Big two in the Memorial are Sidarian Blaze and Deanridge Pennys. Not sure why there's a difference of 7/4 and 7/2 between them, though. Plenty has been made of Blaze's recent trial. Good but not that good, imo. Think Pennys more reliable early, both about 28.50 dogs, 25/1 apiece for the Derby, so the bet had to be Pennys.

At Clonmel, Sir Paddy fastest overall, imo and may only need clear runs to collect the silverware. Think Cahernaheena Lad quickest early in the competition but may not sustain it, so tiny interest 12/1 Inslips Dino. Main rival in the quarters is Laughill Bolt. That's only 9/2 outright and Dino doesn't look that inferior, in my book.

Good luck!

Pacino looked a super prospect last week. If he had been inside Knight he would have done a serious run.

Looks plotted up on Saturday now.
Report woodmanchester January 17, 2014 10:16 AM GMT
Good luck Lads. Suppose he could be anything. Strong at the end of 525yds but considering he's yet to break 29sec, one or two others may prove too speedy for him?

Yeah BJG, like I said, could be anything. But think Blaze and Pennys showed 28.35 odd pace early in careers. Not saying Pacino wont end up matching that kind of level, though

Latest betting:

2/1 Sidarian Blaze
4/1 Deanridge Pennys
8/1 Razldazl Pacino
9/1 Jackal Frampton
12/1 Jaytee Seville
14/1 Bar

Liking the 9/1 Jackal Frampton very much indeed. Looks quickest puppy in the competition to me and could improve even further. Not too disappointed with original bet Deanridge Pennys. Eased a fraction to 4/1 but would do much better with slightly sharper exit. Besides, I've seen Blaze picked up by Borneo before today and may not be the world-beater everyone seems to imagine

There was contrasting fortunes for the big two in their third round clash in the Red Mills Open Unraced at Clonmel on Sunday.

Denis O’Malley’s Airfield Paudie (Black Shaw/ Airfield Mistake) turned in another fetching early paced performance in producing another best of the round time but Sir Paddy paid the price for his poor draw and could only finish fourth.

Airfield Paudie flashed out of the four box and led by a length at the bend from Cabra Lou with Shaneboy Frankie some three lengths back in third heading into the back straight. Sir Paddy was well back in fourth after being crowded. Cabra Lou was a persistent challenger but Airfield Paudie was always  holding her and won by a length in 28.59 with Shaneboy Frankie some three and a hal,f lengths third and then a length to the staying Sir Paddy.

The opening heat saw the Rachel Wheeler trained Move Over Hughie (Droopys Vieri/ Move Over Hayley) produce a minor upset as he led from the first bend to win in 28.86. He came away a little crooked from one and it was Carernaheena Lad that led up from Clares Wonder but Move Over Hughie improved up the inside and forced his way through to the front on the bend. He then went on to win by two lengths and the same from Cahernaheena Lad and Clares Wonder in 28.86.

Those who made Droopys Oddysey the 4-5 favourite for the third heat must have been feeling a little down in the dumps when he took a hefty first bend bump and was at least eight lengths adrift of the leading Express Max at halfway, separated by Liosgarbh Tom. But things began to change dramatically around the bottom bends and the Fraser Black trained Droopys Oddysey  (Westmead Hawk/ Silent Show) came storming through to win by a length from Liosgarbh Tom in 28.92 with the flattering Express Max a length and a half third.

In the final heat Laughil Blake was an absentee but litter brother Laughil Bolt (Brett Lee/ Laughil Lass) did it nicely for trainer Pat Guilfoyle and owners Paul and Mary Jennings. He was slowly away but got a nice run around the bend to lie third behind Green Under and Gortnahoe Rover. Laughil then asserted around the bottom and he led turning for home to win by a length and a half from Green Under in 29.38 with Gortnahoe Rover some two lengths third

I reckon Focus on Carlow is worth an e/w punt at 20/1 outright. Sure, he's in a hot semi final but his run last week was impressive.
Report woodmanchester January 25, 2014 12:19 PM GMT
Agree George, but not taken a close look yet. Think Carlow was the one fast away who moved wildly off. If so, will see what trap tonight?
Report woodmanchester January 25, 2014 2:29 PM GMT
Carlow T2, sorry to say can see his moving off again into my Deanridge Pennys. Looks like a dream run-up for Sidarian Blaze and once round the bend, should not be caught. Would be playing 9/4 antepost coz seems a sure-fire finalist but already in with Pennys and Jackal Frampton. Latter in same red hot heat and fingers crossed he reaches the decider.

