Ran like Mind The Net in the '75 final - one race too many and found first bend trouble.
Salad Dodger ran like Tartan Khan in the same final - trapped a length better as the others trapped a length slower - race over then.

Just been talking to Derek Law at Henlow tonight - he backed Tartan Khan @ 500/1 ante post  Mischief

I remember the 1975 final well.  There were 12 of us who used to stand by the second bend at White City and we had lumped on the John Bassett trained "Sally's Cobbler" at various prices and were very happy when the closest railer probably ever seen at White City drew trap 1 in the final.  We were even more chuffed when this very strong runner trapped in front and went up a length clear of the rank outside, "Tartan Khan",  The big danger, and the best middle distance dog I have ever seen, Myrtown, (I missed seeing "Yellow Printer" by 12 months.  Many very good judges I know have him as the best they ever saw), had, as usual, missed the start.  Then, to my absolute horror, when, for the first and probably only time in his life, "Sally's Cobbler"moved off the rails at the fist corner, "Tartan Khan" nipped inside and made the rest of the running to win leaving us all in a state of disbelief.  "Tartan Khan"  went on to win The St Leger while "Sally's Cobbler" won a Flying Four at the Old Crayford Circuit over 650 metres and broke the track record in the process.  (I think one of the other runners was "Glin Bridge" but can't remember the other 2).

Earlier in the year, the Dave Kinchett trained "Tartan Khan's" owners had been asked to remove the dog from the kennel's as the White City Racing Office didn't consider the dog to be good enough to run at the track, so he was moved to Gwen Lynds at Bletchley..........Some Reject!!!!!!!!

Some great memories, madghost. Regarding Yellow Printer, you won't find many disagreeing about how good he was. Personally I would nominate Pigalle Wonder as the best 4 bend dog I have seen.

And I thought I was an old git, Sparrow.

Never saw Pigalle Wonder run but know his Track Record for 525 yards at Wembley, (28.72 seconds on grass), still stood when the stadium closd and was rated better than Yellow Printer's 525 yards at White City, (28.28 seconds, again on grass).  Printer's son Super Rory broke it in the semi-finals of the 1972 Derby with a 28.26 seconds run.  Unfortunately, he was a young, inexperienced pup and the Derby night atmosphere and noise scared the living daylights out of him and the great Patricia's Hope won the first of his 2 English Derbys to add to his Scottish and Welsh ones he had won the same year to complete the "Triple Crown".  (The last greyhound to do it).

Its bought a lot of memories back reading about these great dogs of the past.Isaw a dog called Future Cutlet win no end of opens before the war,he might have won the Derby Icant remember.A Clapton dog called Local Enterprise was a top notcher just after the war.In one year the dog won the Scurry, the Cesarewitch at West Ham,might have been the Laurels and Welsh Derby I kow he won them races the dog had pace to burn and could stay very well. Before he retired he must have been four year old he won the Gold Collar ,PALL Mall got beat a short head in that years Scurry and the White City Derby Priceless Border baet him that night.Good Dog who was in the mix with the greats was Yankee Express,Dromin Glory,Haymacker Mack and Milebush Pride were among the best I saw, talk about you dont know what you got till its gone what happened to this great sport? mad ghost,Ilove reading your recollections as you have a way of bringing the races back to life.Pigalle Wonder was owned by Al Burnett who had The Stork club in Swallow St. and The Pigalle also in the West End.He paid big money for dogs at the time and was a big punter.Ithink it was him that organized a three dog challenge at White City in the fifties, the dog that won was called Prince Of Bermuda trained by Ger McKennas uncle .He was some dog as it was his first look at the track and he was the first dog ever to break 29 round Shelbourne. The last time I went to the old Western Rd track in Cork he was still 500 yds track record holder and that must have stood for about 40 years.
noflapleft   sad isnt it.Game has gone a million miles backwards.

Thank you for your kind thoughts, Wood Lane.  Your recollections of Pigalle Wonder, along with Sparrow's, are fascinating.  No doubt, he was one of the true greats of the game.

Prince of Bermuda won the three dog match in front of 25,000 people at White City!  Must have been a great night's racing, and Local Interprize must have been some greyhound.  Sorry to say never saw any of these great dogs run, so I'll stick with Myrtown as my best 4 bend runner.
