I used to go after school with a few shillings with the first bet being 2/- place on this dog who always seem to be placed.
Would go with my friend and a girl who looked old enough to bet.
Remember losing all my money and my friend gave me two bob which I ended up turning into £36 ( Got A f/c up which Pain a bomb) Happy days

I went to the very last meeting, it wasn't my manor but I felt a sense of duty if you like to the sport. The locals were understandably upset and in a state of shock and some did a lap of honour.

Cheetah Racing at Harringay[edit]

In 1937, Harringay Stadium was part of a scheme by the owner of the Romford greyhound, track, Arthur Leggett, to increase attendance at his venue.

Twelve cheetahs were imported into the UK from Kenya in December 1936 by explorer Kenneth Gandar-Dower.[5] After six months' quarantine the cheetahs were given a year to acclimatise and for training at Harringay and Staines stadia. The cheetahs ran in public for the first time to a packed house at the Romford track, on Saturday, 11 December 1937. After this initial race, the cheetahs had only one further outing. Needless to say they consistently beat the greyhounds.

The reason for the failure of the enterprise is not known, though it is believed that complaints from local residents and pressure generated by other track owners had some bearing on the decision.[6] Other speculation suggests the experiment failed because the animals had no interest in racing.[5]

Stuart Captain

I remember backing it at White City

Went *** over tit that night as well when miles in front

Yes I think Harringay has been done before

Paul Gillet was a very nice man, never refused me a bet all the time I went there

Unlike obe dyre

Cranog Bet was a great bitch one of the best I ever saw

Don't think anything lead her at Harringay, she was a little black bitch come to think of it I think she won every race she had at Harringay

I used to stand on the line with all the judges.

Used to pick up a balls eye almost every meeting no problem.