Other semi much weaker Razldazl Pacino seems the one to beat, but don't think he'll be winning the final.

Fancy a couple of others on the card. Ecclestone isn't really a sprinter but was a very good class puppy and ought to have enough speed to succeed. Wouldn't mind a bit of the 3/1 RP tissue anyway.

The last race is a cracker. Would have to side with De Real McCoy. Running well enough to take the scalp of Cabra Buck, who nearly won the Derby once but likely to need time after lay-off. Atitboy inconsistent at start but pacey when getting things right. Ballymac Niall fast, won Night Of Stars but may struggle to hold his pitch. Fine race in prospect.

Good luck!

Sidarian Blaze broke quickly, drew clear back straight. Easy and fast 28.21. Desnridge Pennys no real headway on him until shortly after the line through. Pennys chances antepost for me if Blaze not as smartly away in final. Pleased Jackal Frampton got through, just another string to my bow. Carlow didn't move off, thankfully.

In other semi, Coppean Maeve utilised the draw to beat Millies Tavern in a much slower time.

Good to see Cabra Buck make a winning comeback. Obviously, not lost any zest

BRILLIANT SIDARIAN BLAZES TO VICTORY

25/01/2014
The Joe Dunne Memorial Puppy Stake is noted for its stunning performances every year and Sidarian Blaze certainly turned on the style when winning the opening semi-final in sensational fashion at Shelbourne Park on Saturday night.

The Graham Holland trained son of Kinloch Brae and Silverhill Tina was perfectly housed in trap one and he made full use of the draw as he shot out of the inside box and led up. But Focus On Carlow, for once, missed the kick and so Deanridge Pennys got a clear run up from three with Jackal Frampton disputing second place.

Jackal took over second spot on the bend and went a couple of lengths clear of Deanridge. Meanwhile, Sidarian Blaze had really opened up down the far side and he was up to eight lengths clear at the third bend. Deanridge got back into second at this juncture and ran on well but at the line the Sidarian Syndicate owned Sidarian Blaze was five lengths to the good in a brilliant time of 28.21. It was another three and a half lengths to Jackal Frampton which just held Tyrur Arthur by a neck for third.

COPPEEN TAKES SEMI FOR BRIAN

The second semi was reduced to five runners in the absence of Barnish Lane and it proved to be a wide open betting affair. It was also very wide open on the run to the bend with the field tightly grouped as Borna Native just led up from Razldazl Pacino

But the whole complexion of the race changed on the corner as the Brian Madigan trained Coppeen Maeve (Ballymac Maeve/ Coppeen Flyer) forced her way through on the inside and in the process baulked both Razldazl Pacino and Borna Native.

Now the Michael Moore owned Coppeen Maeve led into the back straight will Millies Tavern in second. The latter tried her utmost and closed all the way but Coppeen Maeve kept on gamely to win by a length from Millies Tavern in 28.71 with Jaytee Seville some two and a half lengths back in third.

FINAL TRAP DRAW

1 MILLIES TAVERN

2 DEANRIDGE PENNYS

3 COPPEEN MAEVE

4 SIDARIAN BLAZE

5 JAYTEE SEVILLE

6 JACKAL FRAMPTON (W)

TYRURS ON THE DOUBLE

It shaped like being a good night for PJ Fahy’s runners and, after a disappointing start for the Galway kennels, things really took off for the better in the second half of the card.

PJ must have been particularly pleased with the victory of Tyrur Van Persie (Tyrur Big Mike/ Tyrur Lisa) as he produced a storming run when winning an Open 525 in 28.68.

It didn’t look good early as he was tardy at traprise and was only fifth on the opening bend as Springwell Dano showed the way to Early Blue. Tyrur moved fourth as they straightened out for the back straight and a turn of pace saw him ran up the outside and shoot around the field to lead between the final bends. He then scooted up the straight to win by an increasing three and a half lengths from Early Blue with Dundrum Lemon a length and a half third.

FREDRIK’S SECOND VICTORY

It was Tyrur Fredrik (Tyrur Kenny/ Mozzletoff) which provided the first leg of the double when running out a convincing winner of the A1 seventh race for a second success in three outings.

Kinloch Lucy flew from boxes and led up but Tyrur Fredrik had improved into second at this stage and he shot to the front between bends. Showing a nice dash of pace, Fredrik increased his advantage down the far side and by the line had moved five clear in 28.86. Kinloch Lucy kept on to take second place some four and a half lengths clear of An Old Friend.

