We all recently had a little chuckle when this dog started trialling at Belle Vue after a few races at Drumbo Park.

Then word came through that even though he had been micro-chipped and registered, the owners were being told to change his name before he could be allowed to run.

Apparently one of the bookmakers had objected and the Racing Office agreed with them that the name was unsuitable and may show the track in a bad light.

The dog's name - CROOKED BOOKIE

Sensible decision or just absurd?

interesting development. So English ! . 90% (or more)  of us would just laugh at the name , not even give it a second thought ..... but the bookies and the track management have different standards to the rest of us . Or is it just that in the U K you cannot say anything or do anything that is likely to upset someone. Always thought democracy was about the majority ruling the minority..... but it seems something else is afoot over  there !

Absurd ,but it always has been .Yrs ago the old NGRC would not accept one of my dogs being called Holy Smoke cos it may offend catholics.

The one that's been there the longest - for more than the 40 years I've been punting there.

Apparently went above the Racing Office's head with his complaint.

If the GBGB allow the name, then that should be the end of it.

Typical Belle Vue Bookmakers. Haven't they got other things to worry about?

Not quite pensionable age yet but feeling more like it every day.Crazy

Yes The Chieftain was the place to be - much better view of the racing from there, and surprisingly easier to call the photos.

You could also bet with six dogs, five dogs and even 4 dogs on that side. It's only allowed on opens at Belle Vue nowadays although no one can give a reason why. It was originally considered to be damaging the tote place market , but there is very little of that now anyway.

Now we're battling 150% books, only 2 of whom will take a decent bet on a Friday, and hordes of drunken six-packers. I'm afraid that the BAGS meetings (with Betfair and betting shops available) get more attractive by the week.

Would they accept HONEST BOOKIE?

What about "Skint Bookie"
Report miss.wales July 2, 2014 9:42 AM BST
The dog is now called TOUCHE DAN EARTH

Apparently they wanted Touched A Nerve but couldn't have that either and the new name is supposed to be a representation of that.

WTF?

I wonder how they'd react today to the name a dog was given some 40 years ago.  The dog ran at Walthamstow and one night won a £300 final over 880 yards.  His racing name:  Bill The Pig
