My information is that the decision has already been made and it's Hall Green.

Do Hall Green know what an open race is?

That will be handier Miss Wales, M1/M6 traffic jam far closer than the M25 gridlock

Absolutely true Irish, geographically it's much fairer than Saaf London.

Furthermore it's not a $hithole like Wimbledon and excepting the second bend, which needs some getting used to for wide runners, it's now a much better shaped track.

The big big big big issue is that it's still under the control of Clive Feltham, who is greyhound racing's number one enemy. No one in power has the balls to bring him to task and until they do the sport will always be on the back foot.

Off subject but I noticed the other day that Sittingbourne now have handicap racing. How long has this been going on?
The first in the South since Crayford had them over the 540 trip.
Report Stow_judge September 15, 2015 10:21 AM BST
Doncaster is the next best running track in the country. I'm surprised W'don is sl@gged off so much. While the facilities leave a lot to be desired, the track size, configuration and  length of run to the 1st bend are superb! I'll happily put up with poor facilities while the actual running track is so good. There are very, very few properly designed Greyhound tracks left in this country.
Report miss.wales September 15, 2015 11:51 AM BST
Stow

The run to the bend and the long straights are good - the track seems narrower now than was previously the case (that may be an illusion because of where we are forced to watch from) but the main problem is the bends, particularly the old first bend, which is simply too sharp for 6 dogs to get round safely, even in pairs!

It goes without saying that had Paschal got his way, which now looks a forlorn hope, the whole track would have been re-shaped.
Report Stow_judge September 15, 2015 1:22 PM BST
The racing at the last 2 Derby's appeared pretty clean to me.

While I have not been to some of these tracks

Wimbledon & Doncaster Much the best running tracks in the country
Romford/Crayford/Harlow/Sunderland/Pelaw/Pboro/Poole etc too sharp, not proper racing
Hove/Notts tracks too big. Standard distance too far after years of breeding for speed. Shorter 4 bend trip = too short a run to the bend
Newcastle Ridiculous camera angle prevents me from forming an opinion of the track
Monmomre - Watched plenty of races from there and don't like the gaff too much. Can't put my finger on why
Sittingbourne - looks ok on video, but the track looks a bit big for a significant number of Greyhounds
Hall Green The lighting looks very poor on video. Not been there
Swindon Poor track configuration. 480m trip start far too close to the bend
Towcester Run too short to the corner. Apparent significant rails bias
Henlow 5 bends and a bit sharp.
Yarmouth - been a couple of times, the track does not seem well configured.

As you can see, I don't enjoy the Greyhound racing anywhere near as much as I once did! I only really enjoy the racing from Wimbledon & Doncaster.
I still go to Romford ca. twice per month. The social side of it is still fun.
Report wondersobright September 15, 2015 1:27 PM BST
if they really wanted to they could create a new 480 trip at hove which is at or just in front the 515 traps but bring the winning line closer to the traps...would be excellent imo

I don't really know what that means.

Surely you wouldn't say it was worse in any aspect than say Kinsley, Sun'land or Peterborough for example?
Report wondersobright September 15, 2015 4:05 PM BST
the surface at sunderland is pretty good nowadays
the ground during the festival was dire but has been excellent either side during the summer...so what does that tell you about the owners Plain
as for the bends the graded racing is generally clean otherwise I wouldn't be playing at the track
and open race dogs that don't have a trial (or preferably 2) what's that saying about fail to prepare...
Report miss.wales September 16, 2015 9:15 AM BST
wonders

What about the third bend?

It is simply impossible for the dog on the inside to get round without checking if there's another dog anywhere from 2 yards ahead to level with it.

It's like the Bermuda Triangle - the inside runner disappears off the screen.
Report wondersobright September 16, 2015 11:17 AM BST
yes its tricky on the inside, notts 3rd bend is tricky too, wimbledon, peterborough...quite a few other tracks imo

puts a premium on bend running at sunderland defo but impossible?? cant have that

if you want to watch a masterclass have a look through some of the vids of a dog called olympic money...top grade snail and rail who is 1 of my fav dogs at the track right now

you will see in a lot of his races he normally comes with his run into the 3rd bend and is goldilocks round the bend (not too fast but not jamming brakes on either...perfect for sun)

easy to blame the track imo but I prefer to be more critical of dogs who regularly make mistakes as the ones who don't are where the rewards are Love
Report mint September 16, 2015 4:03 PM BST
If you suggest using Doncaster for the Derby they will have to put an inside rail in front of the 480 traps  to stop dogs running through the gap at the start.

I don't blame you for taking financial advantage of the idiosyncratic nature of a track like Sunderland but when dogs which can safely overcome that kink are the exception rather than the rule, it sort of makes my point that the track is not really fit for purpose.

not fit for purpose is harsh miss wales, no track is perfect

I could have listed plenty of railers that run sunderland really well but didn't for obvious reasons...

Younger generations are simply not interested in the sport.

I don't necessarily agree with that. Go to Shelbourne on a Saturday night or Harolds Cross on a Friday night and it is packed full of younger people enjoying the night before heading off into town.

However the older (yes ye won't like this) whining racegoer does not want them there and brands them as six packers etc........, I was brought up racing when younger but then during my latter teenage years stopped going (went horse racing more) and only got really back into it as going to the dogs as a "six packer" out to enjoy a night with my mates. Since I have been racing pretty much every week (usually multiple times weekly) for 14 years.

These so called "six packers" should be embraced, made feel welcome, make them enjoy their night and they'll come back again and again, in time who knows they may even end up getting involved in ownership.
Report sparrow September 30, 2015 8:33 AM BST
I would think Ireland was a different case to to this country for many reasons. I don't care for six packers anymore than most but realise they might just keep the game going that bit longer. A bit like bookmakers and their BAGS tracks. Although from what I hear the betting percentages at some of the irish tracks leave a lot to be desired. I have been to Shelbourne but it would be about 15 years ago.
Report p_r_e_m_i_e_r__f_a_n_t_a_s_y September 30, 2015 8:36 AM BST
Romford on Friday nights seem to get a good crowd of mostly younger people

What has betting percentages go to do with it, I have never ever heard anybody say to me I am not going for a night out at the dogs as they're betting to 180%
Report p_r_e_m_i_e_r__f_a_n_t_a_s_y September 30, 2015 8:37 AM BST
And betting is totally different over here to over there so bringing up percentages is pointless, it's a different world
Report sparrow September 30, 2015 8:41 AM BST
I just thought the percentages might put some people off, but what do I know.
Report p_r_e_m_i_e_r__f_a_n_t_a_s_y September 30, 2015 8:48 AM BST
Percentages are no different on Saturday nights (for instance) to anywhere else really, it's on Wednesday / Thursday nights when you have young dogs chucked in graded races, unraced stakes etc...... where you get really high percentages but then you have dogs improving 100 spots ++ from what's on their card so who can blame them, they still could have a 1/10 shot priced up at evens as they're on a hiding to nothing

Report Winja September 30, 2015 11:20 PM BST
don't worry about percentages its value you need.......at Crayford on a Friday night you would think there was a chalk shortage......value will only come with betting volume.....betting volume will only come with players....players only come when they are involved.......owning greyhounds gets them involved........new owners benefit trainers.....energised trainers try a bit harder....they tell their owners......the owners tell their pals.....everyone wants a bet......the ring gets busy....more chalk is used by those dirty rotters on the stool......I can get a bet because everyone knows trainers are clueless when it comes to tipping.....and the merry go round continues.....I think I've cracked the problem lads....anyone got rickies number..
