Quite honestly it's difficult for me to think of any track as poor as Towcester is. Such a course as it is would never have been built to be fair. You have to laugh watching wide runners looking to pass on the inside and it gives you the impression that they are chasing an inside hare. Old Romford racegoers will know what I mean.

Agree with everything you say about White City dr.atkins apart from about the grass. I have lots of photos that my mate took of all the rounds when Laurie's Panther went unbeaten and when I'm Slippy won. The grass although mown was surprisingly rough and uneven. I will try and post a pic; it is waiting to be approved at the moment.

Best atmosphere I have ever experienced at any event, sporting or otherwise. The hairs on the back of your neck and arms bristling, losing your voice and dancing around like a kid, absolutely godamned brilliant.

even then they were letting the groundsmanship go to pot
Report wedge1 June 2, 2017 6:57 PM BST
worst thing they ever did to greyhound racing was to take the grass track away

Camira Flash owned by the Duke of Edinburgh, for a while, when it won the Final

I thought they were going to wreck the place over Camira Flash.

I remember Desert Pilot giving Pat Seamur a start and a beating in the select stakes there, took my breath away

Controversy was the order of the day after the semi final exit of Camira Flash. John Donald, a lifelong greyhound racing enthusiast who lived on the White City Estate at the time and felt as if the White City was his second home, rightly questions whether Camira Flash should have been allowed back into the Derby after his fourth place elimination, and whether it had anything to do with his association with Prince Philip. In the second semi final Camira Flash started slowly, along with Withche's Smoke and El Campo. However, the early leader Not Flashing caused crowding at the third bend and, in the opinion of the judges, had fought and caused sufficient mayhem to enable Withche's Smoke to power home on the outside by 2 lengths from El Campo, the 2/1 favourite and trap 6 runner, with Not Flashing in third. Immediately the buzz around the stands was that Not Flashing should be disqualified, but even when this decision had been made there was then a second decision as to whether it should become a 5 dog final or Camira Flash (9/4) be promoted into the final. In a less eventful first semi final the 11/10 unbeaten Shady Parachute was fast away to lead throughout and win by 5 lengths in an impressive 28.62.
