What Memories ..Such great days for the Game ..What a Great Track & Era .. Heartbreak.

different era....no vids....full of punters.....plenty of books........now looking back I would want to be a bookmaker but in my early days which were the 80's I wanted to be a punter.....another massive tote board....imagine those scenes in colour......

At Clapton we were the first track to get the videos in the late 60s.

how were they watched sparrow.....super 8?.......didn't think videos were around until the late 70's

You could only watch them at the track.  They would show the previous meeting about half an hour before racing began.

Probably wrong to describe them as videos but replays just the same.

I bet there's a collection of those films somewhere.....in a garage or loft......if they survived....converted to digital would make a fascinating watch...

I would love to see them again, so perhaps I should look out for them on ebay.

The prices have increased quite a bit lately on ebay. They're bidding around £18 for an ordinary graded card at Clapton 1969!

the replays were on a black and white portable tv.
happy days.
i would stand outside and ask complete strangers to posed as my dad
i then  go and knock on the black door at the cheap ring.
a man would open it and i would say that i am with my dad.
i had a different dad every meeting

The betting ring at Clapton was really strong fortunes changed hands ..It was great when it was wet there, as there was a tremendous bias and the outside runners really dominated, when the Scurry was held at Clapton it was a real top class competition, all the classy dogs ran in it, and all the Clapton trainers knew the Time of day. A few of the older guys may remember Don't Gambol dominating the Scurry for a few years, a white & black dog trained at Wimbledon ran out of Tr 6 fast starting wide runner. Flying Machine.

i was bought up in luton where we had a dog track with 10 tote boxes 2bob and one ten bob window, as well as 7 to8 bookies, you had kennels for your dogs and they had a vet like they have today, a lot of people like sid the fish and nick savver started their training live's, when i could get a lift to henlow they did'nt have a tote box just a fellow with the odds on a blackboard and only 4 bookie's, those days are gone and we look through rose tinted glasses and don't say how life was so hard.
