Remember a dog called "Carhumore Ranger" which ran at Wembley, (trained by Sid Ryall), weighed in at 96lbs.  Only just fitted into the traps!
Anyone seen larger?

Thats a whippet. Knockemstiff (spectre -conigar goddess) a Rochester regular ran at  over 100lbs a couple of times although his best weight was about 98lbs.His trainer George Ripley deliberately got him to over 100 lbs to get in the Guinness Book Of Records. I think his heaviest was about 102lbs. The dog was a bang railer who ran his best when it was raining and slow.Kevin Barry ,the rm always gave the dog trap 1,and i can remember one night in the bar after racing an idiot owner moaning about how come Knockemstiff  always gets 1 .The dog would have mashed anything drawn inside him through the inside fence.

Ps the dog was fairly tall and wide but unbelievably long.

If a 1971 whelp, then it was a litter brother to Leading Pride who was a really good marathon bitch trained by George Curtis at Brighton.

Carhumore Ranger was a bottom grade runner.  It didn't matter what trap he drew as he usually went up last.

He was a 1974 (from memory ).Interesting you mention Leading Pride, she was owned by George Ripley,Knockemstiffs trainer.

2006-2008 Joe the Giant ran nearly 90 races, most mid-lowish grade at Hove, 48KG, 108 LB's

Bumped into joe the giant a few times after he retired, but he was 38 kilos when he ran not 48 kilos.

Quite right, Swayne.  I found Joe the Giant on the GBGB database last night and they list 89 of his races, as you say mostly low grade but a couple of 6 bend opens at Portsmouth, Sittingbourne and, of course, Brighton & Hove.  The citation attached to his pedigree reads as follows:

"Now retired and lives in Lancing, West Sussex. Winner of Racing and coursing greyhound CRUFTS 2010.  Breeders Festival 2009 Retired Greyhound of the year."

Seems a hard working, genuine dog, in other words, the backbone of the sport.

On The GBGB database they had him as 106lbs.  Maybe that's his weight since he retired?  Unfotunately, it doesn't state his weight on his racing record.

Seem to remember a Hove dog of the mid 90s named The Womble being a monster who was well north of 40 kilos if memory serves

Mad Ghost,Always enjoy your threads and I bow to your superior knowledge and memory but I think there may have been another Spectre Conigar Goddess litter that contained a big brindle dog George Ripley owned called Mallory Iremember the dog over something not to do with this thread. It would have been very early seventies. Many years before this Iused to take a fast bitch of mine to race up the 200 yard straight on the side of the Thames, the Kent Marshes. There was big ditches either side Isaw a north sea cod in there the one time. There was some giant dogs used to go up that straight biggest Iever see.