SCOLARI TURNS OVER LAZARUS

Tyrur Lazarus was a hot favourite for the opening A1 600 but a very slow start proved costly, particularly with the Ronnie McKeown trained Captain Scolari (Droopys Scolari/ Bandicoot Spice) getting away racing from the three box and he was clear into the back from Reigning Monarch with Tyrur Lazarus back in third.

Lazarus made up ground to go second on the third bend but the Rocks and Docs Syndicate owned Captain Scolari was too far ahead.  Captain Scolari ran strongly to the line where he had three and a half lengths in hand of Tyrur Lazarus in 33.03 with Reigning Monarch a length and a half third.

GARRYCASTLE SURPRISE

There was an even bigger surprise in the second race, an Open 350 where Satin Romeo and Ecclestone dominated the betting.

However it was sprinting debutant Garrycastle Pat (Black Shaw/ Temple Sue) which grabbed this race by the scruff of the neck at traprise and raced to an easy victory.

Garrycastle Pat flew out and led up from Catunda Alfie. Slow starting Satin Romeo forced his way through into second on the bend and ran on well but Andrew Weldon’s Garrycastle Pat was away and gone and ran out a length and a half winner in 18.95 with Ecclestone running on promisingly from the rear to be a length and a half third.

CILLIE’S GODSEND VICTORY

In the semi-finals of the Godsend @ Stud A2 last week Kilcarrig Cillie had been easily the fastest winner but he was opposed in the market for the final.

However owner Ann Guilfoyle was to have the last laugh as the son of Westmead Jo and Mt Leinster Kate settled the matter at traprise and never looked like being beaten for the €1,000 prize.

Kilcarrig Cillie broke fast and immediate shot for the inside, leading up from Mags Dream and Lord Wonder. Mags Dream threatened briefly off the second bend but Kilcarrig Cillie solidified matters when extending the advantage and he came home a two and a half length winner from Magis Dream in 28.82. Tyrur Scooper kept on to finish a two and a half length third.

SHEBA HOLDS ROSALEEN

PJ Fahy almost made it a rapid double in the eighth race, the Kilbarrack FC A1 but the old adage that you can give away time but not a start proved spot on once again.

Tyrur Rosaleen was moderately away on the inside as Karol Ramsbottom’s Garryglass Sheba (Hometown Boy/ Felltop Flyer) came away running in the white jacket.

There was trouble on the corner and Garryglass Sheba and Bodens Paradise were together on the second bend with Tyrur Rosaleen now in third after avoiding the trouble. Garryglass Sheba dashed clear again down the far side but Tyrur Rosaleen displayed huge pace to go second between the final bends and she finished fast but the photo showed that Garryglass Sheba had held her by a short head in 29.00 with Kiel Razzle some four and a half lengths third. This was Garryglass Sheba’s fifteenth career victory.

MYSTIC FASTEST IN ESCALADE

The semi-finals of the Vans Escalade at Stud A3 were run and fastest was Catherine Tuohy’s Whiteys Mystic (Droopys Vieri/ Whiteys Millie) which boosted trainer Declan Byrne’s strike rate at the track.

Abbylea Marta looked the likely winner when flashing out of trap three and she had a lead of almost five lengths into the back from Whiteys Mystic.

But Whiteys really upped the tempo down the far side and tracked the leader around the bottom before leading off the final corner. Stretching out impressively Whiteys opened up a two length gap over Abbylea in 28.96 with Gilmores Mill some three lengths third.

The second heat was won at traprise with the Liam Hughes owned Cuil Geisha (College Causeway/ Cuil Lady) breaking fast and shooting clear to the bend from Piercestown Sock and Slippery Hanna. The fancied Silverhill Lucy was slowly into stride and was struggling early.

Piercestown Sock challenged for the lead down the far side but could get no closer than a length and Cuil Geisha then powered away off the final bend to win by three lengths in 29.06. Slippery Hanna stayed on to take second a length in front of Piercestown Sock.

FINAL TRAP DRAW

1 PIERCESTOWN SOCK

2 SLIPPERY HANNA

3 ABBYLEA MARTA

4 CUIL GEISHA

5 GILMORES MILL (M)

6 WHITEYS MYSTIC (W)

Thanks Honcho. Either would be a nice win. I know what you mean about Blaze. Smart when flashing out but a bit rails dependant at the bend and I've seen him picked up before. Also, if you believe some of the fast going allowances, seen faster dogs than 28.50 odd. Plus, don't think there would be too much between him and Deanridge Pennys over the Derby 550yds. Certainly highly talented, though.
