Slightly before my time so never attended but its only 5 miles from me.
Would be a huge success in leeds if along similar lines to Sheffield, with decent restaraunt and casino on site. Lend me a few quid Swayne and I will sort it ![]() |

would be a good idea to rip up the athletics track at South Leeds Stadium... must be losing the council a packet alongside the Hunslet ****hawks

Leeds dogs stadium was owned by Ladbrokes, when it closed in 1983 a planning application for houses to built on the land was turned down by the council.the land was turned into car park, and only this year a police station has been built on the land.

Friends of mine bred and trained the winner of "The Ebor" which was run over 650 metres at Leeds with a great bitch called "Paradise Peg" who broke the track record during the competition. She also won the Greenwich Cup (555 metres @ Catford), The Coronation Stakes (490 metres @ Wembley), The Gold Cup (710 metres @ Wembley), was runner-up in the Oaks (475 metres @ Harringay)and broke the Track Record over 740 metres @ Hackney Wick. She was bred & trained By Peggy and Ted Griffin in Cambridge and owned by Freddy Henman.

gd tells us that she went to Aussie, in pup to Westmead Champ, and certainly produced offspring. Clearly a top class bitch. We'd better watch out for the "Age Police" though, who may take a dim view of oldies indulging in nostalgia! lol.

LoyalHoncho: Nostalgia, ok try this. I was at walthamstow when Freddie bought her as a 4 month old pup for £300, the man who had first claim on her went skint. Her racing name came from his first dog, a fawn bitch called Paradise Breeze who he bought at Hackney sales for £200. Peg was the trainer/breeder's wife's name.
She was a tough, fast bitch who any owner would give anything to own and what a champion she turned out to be. Freddie sold her in whelp to Westmead Champ to Australia for £2,000. She had a litter brother called El Leyano who won 6 bend opens. When retired to stud after the father (Commutering) died early, they discovered the dog was......gay, not in the least bit interested. Ted was nearly crying when he told me as he had a load of top class bitches that people wanted to mate the dog but, no joy. The dam was called Rit Peg Princess or "Cindy" as she was known in the kennels. She had 4 litters, one by Ambiguous (Laurels winner) and two by Val's Parachute who Ted thought was the best looking dog he ever saw, and finally, Commutering. So an overdose of nostalgia and two fingers to the age police, they don't know what they're missing. |

There was a greyhound stadium to the south-west of Elland Road which opened on 16 July 1927. It was owned by the Greyhound Racing Association and they eventually sold it to the Totalisators and Greyhound Holdings (T.G.H) who were bought out by Ladbrokes in 1974. In 1979 the track kennels were closed followed by the track itself on March 1st 1982.[47]

There was a greyhound Stadium at Fullerton Park which was opened 16 July 1927, was owned by the GRA who transferred it to Elland Road in 1938. Speedway racing was also held there.

Brilliant stuff MadGhost - I well remember Ambiguous and Val's Parachute. How many decent dogs have been sold because their owners over did it? More than we can imagine I think. Great story - thanks!
