After watching the excellent Sky coverage from Romford on Wednesday, should the 750 and 925 metre track records stand?
The track was ridiculously fast and the the times recorded by Avit On Bertha (750m) and Aero Rebel (925m) were off the scale.
This is even more highlighted by the fact the runner-ups, Carden Twilight (750m - beaten 4 1/2 lengths), was within a length of the 11 year old 750m track record and Bridge Diva (925m - beaten 4 1/4 lengths), broke a 31 year old record by two lengths and neither even won their respective races.
When the track is or gets as ridiculously fast as it got on Wednesday, then common sense must prevail and worthy clocks should not be removed from greyhound racing annals.
I think in athletics you cant do world record if the following wind is above a certain level All you need to do is set similar boundaries in greyhound racing, e.g. cant break a track record unless going is assessed as beimg within the range +20 to -20 .

the trouble with that is,the record books would be in the hands of a racing office, have you seen some of the decisions they make?!
I wouldnt trust a lot of them to be able to count to two when sugaring my tea.

irish the minute i witness a marathon dog busting a mo sign with his front two legs in the home straight or a two bend sprinter shaping a bolt of lightning akin to usain after winning a race i will allow you to start amalgamating regulations from different sports..............until then........stick to the father christmas impressions

So +70 the other night, as awarded by the stewards (who cant count to two when sugaring tea)is totally ficticious then ? So how can it be a track record ?

The point is irish, going allowances are objectionable, the racing offices +70 will be an owners +50 and a punters +90...none of which can be deemed to be absolutely correct, the only thing thats absolutely correct is the actual time.

irish when the clock went below 23.00 for the crayford 380 track record i was there.......it was lowered in an A1...........i was asking for evens in the ring that it would happen believing blacknomilk (6/4)was quick enough on a track that was flying late on in the card.....no takers.....TicTac Tyson won the race at 5/1 and broke the clock at 22.97.....the official going was +20 however the dog had 20 more races after that record run and never got within 50 spots of it........in fact the dog was contesting A2's and A3's along with small opens before breaking down lame and retiring..................did he deserve the clock......too bloody right he did.....on the night he stepped up and performed and that is recognised in the books and until another animal steps up in similar conditions he is remembered inside the front page of the card in bold print......

but then it doesnt mean anything does it ? what does a track record mean ?
what you are really saying is "Given certain conditions this dog was the fastest ever round the track"
unfortunately 99 times out of a hundred the conditions are not going to be repeated , for an atttempt by a rival dog say ?

wrong on the first question correct on the rest of your understanding.....sticking with crayford do you think you will see the 44.57 for the 714 trip repeated readily or the unbeliveably quick 33.13 for the 540.......quality greyhounds just dip under the 34.00 dead....they would need to find another second to worry the record set by sunshine sophie in 2004......records are what they are........moments in time.....but they do mean something........they are the benchmark for all who follow......standing out in validiction of the achievement......

this is interesting thread...there are some who dont trust the racing offices and rightly so (partic bags) [& lets face it the Uk tracks dont have the clock on display in the centre of the track like Ireland for a reason]so gauging anything using a going allowance +/- is suspect, so there are those that say the time is the absolute time and it was definitely achieved i.e the clock..which I can understand but when you have the likes of SPK/Notts and now Romford going lightning times, then basically it's not like for like. aveitonbertha Seamus Cahill said on SKY she was out of her depth, she went off 20/1 and did the clock...it just devalues the clocks of good proper dogs that did proper times. & Notts (clock every week?)playing around with the track, adjusting normal by 50 and then (new calibration) +20's the following week...and Notts/SPK/Romford fast times in the middle of icy winter....there is no meaningful calibration, so you cant compare imo. If Droopys Reason would have gone a length faster and beat Eden Star's monster record it just would have all been as real as watching cartoon racing in the shops, imo

we're in danger of Flo-Jo Griffith Joyner clock by an average animal that will then be the gauge that subsequently brilliant dogs cant hit or get near. That aint good

come on irish......you only want slow clocks so you boys over the water will be able to continue to sell us silly sods in the uk pups who were 5 lengths off the track record in their trials that then go on to become.........A4 graders......

Good points winja, especially the 'moments in time'. Seem some ludicroulsy fast dogs at Rommers and wouldnt have ever put Sandwichsunshine in the top10, but was there and the clock doth not lie (or does it?).
Got to say that the other night was completely bizarre and a mess up of form. Who is actually going to take most of it at face value?

I think many will discount if have any sense. It's a bit like looking at dogs GD fastest ratings on greyhound data, if it's Notts of late, just ignore. nonsense
