn a blind eye for so long.

Couple turned up here looking for our votes
I said " not being funny lads but it seems to me the whole political system is corrupt"
Both of them agreed with me and both got elected
So I am expecting a massive change in the next

the most horrific programme iv seen in many a year the cruelty the animals suffer in Asia is nothing short of a concentration camps why would you send a dog there to suffer like that greyhound racing needs banning in Ireland simply as.

Having read what has been posted on here I could not watch the programme Sad I am not burying my head , I know the evil that has gone on in this Sport over the years Sad Mass slaughter Etc , the whole problem is down to owners not giving a
flying about their dogs END OF , until that is addressed nothing will change , There have been owners have owned a multitude
of dogs I doubt if some have taken one dog home ,some are still banging about giving it the Biggun ,while their Ex racers are shipped off fook knows where ,there are those in the Heirachy who have only two interests in the Sport Stomach and Pocket Lining , as for the recent GBGB figures A load of old bollox imo , if it takes track closures and a decrease in Breeding so be it , I for one want no part of the recent cannon fodder  Schedule , absolutley fooking scandalous what has happened to
these kind and lovely animals over the years ,People should be absolutely ashamed of themselves, if these animals don't have a home to go , stop fooking buying them ,Stop breeding them END OF , as for these w@nkers with their derby and big race dreams who do not guarantee a dog a home , they should be made listen to the screams of these poor animals being boiled , perhaps
their dreams will turn to nightmares . If you INVEST in a greyhound INVEST in its future .. If the sport dies it dies so be it Sad
Report the old nanny ;-) June 28, 2019 11:21 PM BST
What fooking Right has anybody to leave some of these poor animals the way they end up , WHAT RIGHT ?
Report the old nanny ;-) June 28, 2019 11:24 PM BST
The old Rehomeing Club "Oh our dog went to the Rehomming center" Did he , did you ever inquired where he ended up ?
Report the old nanny ;-) June 28, 2019 11:30 PM BST
As for these Multi owners with loads of Dogs Who dont provide a Home , My advice is to go and buy a Fooking Horse its a lot easier to home one horse .

the blooming scum bags who transport the poor dogs and were identified on the progranne should be banned immediately  no holding stupid enquiries and waiting for this issue to vanish  ban the 2 transporters named and shamed from transporting any animals  very simple if there is nobody to transport these poor dogs into misery  the practice is in real trouble  just bar them from any greyhound venues

Report Deepdale Dreamer June 29, 2019 10:23 AM BST
I'm like you nanny, i can't watch it either. I'm not sure raising prize money is the answer stayinin, what needs increasing is the amount of money going into welfare and rehoming. As nanny says, if you take ownership of a dog you should ensure that it has a life to look forward to after racing. If you can't sort that out, then you shouldn't be in the game.

Firstly, to prevent anyone screenprinting this and cutting off the bottom, I will say when it's finished. That way everyone will know exactly what we've said.

Like everyone else involved in racing we were disgusted at the contents of the RTE programme last night. Whether a dog is a racing dog, a coursing dog, or the late Aunt Ginny's nasty little chihuahua, it should never end its days in the knackeries. But the thought of our beautiful, graceful greyhounds meeting their ends like that is to all decent racing people utterly unthinkable.

There are a few things though that do need questioning or highlighting.

RTE is notorious for being biased and reporting all sorts in the most slanted and dishonest way. The programme last night was a good example of that. They blagged their way into Longford saying that they were going to do a positive feature on greyhound racing. This was obviously untrue, they didn't go inside the stand and see the people that were inside, they just talked about the very few outside the stand. There were other stadia on other nights that would have shown racing in a far more positive light but that wouldn't have been useful to the programme makers.

The vet who was interviewed is the partner of the RTE news anchor, she is vociferously anti racing. A very convenient vet to use.

The poor dog that had his ears cut off was from 7 years ago. I think we all know about that act of barbarism. They couldn't find an example of that practice more recent than 7 years.

The dreadful incident of the greyhounds found in a pit was from 2007, 12 years ago. This is surely going back a little too far to be an accurate depiction of current racing practice.

Our own greyhound scandal at Seaham was of course brought up. The truth behind all that has been lost in the anti racing rhetoric. Dave Smith was found guilty of burying dogs that he had shot on his allotment. It was the burying of the dogs that was the offence, not the shooting of them. But the main thing that's been lost is the fact that most of the dogs on the allotment weren't greyhounds. Smith was disposing of dogs for the police and the local authority. Their red faces were conveniently overshadowed by the matter of racing greyhounds being there. It was a nasty practice nonetheless

not me who composed that but worth reading i think

Kavvie that one greyhound has not a sofa to go after years of racing is not Good , that thousands do not is Scandalous

If people cannot sort out a decent life after racing for the dogs they should fook off else where ,they need to be told

they are not welcome ... I was informed of a Dog who actually  died post race, actually being marked on Data as Re homed

The dog was involved in a race where 3 of the Dogs were clearly drugged .... A NO HOME NO DOGS policy needs to be put in

Place END OF .

Agree 100% nanny. These sort of people do nothing but damage to our sport and if it means less owners and dogs bred then so be it.
