Not allowed to back a straight winner in the shops so thought i would compile a list of the best dogs to be second at each track. All time favourite was Corleckys Pride at Southend in the 80's and obviously Dads Billy at Sheffield. Current favourite is Salacres Tango at Notts............any others fit the criteria?

Hot Jewels was the all time great imo made everyone bundles when the economy was booming and you could actually bet
 fc doubles both to be second to the field with Rycot Honcho over at Monmore usually on the same afternoonloads of real cracking p1gs at Swindon currently  rather let people do the work finding out tho tbh |

go racing remember Corleckys well.Ran against him a few times and actually caught him out in a finish once.He was busy loitering on the runin with a rival when my bitch whizzed past the pair of them.He put on the turbo as soon as he saw my girl but it all happened so close to the line that we held on by a shd.

Cant remember the name of the dog but years back at don was dog as mad as hatter ,would run on like train hit front and stop,
in this particular race was dog certain to lead ,in my calculation I thought just till before Line ,hence the nutter hopefully challenging .Anyway I have informed a few people of my thoughts and bet the dog ,as they were coming into the 3rd bend Ive started roaring the Ei! Eis ! They hit the Line His nose appeared on the outside right on the line  people were pissing themselfs larfing ,I had the bet with Siddy Hooper When I went to collect ,He said HTF? have you got that home. I said its all a matter of Timing Sid ,he might be mental ,but he dont know where the ****g Line is |

Those days on the cheapside were great nanny. Hooper, Tony Kemp, man with pipe and beard (Dave Richardson's pitch) and of course Wally Harrison who I bet with most of the time. No joking we must have stood next to each other on the terraces many hundreds of times over the years. |

Beard was a lovely bloke, I remember your story about him losing the plot, I wish I'd been there that night to see it but was probably at Catford or on the other side so missed it. Wally was a class act and my favourite on that side, I always liked him. He always gave me back prices and was just generally a very decent man to deal with unlike say John White who I just couldn't bring myself to punt with no matter what the prices were.

Northgate Sandy still with us and doing well on my pals sofa.Sadly Mickley passed away a couple of weeks ago the fun we had with him used to knock him out to nice prices knowing the old rogue wouldnt go by.My favourite dodgepot is still running at Sheffield leave you to work out who she is. Its been a pleasure to own all 3 of them

Corleckys Pride was great fun to watch and sometimes back as he won he's share of races although it was always a matter of luck in timing. It didn't matter whether he was racing in low grade over 4 bends or opens over six he was always fast enough to compete. Great memories and reminds me of yet another track with great potential that was lost due to all of us who loved dog racing just sitting back and watching it all disintegrate before our eyes. When TV's were first allowed in the shops there was a great opportunity to market actually going to the Dogs to an audience who had never seen it live, that should have been part of the contract with BAGS, bookies could have taken part in promotions (back a winner and win free admission to your local track, etc?) - now I fear it may all be too late to win over new generations of Doggie people.

I know this is about current runners but I hope you won't mind if I mention two old timers from my days at White City. They both waited but in different ways, the result one hardly won any races as he virtually wouldn't go by, the other waited in front and as soon as a dog came to him he would accelerate and win by a length.

loved that dogremember it lashing snow one night at Shelbourne and he was running in the last over 575y, some people where saying ya can't bet now due to conditions, i was like screw that, you just know this lunatic will love these conditions |

When I was a teenager (not so long ago
 ), a couple A1/S1 and minor open race dogs Wonderful Dandy and Mr Muscle often went hammer and tongs. Neck and neck, one fractionally having the edge, then the other all the way round from start to finish. Always a photo and on the nod. Both very fast and did nothing wrong, just liked company |

7.46 crayford in a while, t4 Stanton Ovation and they punting it, got all round speed for grade but only trying to be 2nd if can help it
