What a great event with great prizemoney

This Friday 1st & Saturday 2nd March sees the hugely anticipated start of the Con and Annie Kirby Memorial Puppy Stake at Limerick Greyhound Stadium. With a total prize fund of €160,000, this is the richest event ever staged at an Irish Greyhound Stadium outside of Shelbourne Park & it is also the richest Puppy Stake in the world.  The event which is kindly sponsored by JP & Noreen McManus, also offers local GAA Clubs the opportunity to share in a €20,000 nominators prize fund.

Liam Kennedy Racing Manager at Limerick Greyhound Stadium commented that “There was huge interest in the stake and as usual entries came flooding in at the last minute from all over the country.  It promises to be a top-class event which will take a lot of winning.”

84 Greyhounds are running in the stake and all are vying for the coveted first prize of €80,000. The first round will comprise of 14 heats, with the 1st 3 dogs qualifying for Round 2 plus the 6 fastest 4th’s.  The first 7 heats will run on Friday night with the remainder running on Saturday night.

The Trap draw took place on Tuesday at the stadium and sees some very interesting heats taking place this weekend. According to Tim Murphy, bookmaker from Con Murphy Bookmakers, ‘those that have shown a lot of promise and will be well fancied include Senior Cup, Slippery Robert, Oran Maestro, Roxholme Bully, Ashford Castle and Farloe Buddy due to their good credentials. However, in a stake such as this, there is an awful lot of hidden talent, with unexposed greyhounds coming through.’

Each Greyhound running in the stake is also linked to a GAA club from County Limerick.  The overall winning nominator club will receive €10,000 and the fantastic opportunity to hold a fundraising night for their club at Limerick Greyhound Stadium at no cost. The nominator club in second and third position will win €5,000 and €2,000 respectively with the three unplaced nominators winning €1,000 each

It was the 4 dog wasn't it? If so i thought he ran well, got a lovely run up as 3 moved in on 2 and 1 and just about led and never looked like getting caught. It was probably a weak enough heat but the clock was good.

MAYHEM ON THE BENDS IN THE KIRBY SEMIS

24/03/2013
Two first bend melees ruined the semi-finals of the Con & Annie Kirby Memorial Puppy Stake as true spectacles on Saturday night at Limerick.

However, Kisses For Cloda and Roxholme Bully emerged as two hugely deserving winners and they are now in the driving seat for next Saturday’s €80,000 to the winner final.

In the opening semi Ashford Castle went off a 6-4 favourite ahead of 2-1 chance Scolari Express. From traps though it was the Dan and Clodagh Butler owned Kisses For Cloda (Ace Hi Rumble/ Droopys Kee) which showed in front and he swept the bend by about a length.

In behind the chasing pack crowded on the corner with Melodys Gamble pushing Ashford Castle wide and he collided with the outside runners. The result was that Ashford Castle and Scolari Express crashed to the ground while Stone Park King was also in the wars.

Kisses For Cloda had a three length advantage entering the back straight from Droopys Banner with Melodys Gamble well back in third and they had the final places to themselves.

Kisses For Cloda kept up a very strong gallop to score his third victory in the competition and crossed the line with five lengths to spare over Droopys Banner in 28.45 with Melodys Royal a similar distance third.

BULLY IN COMMAND

The second heat was very similar in that we again had a real dust up on the opening bend. From traps it was Leamaneigh Turbo in front but Roxholme Bully (Shaneboy Lee/ Roxholme Sue) showed the superior early pace to quickly hit the front and he had a tight length in hand on the bend.

As Roxholme Bully swept the bend the improving Oran Maestro found himself tight for room and he checked wide where he bumped Leamaneigh Turbo. The latter crashed into Slippery Robert and the latter collided with Plus Five. The result was that the latter pair crashed to the ground.

Into the back Roxholme Bully was in command with a good lead over Royal Diva and with Oran Maestro in third. The Owen McKenna trained Roxholme Bully was never going to be beaten from here and he held off the big finishing bitch Royal Diva by two lengths in 28.37 with Oran Maestro some three lengths third.

FINAL TRAP DRAW

1 ROXHOLME BULLY

2 MELODYS GAMBLE

3 KISSES FOR CLODA

4 ORAN MAESTRO

5 DROOPYS BANNER

6 ROYAL DIVA
