Sounding the bell is a term used in greyhound racing for the countdown to the start of a race and is accompanied by flag waving and where appropriate the diming of lights. English records date back to 1955 when Tony Morris a well known bookmaker and patron of the Canterbury Morris Dancing troupe decided to introduce a pageant to the previously banal methods of race starting.
Evolution
The introduction of the Morris procedures saw the starter dressed in Morris dancing regalia and required him to perform a small dance jingling the bells on the hem of his trousers (bell bottoms) while waving a flag which performed the duty of sending a message to the engineers to begin peddling on the mechanical hare contraption which needed a period of winding up to ensure a suitable speed was achieved on greyhound release.
First attempts saw initial teething problems created by the starter moving after leaving the running surface with the resultant jingling and jangling emitted from his bell bottomed trousers distracting greyhounds resulting in void races. Various adaptations were introduced including the provision of a box adjacent to the greyhound traps for the starter to stand on following his performance but on windy days the bell bottom trousers still created a problem.
If the system was going to be a success the bells had to be removed from the trousers and placed in the grandstands where more control could be applied. There was a feeling that some of the pageantry was lost with the removal of the bells from the bell bottoms (which from that point were only called trousers) but at least the flag remained which allowed the starter to perform a variety of moves and displays which continued even after the advent of the electrical hare (replacing the previous mechanism run by cycle power).
Styles
In modern times the sounding of a bell is commonly thought of as a mainly English activity although such was the popularity that many other countries have adopted and embraced the tradition. Australia continued to call it the Morris bell but America introduced its own system of sounding the horn which was performed by ladies who formed a club known as Hooters which developed into an establishment where both staff and patrons could relax after racing.
